Two years ago, he moved to Himeshima, where he opened a cafe that exclusively uses Australian beans.
With his Japanese wife, Teruko Nakamichi, they run Ozi Cafe - and all the locals and tourists have taken notice.
The island has a population of only about 1700 people. Mr Widmer, from Cronulla, is the island's only foreign resident. He says his business is boosting the local economy.
His cafe sits directly across a ferry pier. The first thing tourists see is his cafe. And it's not hard to spot. Painted in green and gold, it stands out.
"I think my cafe is the most photographed thing on the island now," he said. "It has bright Aussie sporting colours. When you look at the rest of Japan, there are many greys and browns. When the ferry pulls in, all the people pull their phones out and take pictures of the cafe. A walking tour called Walk Japan has also included the island on its tour - lots of Aussies do it."

"I rang Di Lorenzo, and they sent me eight kilos for free. People love it, and we're getting lots of online orders. Customers are driving from other areas of Japan - three hours away, to buy the beans or have a coffee at the weekend."

Mr Widmer also teaches children on the island how to swim. He previously owned a successful swimming school in Sutherland Shire. But the business went into liquidation during COVID-19, and he left Sydney at a time when travel was difficult.
It was where he learnt how to make a decent coffee. "When I had the swim school, we had a coffee shop, so I did a barista course then," he said. "I knew how to make coffee."

An estimated 1.5 million Aussies are in the dark about a potentially crippling tax-time blunder, according to new research into the habits of cryptocurrency investors Down Under. Cryptocurrency began as a niche experiment that saw early adopters scorned by traditional economists. Fast-forward to today and it's become an extremely popular cornerstone of modern portfolios, largely fuelled by recent meteoric rises, meme-fuelled bull runs and highly publicised billion-dollar NFT frenzies. An estimated six million Australians now own crypto in some form or another, but an alarming amount still don't understand that it's largely moved on from its original spot in the shadows. The taxman, as always, has caught up. According to a University of Queensland study of 745 coin holders, a full third of Australian crypto investors either don't know or aren't sure that their gains are taxable. That means roughly one in three of Australia's estimated 4.5 million crypto investors could be caught off guard when the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) comes knocking. 'Australians may not be fully aware of the potential tax consequences and may experience adverse events, which leave them financially vulnerable,' the study reads. According to the study, it's not just tech novices or first-time investors falling into the trap. Of those who admitted they were unaware that crypto profits could be taxed, nearly half (49 per cent) had tertiary level qualifications. Women made up nearly two-thirds (64.5 per cent) of those who were unsure or unaware. The research arrives on the back of a volatile few years in crypto. After the infamous 2022 crash wiped hundreds of billions from the global market, a 2024 rebound has refuelled the optimism. For Aussies, the ATO is not casting a kind eye on those who fail to appropriately declare all their gains in recent surge. 'Ignorance is no excuse, I'm afraid,' Australian crypto analyst Sydel Sierra said in a report provided to 'I, myself, copped a whopping big tax bill when I first made a profit on my crypto, so I know what it's like.' The ATO treats cryptocurrency as a personal asset, not a currency. That means capital gains tax applies when it's sold for a profit, just like regular shares or property. 'This is obvious, but you need to budget for that, you could be up for hundreds of thousands of dollars,' Sierra says. 'It might come as a shock if you didn't know the ATO would come knocking, but the plus side is, you're still up. It's not as if the taxman takes the whole lot, just a percentage.' For those earning less than the tax-free threshold of $18,200, profits can be kept in full. But if you're in the top tax bracket ($180,001 or more) you could lose 45 cents in every dollar of profit to tax. But there's still a silver lining for long-term holders. 'If you sell your crypto after holding it for more than a year, you'll be eligible for a 50% discount,' Sierra explains. 'That's the key to minimising your contributions. There's merit in buying early in the so-called crypto winter, so by the time a bull market swings around, you've seen out your 12 months and can withdraw at any time without paying full freight.' While the 'golden era' of Bitcoin-as-anarchy may be over, the illusion that crypto lives outside the reach of regulation still lingers. But Sierra says that's a dangerous misconception. 'A lot of people hear that crypto is decentralised and think that means it's unregulated, that's not entirely true,' she says. 'The taxable amount will depend on your personal income and be treated as part of it.' With regulators, banks, and tax offices worldwide tightening the screws, the age of crypto as a sovereign loophole is rapidly ending. 'My advice is do your due diligence on crypto before you invest,' Sierra says. 'And that's not just for tax purposes school yourself up on how the whole system works, and what are the potential risks. That's how you avoid them.'

