Ernesto ‘Tito' Bessone returns to motorsport at the age of 67

Indian Express03-05-2025

Argentine driver Ernesto 'Tito' Bessone is the only driver in the country's history to win atleast one title in all four of the to categories of the country. He won Turismo Carretera (2003), TC2000 (1996), Top Race (2004), and Turismo Nacional (Class 3, 2003).
However, at the age of 67, Bessone is returning back to compete making another record. He becomes the oldest driver to compete in a top-level national competition, surpassing the age of 66 at which, coincidentally, his father retired from racing in 1989, four years after becoming the oldest champion by winning the Class 2 of the TN.
'It's a huge emotion to return to TC2000. In 1985 I had the chance to witness the change from the Renault 18 to the Renault Fuego and the Ford Taunus to the Ford Sierra and it produced a great phenomenon in the category. Now, after 40 years, I have the chance to experience again this radical change in car models with the arrival of the SUVs and it's an honour to be part of it,' said Tito while talking to Clarin.
He will be part of the El Halcón Motorsport and had tested the Next Gen Nivus of the TC2000.
'I'm going to do it with great commitment, I'm going to give everything I have to be at the best level on a track that I really like like Oberá. I want to thank the category for making this project possible and the sponsors for trusting me,' added 'Tito' ahead of the debut of the new 500-horsepower SUVs designed especially for the category with models from brands such as Chevrolet, Honda, Toyota, Fiat, Nissan and the aforementioned Volkswagen.
Bessone's last race in the TC2000 was on August 21, 2011 , as a guest of Leandro Carducci in the 8th Edition of the 200 km of Buenos Aires. This time, he will be the protagonist, the 1996 champion with a Ford Escort, host of 263 races (among which he achieved 28 victories, 25 pole positions and 31 lap records) and who has just restored the historic Renault Fuego Coupé that he made win for the first time in 1985, the same year in which he won on his debut day in the TC (on December 22 in Buenos Aires).
Who is Ernesto 'Tito' Bessone?
One of the most revered names of the Argentine motorsports, Bessone was born on 3rd April,1958. He made his motorsport debut in the Turismo Nacional in 1979, driving a Peugeot. He won his first title in 1983 in the now-defunct Club Argentino de Pilotos (Argentine Drivers' Club), driving a Datsun 280 ZX, and repeated the feat the following year. He also won the championship in that category in 1988, driving a Nissan 300 ZX.
In 1995, driving a Ford, he won the Supercart title, a category that used the same vehicles as Turismo Carretera, but adapted for racing on racetracks. And in 1996, he won the 2000 Turismo Competición championship driving a Ford Escort. In TC2000, he totaled 263 races and 28 victories.

Messi will come, asserts Kerala Sports Minister V Abdurahiman

KOCHI: Raising fresh hopes of Lionel Messi playing in Kerala, Sports Minister V Abdurahiman on Friday posted on Facebook that the Argentina footballer and his team will visit the state. 'Messi is coming,' the minister posted. Though no dates or venues have been officially confirmed, the announcement comes amid speculation that Argentina may not play in Kerala. 'Messi is definitely coming, that is for sure. The remaining details will be out shortly,' Abdurahiman told TNIE. Last November, he announced the visit of the world champions for two international friendlies in Kerala. 'Team backing out after signing deal unlikely' There were reports that the team was considering playing in other countries in the same window. Argentine sports journalists had put out the schedule for the team's visit to China, Qatar and Angola in their October-November international-friendly break, leading to speculation that the team might not be heading to India during the period. 'It is likely that the team will visit Kerala, as the minister promised, since the contract has already been signed. Though we do not have much information right now, it is very unlikely for a team to back out after the agreement has been made,' said Kerala Football Association president Navaz Meeran.

