Colchester runner says being offside helped discover his speed
A keen marathon runner said he realised how fast he was after regularly finding himself drifting offside while playing football.Mohammed Elbayan took up sport as a means of learning English after seeking asylum in the UK in 2018.The 25-year-old now runs 20 miles (32km) a day after his passion for speed inspired him to join a running club in Colchester."I don't know what pace I run, I just like running," Mr Elbayan told BBC Essex Sport Extra.
Since living in the UK, he has competed in three consecutive London Marathons - finishing in 42nd place last year with a time of two hours and 24 minutes.He dreams of rising up the ranks and making a name on the international stage, but said it did not come without challenges."You need to have a sponsor, nutritionist, diet, food - this all makes a difference," he said."This is the stuff I can't afford, so it's quite difficult but I'm enjoying it."
Mr Elbayan, who is originally from Chad, said taking part in sport had allowed him to build relationships and learn English."When I came to the UK for the first time, my English was not great," he said."I thought let me do some sport maybe to improve my English and communicate with people."Mr Elbayan said he began to realise his faster than average speed when the linesman kept catching him offside during football matches.He added: "After that I had some of my friends tell me I'm very fast, maybe I should try running."The runner gave up football in 2021 and joined Colchester Harriers Athletics Club, training with them on Tuesday evenings.For now, Mr Elbayan's next challenge is the Manchester Marathon on 27 April."I will make Essex proud and Colchester proud," he added.

Turkish outfit Trabzonspor are very keen on the player, and are reportedly willing to cash in on their £9.3million-rated Ukrainian international Oleksandr Zubkov in order to fund a deal for Cerny -who is said to be looking for a salary of around £2.9million a year. Leeds United get verdict on finishing above Man Utd in Premier League table
Leeds United legend Stuart Dallas has discussed how the club can compete with staunch rivals Manchester United once the 2025/2026 season gets underway, with the club having to get one thing right to do so Leeds United icon Stuart Dallas believes the club can eclipse bitter rivals Manchester United in the Premier League next season - if they get their recruitment right. Leeds will be returning to the English top flight for 2025/26 after stunning the Championship this season. With Daniel Farke at the helm, Leeds lost just four times as they claimed 100 points alongside Burnley. However, the Whites topped the division with a superior goal difference. While 2024/2025 represented a joyous season for Leeds, the same can't be said for the Red Devils. Under Ruben Amorim, United found themselves finishing in 15th place in the Premier League and losing to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final. Dallas, 34, now thinks Leeds can push on and challenge Amorim's team come next season, with reports suggesting that the Whites' owners, 49ers Enterprises, have made around £100 million available for transfers this summer. Speaking exclusively to Mirror Football, at the Leeds American Golf for the #RifeDontMiss putting challenge, he said: "The gap is big. That's common knowledge because promoted teams and how they've done in the last number of seasons. I think it is continuing to grow. "Leeds are in a position where they financially can go and strengthen. You can give me £150m and I can go and spend it. What I'm trying to say is the recruitment has to be right. "I think Leeds have got that in place this season. I think they'll have learned from the past and they have the potential to really do something within the next number of years in the Premier League. But again, for me, the recruitment has to be key, which I'm sure it will be." Dallas, who called time on his career in 2024 after making 248 appearances for Leeds, also touched upon the club's Player of the Year for the 2024/25 season, Daniel James. James played at Old Trafford for three seasons before moving to Elland Road, but Dallas isn't convinced United will be ruing the decision to let the Welsh star go, despite the leaps and bounds made by the 27-year-old. "I think Man Utd have had a number of players, obviously like every club, come and go. Dan has obviously found his feet at Leeds and he's happy. I know his family and that's settled here," Dallas added. "He's been fantastic this season. He started adding goals and assists and numbers to his game, which maybe previously wasn't there. He's always had the talent. "His pace is electrifying and it was just his end product that was missing. He started to produce that this year. I wouldn't say Man Utd will look at him and regret letting him go. But certainly, he's had a really, really good season." Cricket called off in Danbury after man says he was hit by a ball
Cricketers have called on a parish council to let them play after the sport was suspended when a member of the public reported he was hit by a cricket sound of leather on willow has been heard in the village of Danbury, Essex, for centuries, but three clubs were now prohibited from using Dawson Fields for alleged incident happened last month, but a campaign has since been launched to reinstate cricket in the village. Rory Carlton, club secretary of Danbury Cricket Club, said: "Cricket has been a huge part of my life, we need the parish council to see sense."The council said it was looking into "mitigations". Man 'hit on leg' by ball Cricket was suspended after an alleged incident on 17 May when Danbury Cricket Club played South Woodham and Burnham's third team. According to the club, an entry was made in the incident log at the nearby leisure centre stating somebody was "hit by a cricket ball on [the] leg whilst unloading/loading his car".Mr Carlton, 36, said none of the players playing that day had any recollection of the incident, and added: "When you are playing cricket, your eyes are focused on the ball and you are following that and tracking that, so we are trying to understand how that happened."Signs have now been put up around the boundary of the cricket pitch, adjacent to the public car park, stating that the sport is currently suspended. Danbury Cricket Club is not the only team to use the pitch, and it is also home to two other cricket teams, Tuskers and Oaklands. Mr Carlton hopes the parish council will let them all play again soon. He added: "It's a really sad state of affairs. For the community, it would be such a shame for cricket to stop being played here."I found a record of a game in 1799 against Little Baddow, which Danbury won, so if it was to cease, it would just be a real tragedy." Danbury Parish Council has organised a meeting for residents to discuss the future of cricket in the village on 19 April Chapman, the council chairman, said: "Cricket has not been banned in Danbury. There was an incident where someone in our car park was hit by a cricket ball. "A majority of the council at a subsequent meeting decided to suspend cricket for three weeks until we had a report from our health and safety advisors as to what mitigations could be taken."Chapman said the council would then consider these mitigations before deciding next steps.
