The Mumbai Customs department Sunday arrested a foreign national at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport for allegedly trying to smuggle cocaine worth Rs 8.65 crore into India. The passenger had concealed the drugs inside his body, said officers.
According to the Customs, on the intervening night of May 24 and 25, based on spot profiling, one foreigner came under their radar. The passenger had arrived in Mumbai on the Uganda Airlines flight UR430.
'Upon questioning, the passenger exhibited signs of nervousness and uneasiness. Further examination and medical investigation revealed that the passenger had swallowed multiple, yellow-coloured pellets, which were later found to contain a coloured crumbled substance purported to be cocaine,' said a Customs official.
After following due legal process, Customs officers Wednesday seized the contraband purported to be cocaine, having a net weight of 866 grams, the Customs department stated.
The accused passenger was placed under arrest under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS). Efforts are being made to apprehend his associates to whom he was supposed to deliver the contraband. Customs officials are also checking if he had similarly smuggled drugs in the past.
As per government norms, 100 grams of cocaine is a commercial quantity, and the accused foreigner was carrying a considerable quantity for smuggling purposes, knowing that it was a banned drug. If convicted of smuggling a commercial quantity of drugs, the accused may be sentenced to imprisonment up to 20 years.
Earlier, in April, Customs department officials arrested three men and two women at the Mumbai airport while they were trying to allegedly smuggle hydroponic weed worth around Rs 30 crore from Bangkok. All were residents of Mumbai and travelling on different flights, the Customs officials had said. The arrested suspects faced serious charges under the NDPS Act, as commercial quantities of drugs had been seized from them.

Delhi businessman held for stalking, harassing woman online for 3 years

What began as a seemingly innocent Instagram friendship in 2021 unravelled into a three-year ordeal of cyberbullying and sexual exploitation for a young woman from Delhi's Shahdara—until she approached the police this week. On Thursday, the Delhi Police arrested a 37-year-old businessman in the case, on charges of sexual harassment, voyeurism and stalking, among others. The police identified the accused as Himanshu Arora, a married man who belongs to a family that runs a sanitary ware business in Shahdara. According to the woman's police complaint, she met Arora through Instagram in 2021. He earned her trust and began to emotionally pressure and manipulate her into sharing private photos and videos, she alleged. Soon, the woman said, she began receiving harassing texts from unknown Instagram accounts and email IDs sexually harassing her and attempting to extort her using the images and videos she had allegedly shared with Arora. She alleged that when she confronted Arora, he said that his laptop had been given for repairs, and he suspected the technician had stolen her photos and videos from it. The harassment continued and escalated, she said in her complaint. Fake profiles were made under her name, using the photos she had shared with Arora, she told the police. She was also allegedly coerced into performing inappropriate acts over Instagram and Google Meet video calls and received threats to pay Rs 1 lakh to end the ordeal. When she did not comply, the threats allegedly escalated, with the harassers threatening to kidnap her, attack her with acid, and harm her family. The harassers even fabricated legal notices implicating her in a murder case, she said in her complaint. This allegedly continued for three years until the victim registered a complaint on Wednesday. An FIR was lodged under sections 75 (sexual harassment), 77 (voyeurism), 78 (stalking), 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 308(2) (extortion) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with sections 66E (violating privacy), 67 (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form), and 67A (publishing or transmitting of material containing sexually explicit act in electronic form) of the IT Act. According to the police, nine fake Instagram accounts and a Gmail ID were used to harass the woman. 'Upon inquiry, digital evidence analysis, and responses received from Meta and Google, a mobile number was found to have been used to create the alleged Instagram IDs. This mobile number was registered in the name of Himanshu Arora's mother, but was being used by Arora himself. Arora was apprehended on Thursday, and during questioning, he admitted to his involvement in the creation, sharing, and use of the compromised data, as well as the sexual exploitation of the victim. The accused has been sent to judicial custody,' Prashant Gautam, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Shahdara, said. According to the police, Arora is a graduate from Delhi University and is married. The police seized two mobile phones containing photos of the woman, a screenshot of a fake Instagram profile with login credentials, and a laptop.

Constable, three others arrested in cheating case in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: A head constable and his three accomplices have been arrested by the Peenya police for allegedly cheating a retired bank employee of Rs 15 lakh by promising to provide rejected Reserve Bank of India (RBI) currency notes at a discounted rate. The main accused, Nagraj, is a head constable attached to the Hiriyur police station in Chitradurga district. His associates, Kiran Kumar, Gajendra, and Prabhu, are all residents of Chitradurga. According to the police, Radha Krishna Naik, a retired bank employee was previously a neighbour of Kumar's sister. During visits to his sister's home, Kumar befriended Naik and later claimed to possess Rs 50 lakh worth of rejected RBI currency notes. He offered Naik Rs 10 lakh worth of these notes in exchange for Rs 5 lakh in valid currency. Trusting him, Naik paid the amount in stages. However, when notes were not delivered, Naik threatened to file a police complaint. Fearing action, the gang sought Nagraj's help, who falsely informed Naik that Kumar had been arrested by the Hiriyur police for transporting illegal currency, the police said. Investigation revealed that the gang did not possess any such rejected currency and had cheated Naik with a cooked-up story, the police added.

'Actor Dino Morea's brother's company got Rs 18L from accused in Mithi scam'

MUMBAI: The city's Economic Offences Wing (EOW), probing the multi-crore Mithi River desilting scam, said that Rs 18 lakh were received by UBO Ridez, a company where actor Dino Morea's brother, Santino, is a director, from arrested accused Ketan Kadam. "We are probing why the amount was transferred from Kadam's account to UBO Ridez," said an officer. Kadam is associated with Vodar India LLP and was arrested earlier this month for his alleged role in the desilting scam. Vodar India and UBO Ridez, an electric cart company, operated from the same address near Famous Studio in Worli, said police. Investigators have searched the office after registering an FIR. Kadam's wife is also a director in UBO Ridez. The EOW earlier this week questioned Dino and Santino twice in this case. TNN