With the median Australian house price of all capital cities combined now hitting a whopping $1,025,742, the dream of home ownership has become even more of a struggle - especially for mature, single women. And while the government normally focuses on the younger generation getting their foot on the property ladder, it overlooks the struggle that older Aussies face who want to buy a home, according to experts. Mortgage Expert, Debbie Hays told The Senior getting a mortgage is tough for older Australians, even when there's a large deposit and they work full-time. For many women, getting a divorce later in life can leave them with a deposit when household assets are divided - but it's rarely enough to buy a place on their own without a loan. "Banks are required to ensure that you can service and repay your loan in full during its loan term," Ms Hays said. "Which often means assessing whether it can be paid off before you reach retirement age or that you have a tangible exit strategy in place for any remaining debt at your retirement age." The mortgage expert said lenders are "cautious" of borrowers in their 50s and 60s and their application will be "heavily assessed". "Unless you can prove you'll continue working into retirement or have a clear exit strategy, like downsizing or using super to pay off the loan," she said. Bricks and More Developer and Property Flipper Jo Yates told The Senior she has noticed in recent years how many more women have been "slippping through the cracks". "I know that there's quite a lot of women having to live in cars now, which is just shocking," she said. The developer said she wants to be part of the solution of helping women find affordable accommodation, but says council regulations and red tape are stopping creative ideas. "Councils need to come to the party as well," she said, noting more land needs to be released while in many cases zoning laws were outdated and also needed changing. The developer points to tiny homes being a possible cost-effective solution, but council rules in many parts of Australia make it nearly impossible for people to live in one long-term. "On the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland, you can only have tiny homes on land if they're moveable," Ms Yates said. "And then it's only, I think, 180 days to stay on land. That's not feasible. If you've got to move it after 180 days, that's still no security." Ms Yates also sees rezoning costs as a problem in Queensland after coming up against a $180,000 bill to rezone a double block to be able to build three dwellings. "That one block of land could have accommodated three families," she said. Ms Yates is now focusing on micro apartments (small self-contained living spaces) within homes as a possible solution. "There's a movement towards rooms in houses and micro apartments," she said. "You'll take a family home and turn it into four micro apartments, and then they'll have communal areas." Another solution the developer is exploring is building affordable homes on a communal block of land. Women can buy in with their small deposits, which would be enough to own a small home or cabin - because they would not be buying the land. "I would like to create a little community on land that is strata titled," Ms Yates said. "They own the right to that property, and they can sell that on. With the median Australian house price of all capital cities combined now hitting a whopping $1,025,742, the dream of home ownership has become even more of a struggle - especially for mature, single women. And while the government normally focuses on the younger generation getting their foot on the property ladder, it overlooks the struggle that older Aussies face who want to buy a home, according to experts. Mortgage Expert, Debbie Hays told The Senior getting a mortgage is tough for older Australians, even when there's a large deposit and they work full-time. For many women, getting a divorce later in life can leave them with a deposit when household assets are divided - but it's rarely enough to buy a place on their own without a loan. "Banks are required to ensure that you can service and repay your loan in full during its loan term," Ms Hays said. "Which often means assessing whether it can be paid off before you reach retirement age or that you have a tangible exit strategy in place for any remaining debt at your retirement age." The mortgage expert said lenders are "cautious" of borrowers in their 50s and 60s and their application will be "heavily assessed". "Unless you can prove you'll continue working into retirement or have a clear exit strategy, like downsizing or using super to pay off the loan," she said. Bricks and More Developer and Property Flipper Jo Yates told The Senior she has noticed in recent years how many more women have been "slippping through the cracks". "I know that there's quite a lot of women having to live in cars now, which is just shocking," she said. The developer said she wants to be part of the solution of helping women find affordable accommodation, but says council regulations and red tape are stopping creative ideas. "Councils need to come to the party as well," she said, noting more land needs to be released while in many cases zoning laws were outdated and also needed changing. The developer points to tiny homes being a possible cost-effective solution, but council rules in many parts of Australia make it nearly impossible for people to live in one long-term. "On the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland, you can only have tiny homes on land if they're moveable," Ms Yates said. "And then it's only, I think, 180 days to stay on land. That's not feasible. If you've got to move it after 180 days, that's still no security." Ms Yates also sees rezoning costs as a problem in Queensland after coming up against a $180,000 bill to rezone a double block to be able to build three dwellings. "That one block of land could have accommodated three families," she said. Ms Yates is now focusing on micro apartments (small self-contained living spaces) within homes as a possible solution.
