Launch of Ballito Toastmasters club offers pathway to public speaking success

The Citizen16-05-2025

A passion for public speaking lit up Ballito Hills as Toastmasters launched its newest club with powerful speeches, personal stories and calls for youth empowerment last week.
The launch event highlighted the transformative power of Toastmasters International, with members sharing how the programme helped them overcome fear, build confidence and grow as leaders in both personal and professional spheres.
Among the speakers was Todd Atterbury, who joined Toastmasters to overcome his fear of public speaking.
'I was very shy, but after joining Toastmasters, not only did I gain confidence, I smashed the lights out on that day,' he said, reflecting on his wedding speech.
Each speech during the evening was followed by constructive feedback, highlighting strengths and offering ideas for improvement, true to the Toastmasters spirit of supportive growth.
When it was story time, everyone giggled as Gareth Arnold shared his tale about the time he and his brother decided to skydive naked to celebrate his brother's birthday. In the end, he managed to land safely, with everything still intact.
Charmaine Premlal, co-ordinator of The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund, spoke about the programme's potential to uplift youth.
'It challenges them, but also gives them positive feedback in a safe space. I've seen the impact personally, both my sons completed the seven-week course in Grade 10 and gained leadership and confidence,' she said.
Premlal expressed hope that local businesses would sponsor underprivileged youth to join through the Orphan Fund.
'It would be fantastic if corporates could come on board to support this skills development opportunity,' she added.
Toastmasters International is a non-profit organisation focused on building communication and leadership skills. With more than 270 000 members in more than 14 000 clubs across 150 countries, it remains a global leader in personal development.
Members take part in structured speaking exercises, impromptu sessions and peer feedback, all aimed at building confidence and helping individuals achieve their goals.

Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson call it QUITS

After nearly eight years of an on-and-off romance, Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson have called it quits – and sources say this time, it's final. Multiple insiders confirmed that the Coldplay frontman, 48, and the Materialists actress, 35, have officially ended their relationship. 'It feels final this time,' one source said of the separation. Representatives for both stars have not responded to requests for comment. The couple, who first sparked romance rumours in 2017, were last seen together publicly just two weeks ago on May 16, enjoying a low-key outing in Malibu. Earlier this year in January, the pair were spotted hand-in-hand in India during Coldplay's tour. In March, an insider told PEOPLE that Martin and Johnson had quietly been engaged 'for years,' following widespread speculation since 2020. 'They were in no rush to get married,' the source added at the time. Though breakup rumours emerged last August, Johnson's rep swiftly denied them, insisting the couple was 'happily together.' At the time, a source echoed that sentiment: 'Sure, they've had issues and taken breaks in the past, but things are great now. They both love their careers. They are balancing things the best they can.' Despite that optimism, it appears the challenges in their relationship ultimately proved too great. Dakota Johnson had spoken warmly about her connection with Chris Martin's children from his previous marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow – Apple, 21, and Moses, 19. 'I love those kids like my life depends on it,' she said last year. She also expressed admiration for Chris Martin's artistry: 'I could watch him every day… I feel like I'm watching my most favourite being do his most favourite thing.' Johnson, known for her role in Fifty Shades of Grey , is currently promoting her new romantic comedy Materialists , which hits theatres on Friday, 13 June. Young Springbok receives top award

Bulls forward Cameron Hanekom was officially unveiled on Wednesday as the 'Next-Gen' Player of the Season, which was voted for by members of the media across all five URC nations. He joins Ruben van Heerden (Tackle Machine), Tom Farrell (Playmaker), Ioan Llyod (Gilbert Golden Boot), Harri Millard (OFX Top Try Scorer), and Cam Winnett (Ironman) in winning individual awards for their monumental efforts this season. When it comes to the award claimed by Hanekom, a statement read: 'This category is open to players who were aged 23 or under at the start of the season, and had earned no more than five international caps at the beginning of the 2024/25 season. They must also have played at least nine games in the 2024/25 URC season. In voting for Hanekom, a member of the media said: 'Cameron Hanekom is supremely powerful in a thoroughly focused way, whether ripping the ball off the opposition or carrying it up. He has learned to be more selective at the breakdown and has a massive engine. A thrilling runner in space as well. Previous winners of his award include Munster's Jack Crowley (2023/34), Ulster's Tom Stewart (2022/23) and DHL Stormers forward, Evan Roos (2021/22). In what is effectively a 'Dream Team' for the season, Hanekom has also been named alongside several other South Africans. Elite XV 15. Jamie Osborne (Leinster Rugby) 14.
