
Pollachi train passengers highlight various demands
The Pollachi Train Passengers Welfare Association has submitted a petition to the Railway Board and the Governor of Maharashtra, C.P. Radhakrishnan, pressing for the fulfilment of five vital demands concerning the Pollachi-Coimbatore and Palakkad-Pollachi-Dindigul sections of the Southern Railway.
Association president S. Balakrishnan emphasised that the Pollachi Junction serves four taluks- Pollachi, Kinathukadavu, Anaimalai and Valparai, and was in urgent need of improved rail connectivity for the benefit of tourists, pilgrims, professionals, students, and traders.
The association has called for the extension of the Bengaluru-Coimbatore Uday Express (Train Nos.: 22665/22666) to Pollachi and Kinathukadavu to benefit the large number of IT and private sector professionals from Pollachi and nearby regions who frequently travel to Bengaluru. It also sought the extension of the Ernakulam-Palakkad MEMU (Train Nos.: 66610/66609) to Pollachi via Anaimalai Road, which would greatly benefit students, employees, and tourists.
The association has also proposed to the authorities, the introduction of a direct overnight train from Pollachi to Chennai Central via Kinathukadavu, Erode, and Katpadi that departs from Pollachi Jn. at 9 p.m., instead of the existing Palakkad-MGR Central daily express that departs from Pollachi Jn. at 5.20 p.m.
It highlighted the need for a direct Tirunelveli-Mumbai (Dadar) Express via Palani, Pollachi, Kozhikode, Mangaluru, and Madgaon (Goa) to improve connectivity to Udupi, Goa and Mumbai, benefitting pilgrims, tourists and businessmen. It also suggested increasing the frequency of the existing Tirunelveli- Mumbai Dadar Express (Train Nos.: 22630/22629).
Finally, the association has demanded an increase in the number of coaches in the Tiruchendur-Palakkad unreserved express (Train Nos.: 16731/16732) which currently has only 12 coaches. Citing daily overcrowding, the association has requested four additional unreserved and two to three reserved coaches, especially to serve the elderly, women, and children. Despite repeated petitions over the past seven years, the association noted that there had been no positive response and appealed for immediate action.

Historian Sampath, technologist Chauhan build AI tool for faster book translations
Representative Image BENGALURU: Bengaluru-based Naav AI, an artificial intelligence startup co-founded by historian Vikram Sampath and technologist Sandeep Singh Chauhan, has spent the past few months in stealth. But the problem they're chasing is hiding in plain sight: India has too much English and too little access. 'A book like Savarkar's took nearly two years to appear in Marathi,' Sampath, whose experience with delayed translations across languages like Hindi, Marathi, and Kannada directly shaped Naav's mission. "Only 5-6% of India reads in English. Yet English dominates everything, books, media, even AI training data." Naav's first product, TransLit, targets this imbalance. It blends multiple large language models (LLMs) and a proprietary workflow to rapidly translate long-form text across six Indian languages – Hindi, Marathi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. An average 300-page book, Sampath claims, can now be translated to first draft in under an hour. Human editors then step in through a custom dashboard, refining output line-by-line and feeding their changes back into the engine. Chauhan, a former senior tech executive who led digital transformation at the Technicolor Group, said Naav isn't trying to build a foundational LLM. Instead, the team is building agentic workflows that orchestrate multiple public and private models depending on language and context. "We've seen models like Claude work well for Hindi. But for southern languages, accuracy drops to around 50%. That's where our orchestration and feedback loops come in," he said. The system currently achieves around 60-65% base accuracy, with ambitions to push toward 80%. The founders are quick to clarify that Naav is not about replacing human translators. "This is not a zero-touch translation," said Sampath. "The goal is speed and scale, not displacement." Naav AI has raised early backing from Bhavish Aggarwal and Silicon Valley investor Asha Jadeja Motwani. Its initial client is publishing house BlueOne Ink, which has committed a pipeline of 30 books. Of these, 18 are already in production. Beyond text, Naav is eyeing audio. Its second product, ZuNaav FM, is being built to generate immersive, multilingual audiobooks and thematic content using voice synthesis and background engineering. "Imagine listening to Tipu Sultan's biography narrated in my voice, with war scenes playing in the background," Sampath said. The startup's next step is scale. For now, Naav runs a service model with in-house and contract language experts. Eventually, the plan is to offer it as a software-as-a-service platform to publishers and enterprises. Decentro raises Rs 30 crore, plans reverse flip to India
