Cops to seek remand for temple vandal who threatened committee member

PETALING JAYA : Police will seek a remand order for a man who allegedly vandalised several deity statues at a Hindu temple in Taman Sri Ampang and threatened to behead a temple committee member who confronted him.
Ampang Jaya police chief Azam Ismail said the man was apprehended at the scene at about 8.40am today.
'A remand application will be submitted tomorrow at the Ampang Jaya magistrates' court,' he said in a statement.
Azam said the suspect is a 33-year-old unemployed man without a criminal record. He, however, tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.
He said the suspect's actions were not related to extremism, and the man was believed to have been hallucinating at the time, claiming to have heard voices.
Police seized a hammer, a bolt cutter, a bag, two parangs, a keris and a motorcycle from the man.
The temple's secretary filed the police report after viewing CCTV footage that showed a man entering the temple at about 6am today and leaving shortly after.
The secretary said the man returned at about 8.30am with several tools, parangs and a keris and proceeded to damage the statues of several deities.
'The complainant immediately rushed to the temple. Upon arrival, he was confronted and chased away by the suspect, who pointed a parang at him and threatened to behead him,' Azam said.
'The complainant then contacted the police for assistance.'
The case is being investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a place of worship, and Section 506 of the same law for criminal intimidation.
Azam said the investigation also involved Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.
Earlier today, Urimai urged the authorities to take swift and firm action over alleged acts of sabotage at two Hindu temples in Selangor over the past week, including the incident at Taman Sri Ampang.
Urimai's interim deputy chairman, David Marshel, said if such actions are not stopped, they could spark tension and threaten racial and religious harmony.
He claimed that the investigation into the Taman Sri Ampang temple incident was halted after the suspect was found to be mentally unstable.
He said the other incident occurred at the Sri Maha Ayiram Kannudayar Alayam temple in Kapar.

3 dead, including young child, after boat capsizes in Klang

PETALING JAYA : Three people, including a young child, were reported to have died in a boating accident in the waters near Tanjung Harapan, in Klang, Selangor, yesterday. According to an official from the Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), the victims were aged three to 50. Selangor MMEA director Abdul Muhaimin Salleh said in the 5pm incident, the boat carrying six passengers was believed to have lost control before it capsized. He added that a fishing vessel came to the rescue of the people on board but its crew only managed to save one person, with two more passengers still missing as of this morning. Muhaimin said the search for the two missing passengers is ongoing with fire and rescue personnel conducting diving operations, Bernama reported. He said the missing victims were identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife, Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama, and that the three-year-old boy who died was their son, Darren. 'The other deceased victims were Cheu Son Hin, 50, and Fong Yong Sen, 29, a friend of the couple,' he said in a statement here today. 'The sole survivor is Alvin Chang, 17.' A video of the capsized boat being towed to the shore has since been widely circulated on social media.

BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 7 — An engineer working in the Middle East lost over RM1.5 million to an online investment scam recently. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad sad the victim, 40, lodged a report with the Central Seberang Perai district police headquarters commercial crimes investigation division yesterday. 'In November last year the man got to know a woman through the phone and had a relationship before the woman invited him to join an investment scheme called GoldenCrimson that offered handsome returns. 'The man was interested to invest and was given a customer service number and a website link to register, and he invested RM90,510 and received returns of RM108,611,' he said in a statement tonight. The man grew confident in the scheme and made 103 transactions to 31 different accounts totalling RM1,532,563 from Dec 2 to March 8, and realised he was scammed when he failed to withdraw RM4,131,671 through the app but was asked instead to provide additional capital to be able to withdraw his profits. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. — Bernama