Meet Franco Mastantuono — Real Madrid's latest Argentine wonderkid target from River Plate

On Friday, Franco Mastantuono made history when he became the youngest player to debut for Argentina's men's senior football team in a competitive match. He achieved this milestone by coming off the bench during La Albiceleste's 1-0 victory over Chile in a FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifier. At 17 years and 295 days old, he made history for the three-time world champions when he was substituted in for Giuliano Simeone in the second half at Estadio Nacional de Chile in Santiago. Meanwhile, the overall youngest player to ever feature for Argentina in any match, including friendlies, remains Diego Maradona, who made his debut at just 16 years three months and 28 days against Hungary in February 27, 1977. The teenager is reportedly joining Spanish giants Real Madrid from River Plate for an initial fee of about $45 million. A talented left-footed finisher, he established himself as a starter under coach Marcelo Gallardo and soon became a key part of the Buenos Aires-based team. Earlier, Mastantuono had been linked to other big European clubs such as Manchester United and Paris St Germain after attracting attention with a stunning free kick in River Plate's Superclasico win over Boca Juniors in April. Born in Argentina, Mastantuono is of Italian descent and holds dual Argentine-Italian citizenship. He was first called up to the Argentina national under-17 team squad by manager Pablo Aimar while still only 15. The youngster was described by River Plate youth coach Martín Pellegrino as a being capable of playing as an enganche, a play-making midfielder or a forward, noting his ball-striking ability.

'Cool' & gaining popularity: How chess became a content machine

To a lot of people, chess remains a very serious pursuit. But it's also at odds with how the game, over the last few years at least, has become 'cool'. It's snackable, memeable and there's content to be had in a lot of ways. You open Insta and there's a chessfluencer giving you a breakdown on how to do a Fool's Mate (one of the quickest ways to checkmate). At the ongoing event in Stavanger for example, there's a four-member social media team, including one from ChessBase India. As soon as PSG posted the image of Gukesh trying to process what had just happened, the team felt extra happy. Because the game — even at the elite level — doesn't lend itself automatically to sponsors and generous funding from corporates, tournament organisers love getting eyeballs like these. Srinath Narayanan, one of the brains behind the nascent Chennai Grand Masters meet, in an interaction with The New Indian Express a few days ago, had mentioned that there could be an inherent bias towards inviting GMs with bigger social media footprints if their profiles are similar. "For example, if you are looking to invite a player rated 2675 or thereabouts to your event and you have only one slot, you may go towards the player with x number of social media followers." Whether by chance or design, chess is also catching on to the trend of hyping up the many young players. Take the case of 11-year-old Faustino Oro, an Argentine prodigy. An International Master, Oro is nicknamed as chessi. A few days ago, Oro faced off against the legendary Viswanathan Anand in a two-game showdown in Italy. Ever since the pandemic began, a lot of stakeholders have pumped in money into one-off events like these because they know this is now content (Hans Niemann played Anish Giri in a similar standalone encounter several days ago). "Though I play less these days," Anand tells The New Indian Express, "these kind of events are nice. You get to go to Italy... the glamour clearly attracted me there, Andrea Bocelli (musician) is playing there. When I get there, I was like 'what the hell if I lose, nobody will let me forget it'. It's not like I never have second thoughts... you have noticed that I don't play that many serious events." Not just Anand, who is, at best, a semi-retired pro. Even some of the players inside the Top-10 play exhibition matches like this because there is a demand for these events. Wherever there's demand, there's supply. It's just basic economics in this context. hugely successful 'Title Tuesday' is also a direct product of games, at least in part, being driven by content. It existed as a corner on the website as a monthly game in 2014. After the pandemic, it's played every Tuesday with over 900 players and a proper prize fund. On a dark, grim and wet Tuesday afternoon, Lokesh Natoo, a chessfluencer with over a lakh subscribers across his social media channels, rushes out with his phone to capture the likes of Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura entering the building, walk down a flight of steps and go inside the playing hall. He spends some 10 minutes editing it, putting in some BGM before uploading it as a reel. As of Thursday, that video has given him over eight million impressions. Content, he says.