Representative image Bengaluru: Fintech infrastructure startup Decentro has raised Rs 30 crore in a Series B funding round led by InfoEdge Ventures, with participation from Stargazer Growth and existing backers such as Uncorrelated Ventures. As part of the move, the company also plans to reverse flip its parent entity from Singapore back to India within the next 12-18 months. The Bengaluru-headquartered API platform, which powers over Rs 50,000 crore in annual payment volumes across over 1,300 clients, said it has turned profitable and will use the new capital to deepen enterprise adoption across KYC, payments and debt collections. Founded by Rohit Taneja and Pratik Daudkhane, Decentro has positioned itself as a backend fintech infrastructure player, powering banking and financial workflows for NBFCs, fintech firms, digital lenders, and banks. 'This fundraise allows us to double down on deep partnerships with enterprise customers and build products that power mission-critical financial flows,' said Taneja. As part of its product expansion, the company has recently rolled out two AI-powered modules – Scanner, a real-time user profiling and risk engine, and Neobot, a multilingual AI voice agent aimed at automating debt collections. Neobot targets India's Rs 10 lakh crore non-performing asset (NPA) burden by providing voice-based recovery support for lenders. The company's payments stack remains its largest revenue contributor. Decentro said the new funds will also be deployed to strengthen its go-to-market efforts across financial institutions. With its planned flip to India, Decentro joins a growing number of fintech startups choosing to domicile locally amid a maturing ecosystem and evolving regulatory landscape. South Coast Railway Zone's work set to gain steam with the appointment of General Manager
The appointment of General Manager for the Visakhapatnam-headquartered South Coast Railway (SCoR) Zone has come as a big relief for rail activists, from the region, who have been seeking early operationalisation of SCoR, since it was announced more than six years ago, in February 2019. The Railway Board issued orders on June 5, appointing Sandeep Mathur, as General Manager of SCoR. While welcoming the development, trade union leaders opine there should be no further delay in the issue of a gazette notification on the zone. The gazette will give the boundaries of SCoR and the Railway Divisions under its purview. The Railway Board has already agreed to retain the residual portion of the existing Waltair Division, instead of merging it with Vijayawada Division as was planned earlier. One part will be merged with the newly formed Rayagada Division, under East Coast Railway (ECoR), and the residual portion of Waltair Division would be renamed and continued as 'Visakhapatnam Division' and the Divisional Headquarters will continue to be located in Visakhapatnam city. The work on construction of the 9 plus 2 storeyed SCoR Zonal Headquarters building, at Mudasarlova, for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone in January, this year, has commenced. Meanwhile, the Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti buildings, constructed close to the Visakhapatnam Railway Station, are available for use by the GM, pending construction of the Zonal Headquarters building. The Prime Minister is scheduled to participate in the International Yoga Day event in Visakhapatnam on June 21. 'The gazette notification should be issued without any further delay. During his visit to the city, the Prime Minister should announce a date for operationalisation of SCoR, preferably from August 15, the day on which India attained Independence,' says Chalasani Gandhi, veteran trade union leader and a Member of the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee (DRUCC) from Visakhapatnam. 'A separate notification should also be issued for establishment of a Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) in Visakhapatnam, to conduct examinations for filling up of vacancies in the four Divisions – Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntakal and Guntur – under SCoR,' he says. Hailing the appointment of the GM, rail activists took to social media saying that the long-pending problem of SCR trains, coming to Visakhapatnam junction, being held by up ECoR, at the zonal interchange point at Duvvada, would be a thing of the past after the operationalisation of the new zone. Mr. Sandeep Mathur is likely to assume charge in Visakhapatnam in a few days, according to official sources.
