Madly in love with Usha, why JD Vance learned Indian cooking from her mother

received a warm and enthusiastic welcome during their four-day visit to India that concluded on Thursday, April 24. Usha, the daughter of Radhakrishna Chilukuri and Lakshmi Chilukuri, who migrated to the USA from India decades back, received a 'celebrity' treatment in India, in the land of her roots. 'She's a bit of a celebrity, it turns out, in India. I think more so than her husband,' Vance said in Jaipur about his wife.
The couple visited Akshardham Temple in New Delhi, and went on sightseeing tours across Jaipur and Agra. In Jaipur, they explored the historic Amer Fort, while in Agra, they visited the Taj Mahal and the traditional crafts village of Shilpgram.
A very special love story
JD and Usha, who came together from different backgrounds, shared a deep connection from the word go. The daughter of
Telugu Indian immigrants
and the son of a drug-addicted mother, met at Yale University and despite their different backgrounds and personalities started to bond well, first as friends.

for her. She noted that her husband learned how to cook Indian food from her mother.
Why JD learned Indian cooking from Usha's mother
"When JD met me, he approached our differences with curiosity and enthusiasm. He wanted to know everything about me, where I came from, what my life had been like. Although he's a meat and potatoes kind of guy, he adapted to my vegetarian diet and learned to cook food from my mother, Indian food. Before I knew it, he'd become an integral part of my family, a person I could not imagine living without," she said during her RNC speech.
An experimental cook
In an interview, Usha said Vance was an experimental cook and would cook anything from chana masala to dessert, to various lamb dishes.
Vance too is in love with his wife's cooking skills. In a podcast with Joe Rogan, he raved about Indian food calling lab meats 'highly processed garbage'. He shared how his wife makes really delicious Indian food and recommended "paneer and rice and delicious chickpeas" to all vegetarians.
Vance has admitted his association with Usha influenced his life deeply. She not only brought him closer to his religion but also instilled in him a deeper appreciation for family, tradition, and the values of hard work and perseverance that shaped both their lives.

Bhubaneswar: Revenue minister Suresh Pujari on Saturday said Odisha would not be allowed to follow the lawless path in sand operations like it is in Bihar and West Bengal, while responding to the recent assault of an additional tehsildar in Kaptipada block, Mayurbhanj district, by the sand mafia. He promised stringent action against the sand mafia regardless of their connections, while speaking to mediapersons here on Saturday. Majhi, based on intelligence reports, went to inspect sand being lifted illegally using excavators. When he opposed it, he was attacked. Police said the miscreants, mostly goons of the sand mafia, intercepted Majhi's car and tried to stop him from venturing into the sand lifting site in the river bed. Pujari announced free sand provision for Pradhan Mantri Awas beneficiaries, with a draft standard operating procedure (SOP) already in preparation to streamline the process. "The most important thing is how to facilitate the supply of sand at low cost to the lower middle class and poor. We will introduce the provision of issuing permits to beneficiaries of PM Awas to lift at least two tractor fulls of sand for free for construction of houses. The PM Awas will be free from the sand cost burden," Pujari told reporters. BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty commented that the minister's statements are merely an attempt to whitewash the obvious collusion between administration officials and the mining mafia. "Instead of taking concrete action, the minister has limited himself to making empty rhetoric," he said. Mohanty said there has been a drastic decline in revenue from minor minerals from Rs 1,485 crore in 2023-24 to just Rs 600 crore in 2024-25.

India seeks exemption from US' 10% baseline tariff
The fate of the 10% baseline tariffs that the Trump administration invoked on imports from all countries on April 2 is among the issues now at the heart of negotiations between New Delhi and Washington as they attempt to hammer out an early tranche of the trade deal, people aware of the matter have said. Delhi is not in favour of replicating, as suggested by the American negotiators, the approach in the trade deal struck between the US and the UK, where British goods are still subject to the baseline tariffs, these people added. According to a person with direct knowledge of the discussions, Indian negotiators are pushing for their American counterparts to remove the baseline 10% rate as well as commit to assurances that the additional 16%, due to be implemented on July 9, will be left off. An American negotiating team led by assistant US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch 4 landed in Delhi on June for what is the fifth time negotiators from either side have gone to the other's capital for face-to-face talks. The American delegation is expected to be in Delhi till June 10, longer than the previously expected two-day visit. The second person added that India sees trade interests between both nations as being 'complementary and not competitive', hence New Delhi is open to giving greater market access to the American goods in the Indian market provided Washington reciprocates. 'The trade negotiations continue in New Delhi covering all these matters in a constructive manner as we speak and both sides are hopeful for a win-win,' he said. The mini deal secured some concessions for the UK, but the 10% baseline tariff continued. Both partners are racing to conclude an interim, or regarded as an 'early harvest', deal before July 9, which will be followed by a wider first tranche of Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) by September-October 2025. After that a comprehensive BTA will be negotiated, they said. Irate HC intimates contempt against 2 chief secys
Chennai: Expressing deep anguish and displeasure towards the attitude of Tamil Nadu chief secretary in disrespecting court orders, Madras high court initiated suo motu contempt of court proceedings against the officers who served as the chief secretary to the govt from Sep 19, 2023. "This court is expressing its deep anguish and displeasure towards the attitude of the chief secretary in disrespecting the court orders and executing them in true letter and spirit," Justice Battu Devanand said. "As the chief secretary, who is the head of the executive of the state, does not implement the court order and takes it lightly, this court cannot expect that his subordinate officers would implement the orders in true letter and spirit," the court added. The court passed the order on four petitions in which the court directed the govt to implement the scheme of compassionate appointment from 1972 to 2023. The high court passed the order while allowing the pleas moved by legal heirs of deceased govt employees against infirmities in implementing Tamil Nadu Civil Service (Appointment on Compassionate Grounds) Rules, 2023. On June 6, the court was informed that no such report was filed within the time prescribed by the court. Recording the submission, the court said, "After considering all these facts, this court is of the prima facie opinion that the chief secretary failed to comply with the order of this court in true letter and spirit." On several occasions, this court noticed that only after the filing of contempt cases and after issuing statutory notice for the appearance of the officers, the authorities choose to file appeals with delay condonation petitions. No doubt, it is the right of the respondents to file appeals. But it has to be filed within the time stipulated for the limitation of filing of appeals, the court said. The court then adjourned the hearing to June 20.
