Meet Robert Caravaggi of buzzy Swifty's in Palm Beach and the Hamptons

New York Post23-05-2025

Great New York restaurants aren't easily forgotten. And when Swifty's, the society cafe heir to Mortimer's — which had delighted and infuriated the city's bold face names in equal measure — closed its doors in 2016, people never really stopped talking about it.
It turned out that Swifty's was just ahead of the trend. It reopened in Palm Beach in 2019, just before the pandemic that would see practically all of its old Upper East Side patrons make the move to South Florida.
It was all thanks to owner Robert Caravaggi, who is now for the first time expanding his once-defunct club house for the cashed-up and carefree. We caught up with Caravaggi to learn all about the new Hamptons iteration of Swifty's and what's become of its 'millionaire bacon.'
This season, you're bringing your ebullient Palm Beach restaurant Swifty's to the Hedges Inn in East Hampton. It originally opened in 1999 on the Upper East Side. How do you account for its enduring charm?

'We had an excellent launch a year after Mortimer's closed, with a wonderful, long-standing following who wanted their club to continue. We created our own mystique and style that has been enhanced through my partnership with Sarah and Andrew Wetenhall, owners of The Colony Palm Beach.'
What's on the menu?
Swifty's cosmopolitan American style doesn't shy away from burgers and fries.
Glen Alsop
'Guests should expect a similar menu style: cosmopolitan American with European influence. Our menu will include an emphasis on local ingredients, but also favorite long-standing items such as jumbo lump crab cakes with signature creamed spinach and designer [Bill Blass] meatloaf. The 'millionaire bacon' has become 'billionaire bacon.' '
What's your life like outside the restaurant and what's your connection to the Hamptons?

'I know the East End quite well and I have many friends who either live or spend their summers there. But my wife Blaine and I live in the Hudson Valley. I am also a musician. I sing, write songs and play a few instruments in the rock and roll genre. I sometimes perform with my favorite group [Brothers of Others] at Swifty's. The discerning audience seems to approve!'
What got you into the business?
A cocktail at the Hedges Inn East Hampton's new restaurant.
Glen Alsop
'I got my start at my father's New York restaurant called Quo Vadis, starting part time in my teens. It was a classic upscale European establishment that had a very grand following. My father, Bruno, taught me that graciousness in a restaurant is paramount to success. That influence served me well at Mortimer's and Swifty's later on.'
Do you see Swifty's expanding beyond Palm Beach and the Hamptons?
'I do. I think our name, concept, mystique and food is a formula that diners seek out. Our regulars appreciate their long-term inclusion, recognition and familiarity. Our new regulars want the same, to be included and taken care of. Breeding loyalty through generations is very important.'

