Morganton officer resigns days after DWI arrest, investigation ongoing
A Morganton police officer who was charged with driving while impaired resigned three days later.
According to the Hickory Record, Jonathan Chapman was an off-duty crash last month.

State troopers performed a breathalyzer test, and Chapman blew a .17, which is more than double the legal limit.
The interim police chief for the Morganton Police Department said an internal investigation is still ongoing.
Chapman is expected in court in June.

Kim Jong Un's North Korea is secretly infiltrating American businesses via remote jobs, with the help of unwitting U.S. citizens. Christina Chapman, a Minnesota woman whose home functioned as a hub for foreign operatives posing as American IT workers, helped funnel millions into North Korea's economy while jeopardizing U.S. data security. What Happened: Christina Chapman, a 50-year-old former waitress turned TikTok personality, established what authorities call a "laptop farm" in her home, according to The Wall Street Journal. She had several laptops connected to remote access software, allowing North Korean workers overseas to pose as U.S.-based tech employees. They secured jobs at more than 300 American companies, collecting $17.1 million in pay. Many companies, unaware of the scam, sent paychecks and devices to Chapman's address. She handled paperwork, assisted with job applications, and forwarded pay after taking a cut. Authorities say she shipped almost 50 devices abroad and helped create false tax records for more than 35 people. Why It Matters: With international sanctions affecting funding sources, North Koreans are turning to unconventional methods. As per blockchain firm Chainalysis, North Korean hackers have stolen $6 billion in cryptocurrency. Laptop farming is the latest tactic enabling the regime to manipulate the gig economy and draw salaries from unsuspecting businesses. "That's a material percentage of their economy," observed Gregory Austin, a section chief at the FBI. Adam Meyers, a senior vice president at cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, said this is becoming a significant issue for employers who depend on remote workforces. CrowdStrike has identified almost 150 cases of North Korean workers invading customer systems, and farms have been located in at least eight U.S. states. "These DPRK IT workers are absolutely able to hold down jobs that pay in the low six figures in U.S. companies and sometimes they can hold multiple of these jobs," Austin added. Chapman was contacted on LinkedIn with an offer to "be the U.S. face" of a firm that managed overseas IT talent. As per court records, there is no indication that she was aware of the North Korean connection. The FBI raided her home in October 2023 and seized more than 90 devices. In February, she pleaded guilty to several federal charges including identity theft and money laundering. She earned around $177,000 from the operation, and now faces over nine years in prison. 'Nothing Burger': Paramount Stock (NASDAQ:PARA) Gains as Legal Experts Dismantle Anti-Bribery Notion
Recently, we noted that elements of the Senate—including Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren, who recently took aim at Boeing (BA) over the potential shutdown of its fatal crash cases —went after entertainment giant Paramount (PARA) over the possibility that a settlement with President Trump in the court case against him could possibly run afoul of anti-bribery laws. Legal experts took that notion apart earlier today, and Paramount shares recovered, up modestly in the closing minutes of Thursday's trading. Confident Investing Starts Here: Federal defense attorney Ronald Chapman II led off his assessment of the recent Senatorial letter with a blunt statement: 'The allegations are baseless.' That by itself might tell you all you need to know, but Chapman was not out of blunt statements, and let them all fly in a giddy, dizzying display. Chapman pointed out that the anti-bribery statutes in question noted that it was, in fact, illegal to 'corruptly' give anything of value to public officials to influence an act. That 'corruptly' became the vital link, as Chapman noted 'A judge-approved settlement is the opposite of 'corruption.'' Chapman then referred to the case as a 'nothing burger,' and the Senators involved in writing the letter as engaging in '…hyperbolic outrage…' and '…irresponsible…activism….' Chapman's assertions were backed up by William A. Jacobson, professor at Cornell Law, who noted that the claim may have made for '…good politics, but it doesn't necessarily reflect good law.' Highway to the Vegas Zone In a surprising turn, Paramount—working with Advent Allen Entertainment—will be bringing a Top Gun-themed attraction to a parcel of undeveloped land by the Strat Hotel, Casino & Tower. The attraction is set to open in summer 2028, which is quite a bit after the latest film. But it will offer fighter jet simulations, and a bar with piano singalongs. The interesting part is that this is almost 20 years to the day after Paramount shuttered 'Star Trek: The Experience' in Las Vegas. Said experience ran from 1998 to 2008, and offered not only two rides—'The Klingon Experience' and 'The Borg Invasion 4-D'—but also a complete simulation of Quark's from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. One wonders what will be different about the Top Gun experience, or if this too is another potentially short-lived theme experience to be. Is Paramount Stock a Good Buy Right Now? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Moderate Sell consensus rating on PARA stock based on two Buys, seven Holds and six Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 0.84% rally in its share price over the past year, the average PARA price target of $11.92 per share implies 0.63% upside potential.

GoFundMe made for family of Cape Cod high school senior killed in crash after prom
A fundraiser has been established to support the family of an 18-year-old high school senior from Cape Cod who died in a crash after her prom on Saturday. Ava Lodico, 18, of Falmouth, died in a single-car crash on May 17. The crash happened around 11 p.m. on Acapesket Road, according to Falmouth police. Lodico had attended the high school's junior-senior prom, themed 'Garden of Lights,' which ended at 10 p.m. on Saturday. The crash happened about 10 minutes from the prom venue. In the GoFundMe for Lodico, she was remembered as 'a very loved friend, older sister, cousin and daughter to many.' The fundraiser, which has a $35,000 goal, will go to Lodico's family 'to help with any expenses.' It had raised just over $25,000 as of Thursday morning. Services were also announced for Lodico. Visitations will be held from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on May 27 at Chapman Funerals & Cremations in Falmouth. Her funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on May 28 at Cape Cod Church, 1206 Nathan Ellis Hwy. in East Falmouth. After her death, Lodico's loved ones were devastated. 'We were all just dancing and having a great time at prom,' a friend of Lodico's, Erin Barr, told Boston 25. 'It's just so upsetting that this happened and extremely surreal .... She was just the sweetest soul to everybody,' Barr said. One of Lodico's friends, Jazzy Fernandes, said she got a call about Lodico's crash on Saturday night, the outlet reported. She tried to go to the scene of the crash, but it was blocked off, and she found out Lodico had died at Falmouth Hospital. 'It doesn't feel real,' Fernandes said. Another close friend of Lodico's, Bea Mariani, said the two had been planning their joint graduation party and just made their invite list, the outlet said. Mariani took the first boat back from Martha's Vineyard when she heard of her friend's death.
