KAMS issues advisory as schools reopen amid Covid-19 cases rise
BENGALURU: As schools are set to reopen, the Karnataka Association of Management Schools (KAMS) issued an advisory on Sunday, urging all educational institutions to remain alert in light of the new Covid variants and seasonal viral infections.
The advisory emphasises a strict health-based attendance policy, stating that students displaying symptoms such as fever, cough, cold, or skin rashes should not be sent to school. Parents are advised to seek immediate medical care for unwell children.
'There is no need for panic. Children who are healthy and symptom-free can safely attend school,' said Shashi Kumar D, General Secretary of KAMS.
School heads and teachers are encouraged to promote hygiene by maintaining clean classrooms, ensuring regular handwashing, and improving ventilation.
If any student falls ill during school hours, schools are directed to isolate the child safely, provide basic first aid, and inform the parents immediately.
Reinforcing that healthy children can safely attend school, KAMS called for cooperation to ensure safe and reassuring learning environments for all.

Gujarat adds 223 new cases, tally at 1,227; death in Rajkot
Ahmedabad: Gujarat, in the 24 hours ending at 5pm on Tuesday, added 223 Covid cases, taking the total active cases to 1,227. Out of the total, 23 are hospitalised while the remaining 1,204 are receiving OPD treatment. In Rajkot, a 55-year-old man succumbed to a Covid infection, taking the death toll in this wave in the state to five. According to officials, the man died at Civil Hospital after being treated for a day. He was shifted from a private hospital and had co-morbidities. In Ahmedabad, 175 new cases were recorded with the discharge of 60 patients, taking the active cases to 761. Out of the total, 78% of the cases are in western city areas alone, as indicated by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) data. Gujarat retained its second spot in active Covid cases among Indian states, with only Kerala (2,053) having higher active cases. Across India, there were 783 new cases, taking the active cases tally to 6,815. Three deaths were also recorded from the patients identified as Covid positive. Some of the health conditions included respiratory acidosis, aspirational pneumonia, ARTS, hypertension, heart failure, and diabetes.

Two more Covid deaths in 24 hours in Karnataka, year's toll rises to 11
Bengaluru: A 51-year-old woman in Belagavi and 79-year-old man in Dakshina Kannada died after being detected with Covid-19. This brings the total death tally this year to 11. The two had comorbidities and were hospitalised for at least a month. The woman, who had hypertension, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease (CKD), among other comorbidities, was admitted to a govt hospital on April 6. She died from acute cardiorespiratory arrest secondary to CKD with left ventricular hypokinesia (reduced contraction of heart muscle). The man, who was hypertensive and had dyslipidemia, seizure disorder, and osteoporosis, among other conditions, was admitted to a private hospital on May 6. He died from Covid pneumonia. As per the statistics from the health department, the state had far fewer positive cases on Tuesday — 67 — and two deaths. This was down from 265 that were reported on Monday. This brings the total active patients to 459, down from 559 the previous day. The positivity rate is down to about 11.7% from 40.7%.

Death of 74-year-old takes Covid toll to 3
Kolkata: The city reported another Covid-related death on Tuesday. A 74-year-old man with multiple comorbidities died at Woodlands Hospital, a day after he tested positive for the virus. According to sources, the Andul resident was admitted to a Howrah hospital about two weeks ago with complaints of UTI and inflammation in the urinary bladder. After undergoing treatment at the hospital, he was discharged and was at home for about 10 days. On Monday evening, the deceased's family rushed him to the Alipore hospital with complaints of acute respiratory problems, and he was already on high-flow nasal cannula at the time of admission. Doctors found that the senior citizen had pneumonia. His swab sample tested positive for Covid-19. He died on Tuesday. Sources in the hospital said that he was also suffering from hypertension and Parkinson's Disease. At present, the hospital has two more Covid patients — both senior citizens. Two Covid patients are currently admitted at the Alipore hospital — an 85-year-old man from Sarat Bose Road and a 65-year-old man from Maheshtala.