Produced by Telescope Animation, the feature blends heart, humor and high-stakes adventure for audiences from the age of 6-plus, as we follow Vincent, a not-so-ordinary teenage whale on a deep-sea mission. When a legendary sea monster breaks free from its icy prison and threatens to destroy the oceans, Vincent will confront his deepest fears and journey to the oceans' depths with a group of unlikely companions, seeking to summon his mystical song and save the seas from destruction. Set for release in 2026 in France by Haut et Court to coincide with the opera's 150th anniversary, 'Carmen' promises a 'visually striking, emotionally rich experience with cross-generational appeal.' Exclusive footage of 'Carmen' will be presented as part of the work-in-progress showcase in Annecy. Fresh from its teaser reveal at the European Film Market, 'The Growcodile,' directed by Cartoon Saloon alumni Joost Van Den Bosch and Erik Verkerk, is another standout title on the slate. 'The Growcodile' was developed and is produced by Fabrique d'Images ('Stitchhead,' 'My Fairy Troublemaker,' 'Luis and the Aliens'), in co-production with Freaks Factory, Ka-Ching Cartoons, Cool Beans and Fantabulous. The film follows Bridget, a gifted young girl with a big secret: she has a pet crocodile that she hides in her room. No matter how sweet, the little crocodile grows bigger and more difficult to care for. What to do when your parents don't like pets, and your father, who owns a shoe store, loves crocodile leather? The film pre-sold to France (KMBO), Benelux (Distri7), Greece/Cyprus (Tanweer), Portugal (Nos Audiovisuais), Israel (Tanweer), Turkey and MENA (Italia Film), Poland (KinoSwiat), Eastern Europe (ProRom) and Vietnam (Lumix). Time-traveling CG comedy-adventure 'The Last Dinosaur' will reveal new exclusive footage to buyers in Annecy, ahead of its Q3 2026 delivery. Written by Ben Smith ('Stardog and Turbocat') and directed by Federico Millela ('The Fairy Princess & the Unicorn'), the film was developed and is co-produced by animation studio Red Star, the U.K. team behind 'The Amazing Maurice,' Constellation Productions and Fantabulous, the French joint venture between distribution house KMBO and production outfit Fabrique d'Images. The film follows Rex, son of the King of Dinosaurs, who is suddenly snatched up and transported to the future in a faulty time machine, and finds himself stranded in the 21st century. Desperate to return to his own era to help save his kin, Rex must team up with a gang of nerds, freaks and geeks to go back 65 million years in time. But when he realizes saving those he loves means big trouble for his newfound friends, he will have to face what it means to be the Last Dinosaur. The film pre-sold to France (KMBO), U.K./Ireland (Sky Original), Australia/New Zealand (Umbrella), Benelux (WWE), Greece/Cyprus (Filmtrade), Portugal (Nos Audiovisuais), Poland (Forum), Hungary (Vertigo), Czech amd Slovak Republics (FoxxMedia), Bulgaria (ProFilm), Former Yugoslavia (MCF Megacom), Israel (Red Cape), Turkey and MENA (Italia Film), Vietnam (Mockingbird), and Latin America (BF Distribution). Also in production and slated for a Q2/Q3 2026 delivery is the 'bold and irreverent' adult animation 'Jim Queen,' directed by Cartoon Saloon alumni Marco Nguyen and Nicolas Athané, produced by Bobbypills. The film offers a 'wild, satirical ride through identity, fame, and queer culture in crisis.' When a mysterious virus starts turning gay men straight, Paris' ultimate Gym Queen and his ride-or-die twink sidekick must race to find a cure, and save queer culture before it's too late. Rounding out the slate is the newly announced 'Mission Granny,' a high-octane, gadget-packed CG family caper slated for 2027, with a €10 million budget, and one grandma you do not want to mess with. Stuck with their grumpy grandma for the summer, Paul (8) and Kat (12) are shocked to learn she's actually a retired secret agent. Now, it's up to two rookie kids, one farting dog, and a house full of gadgets to save Grandma, and the planet. Tyler Perry Slams Erasure Of Black History In Politically Charged BET Speech

Tyler Perry wasted no time tearing into Trump's administration and the divisive state of America during the BET Awards Monday night. After sharing a brief story about his son, the billionaire media mogul launched into an impassioned State of the Union-esque address to condemn what has been happening in the country as of late — specifically with the erasure of Black history. 'I want you to pay attention to— don't miss this,' he began onstage. 'They are removing our books from libraries. They are removing our stories and our history. They are removing our names from government buildings as if someone wants to erase our footprints.' 'Because what we need to understand is that if our children don't know our history, they won't know our power,' Perry added. The filmmaker pointed his message to Black viewers, telling them, 'The truth of the matter [is], it's impossible to erase our footprints, because we left them on water. What I mean by that is, we were snatched from our homeland, bought across the ocean and left footprints all the way to America.' Perry continued his history lesson, nodding to the sanitation of African American history in museums and calling out American tragedies like the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, where several businesses were famously burned down on Oklahoma's Black Wall Street in an effort to destroy the thriving community. 'So, this is not the time to be silent,' Perry continued to the audience. 'This is not the time to give up. This is the time to dig in and keep leaving footprints everywhere you go.' He even took a moment to brag about how he's 'made more Black millionaires than any studio in this city combined.' 'Because I'm making footprints,' he added. Perry concluded his powerful speech, saying, 'So I don't care if you're struggling, if you're trying to make it, if you're trying to build a business. If you have a dream, keep making footprints. Don't let anybody stop you. You can do it.' Perry isn't the only star who took hold of the BET Awards spotlight to deliver a politically charged message. Doechii, who won Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, used her acceptance speech to blast the 'ruthless attacks' from Trump's administration after it deployed military forces on Los Angeles protests over the weekend over immigration raids. 'Trump is using military forces to stop a protest,' she said. 'And I want y'all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic rights to protest, the military is deployed against us.' 'I feel it's my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people,' the rapper added. 'For Black people, for Latino people, for trans people, for the people of Gaza, we all deserve to live in hope and not in fear, and I hope we stand together, my brothers and my sisters, against hate. And we protest against it.'
