BREAKING NEWS Senator Fatima Payman accuses male colleague of making sexual, racist comments at social event
An independent senator has alleged a parliamentary colleague made sexually suggestive and racially insensitive comments towards her.
Fatima Payman, who is Muslim and does not drink alcohol, was attending a social event as part of official parliamentary business when she says an older, male colleague made comments like 'let's get some wine into you and see you dance on the table'.
'I don't drink and I don't need to be made... to feel left out because you do,' she told ABC's Triple J radio station.
'I told this colleague, "Hey, I'm drawing a line, mate", and moved on to making a formal complaint.'
The issue has been escalated to the Parliamentary Workplace Support Service, a body established after staffer Brittany Higgins made public allegations about being raped in Parliament House by a colleague.
Senator Payman said the support service had taken care of her and she was happy with the swift handling of her complaint.
The service managed 339 cases between 2023 and 2024, according to its most recent annual report.
Just under one in ten cases related to rape and sexual assault, harassment, assault, sexual harassment, stalking or intimidation, a similar proportion were about bullying.
One in five related to family and domestic violence, alcohol and drugs or mental health, roughly one in four were over workplace conflict and the rest were undefined.

The vast majority were related to those hired to help politicians to carry out duties but not for party political purposes but 17 involved parliamentarians.
Calling out inappropriate behaviour could help others, the senator said.
'Being clear is being kind,' she said.
'You actually are helping somebody understand what your boundaries are by speaking up.'

New Reform MP calls on Starmer to ban burqa
Sarah Pochin called on Sir Keir Starmer to ban burkas in 'the interest of public safety' during Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday (4 June). The new Reform UK MP used her first question to ask the prime minister if he would follow in the footsteps of other countries and prohibit them. Ms Pochin's comment was met with jeers and outrage from fellow MPs. Sir Keir responded by welcoming Ms Pochin before saying he 'won't follow her down that line' and then making a jab at Nigel Farage.

Has Reform's newest MP already gone off message?
Pochin, elected as MP for Runcorn and Helsby in May's by-election caused by the nocturnal activities of Mike Amesbury, asked her first question of Keir Starmer today – and it took a turn which few, least of all her leader, seemed to anticipate. Has Sarah Pochin, Reform's newest MP, gone off-piste already? It certainly seemed so from a first-ever appearance at Prime Minister's Questions which was unlikely to have been signed off by Nigel Farage's office. 'Given the prime minister's desire to strengthen strategic alignment with our European neighbours, will he, in the interests of public safety, follow the lead of France, Denmark, Belgium and others and ban the burqa?'. Farage's face, which was staring towards the chamber's ornate ceiling, was not caught by cameras. For, for all his many, many faults, overt Islamophobia is one rabbit hole he has studiously avoided getting sucked down – less, perhaps, for ideological reasons than for seeing how an obsession with it once he stepped down as UKIP leader damaged that party's standing (when, in 2017, the party's general election manifesto included a ban on face coverings, leader Paul Nuttall endured the best part of week fielding questions as to whether it would apply to beekeepers' outfits). Pochin already looked a slightly troublesome choice, being a former councillor with the dubious distinction of having been kicked out of both the Conservative and independent groupings on Cheshire East council since being first elected in 2015. Keir Starmer, for his part, had some fun with Parliament's newest MP, asking whether she would tell her new leader that 'his latest plan to bet £80 billion of unfunded tax cuts with no idea of how he is going to pay for it is Liz Truss all over again – although considering I think she was a Conservative member when Liz Truss was leader, she probably won't'. But might Pochin be a bet Farage is already having gambler's remorse about?

Another poo jogger strikes! Mystery woman is caught on camera committing a disgusting act outside the same business FOUR times
A suburban health clinic has issued a desperate plea to the mystery jogger who continues to repeatedly use their doorstep as her personal toilet. The Asbestos Diseases Society of Australia in Perth has turned to the public for help following a series of bizarre early morning defecations in recent months, which were all captured on CCTV. Fed up with the unwelcome surprises, staff have released footage of the woman caught in the act, which has also been shared with authorities. They first thought it was a one-off and felt sorry for the culprit when the poo jogger first struck on December 8. She dropped her shorts to answer nature's call just before 6am on March 20 and was almost caught in the act by a passing car before returning around the same time days later on April 1. Baffled staff decided enough was enough when the woman defecated outside their workplace last week. 'Coming in and finding this in the morning is extremely distressing for our staff,' ADSA chief executive Melita Markey said Nine News. 'We (initially) thought, 'Oh, someone's got in a bit of distress and did what they had to do. Staff are baffled as to why the women keeps returning, given the clinic is located within close proximity of a 24-hour petrol station and public toilets. 'It is a biohazard and they are putting people at risk, putting our staff at risk, our clients at risk and also themselves,' Ms Markey said. 'I believe it's a cry for help, (I don't know) why she targets us ... We'd love her to come in and see our GP and see if we can do something to help her.' Psychologist Grant Brecht suspected the behavior could be a sign of obsessive compulsive disorder 'They believe that if they don't do something then something terrible or awful could happen to themselves or someone they love,' he explained Dr Brecht aired the same theory in 2018 when high flying businessman Andrew Macintosh was famously unmasked as the Queensland 'poo-jogger'. Macintosh was named, shamed and charged after he got caught while crouched in the act, a piece of toilet paper in hand in front of a secret camera. 'They are seeking a thrill and they get addicted to the way it makes them feel ... equating it to taking a hit of heroin,' he told the Sydney Morning Herald at the time. 'It can make them feel invincible ... it can also tie into the idea of delusions of grandeur.' In the meantime, the ADSA has posted signs and images of the jogger outside the building in a desperate attempt to ward her off. 'If anyone has any information or can identify this individual who was caught on security camera, please contact the ADSA,' the organisation post online.
