Global powers scramble to prevent war after unprecedented Israeli strikes on Iran
Iran called Israel's wave of strikes yesterday a declaration of war, while world leaders called for de-escalation. Israel said its air strikes had killed several top Iranian generals, including most of the senior leadership of the Revolutionary Guards' air force, while hitting about 100 targets including nuclear facilities.
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Israel it faced a 'bitter and painful' fate over the attacks, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the attack as a 'declaration of war' and President Masoud Pezeshkian said 'Iran will make the enemy regret its foolish act'.
The strikes killed Iran's highest-ranking military officer, armed forces chief of staff Mohammad Bagheri, and the head of the Revolutionary Guards, Hossein Salami, Iranian media reported.
Khamenei swiftly appointed new commanders to replace those killed, while state media said a senior adviser to the supreme leader had himself been wounded.
World leaders urged restraint after Israel pounded Iran.
'Cannot have nuclear bomb'
'There has already been great death and destruction, but there is still time to make this slaughter, with the next already planned attacks being even more brutal, come to an end,' US President Donald Trump said on his Truth Social platform, adding that Israel has a lot of weapons thanks to the United States and 'they know how to use it'.
Earlier in the day, Trump told Fox News that 'Iran cannot have a nuclear bomb and we are hoping to get back to the negotiating table.'
'Maximum restraint': UN
UN chief Antonio Guterres asked 'both sides to show maximum restraint, avoiding at all costs a descent into deeper conflict, a situation that the region can hardly afford,' according to a spokesperson.
Guterres was 'particularly concerned' by Israel's strikes on nuclear installations amid the ongoing US-Iran negotiations.
'Unacceptable' and 'unprovoked': Russia
'Russia is concerned and condemns the sharp escalation of tensions,' spokesman Dmitry Peskov told state news agencies, calling the strikes 'unacceptable' and 'unprovoked', while the Russian embassy in Tel Aviv urged Russians in Israel to leave the country.
'Deeply worried': China
'The Chinese side... is deeply worried about the severe consequences that such actions might bring,' foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said, calling 'on relevant parties to take actions that promote regional peace and stability and to avoid further escalation of tensions'.
'Diplomacy best path forward': EU
'The situation in the Middle East is dangerous. I urge all parties to exercise restraint and prevent further escalation. Diplomacy remains the best path forward, and I stand ready to support any diplomatic efforts toward de-escalation,' said EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
'Right to defend itself' : France
'France reaffirms Israel's right to defend itself and ensure its security,' French President Emmanuel Macron said in English on X, calling 'on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to de-escalate' and 'avoid jeopardising the stability of the entire region'.
Avoid 'further escalation': Germany
Germany, which for years expressed concerns about Iran's 'advanced nuclear weapons programme', said it was 'ready to use all diplomatic means at our disposal to influence the parties to the conflict. The goal must remain that Iran does not develop nuclear weapons'.

Israel Attack Targets Refinery At Iran's Giant South Pars Gas Field
A fire broke out at Kangan Port in Iran's Bushehr province following an Israeli drone strike targeting on onshore refinery at Phase 14 of the South Pars gas field in the Persian Gulf on Saturday. It was the first attack by Israel specifically targeting Iran's critical energy sector. 'Phase 14 of the South Pars gas field was targeted by a strike from the Zionist regime,' Fars news agency reported. As a result, 'parts of this phase caught fire, and fire trucks are currently working to extinguish the blaze,' the agency said. The news agency, citing local sources and witnesses, said the attack was carried out using a small drone resembling a UAV. The fire at the refinery at Phase 14 has halted production from one of its offshore platforms, amounting to 12 million cubic meters per day, Tasnim reported adding that firefighters have prevented the blaze from spreading to other units. The strike caused a powerful explosion and fire, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported, adding that a separate fire also broke out at the Fajr Jam gas refinery, which processes gas from South Pars as well as the Nar and Kangan fields and is one of Iran's largest refineries. Iran shares South Pars with Qatar, where it's known as North Field. It's the world's largest gas field and provides roughly two-thirds of Iran's natural gas. On Friday, Iranian authorities said the country's oil refineries and storage tanks were unharmed, with fuel supplies stable nationwide. South Pars is Iran's half of the world's largest natural gas field. It is located in the very middle of the gulf. The other half is owned by Qatar, which they call the North Dome. South Pars Phase 14 is divided into an offshore (gas field) and an onshore (processing plant) component, which is fed by pipeline. Iran doesn't export natural gas to the extent Qatar does because Iran doesn't yet have any LNG terminals in operation. Israel launched a series of strikes against Iranian territory, targeting nuclear and missile facilities early Friday, killing senior military figures and scientists. The wave of attacks has continued and resulted in the deaths of at least 78 people with 320 others injured, according to figures earlier announced by Iran's UN envoy. The unofficial death toll, however, could be much higher.

Israel's military on Saturday has been busy touting that its warplanes have total air superiority over Western Iran and the capital area, as the Islamic Republic's defenses have been largely degraded and destroyed. A senior IDF military official has been cited in local media as saying very significant damage has been inflicted on key nuclear sites and that the IDF will 'continue'. 'Since the beginning of the operation, Iran's nuclear project has suffered heavy blows in two main areas: Damage to the production of the weapon core through strikes on uranium enrichment and conversion sites in Natanz and Isfahan [and] damage to the regime's weaponization group through the elimination of nine nuclear scientists with unique knowledge and experience in developing the nuclear detonation device,' the official said. And further that 'all the scientists eliminated in the opening strike had, over the years, been involved in developing the nuclear detonation device.' The CIA at this moment still assesses that Iran does not produce a bomb, and was likely not actively seeking it. Iran's latest response is as follows: 'This aggression pushes the region into a dangerous cycle of violence,' Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says during a call with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, according to a statement from his ministry. 'Iran has responded and will respond in a firm manner to the barbaric actions of the Zionist regime.' Netanyahu is meanwhile maintaining that the has the 'clear support' of US President Donald Trump, in a new televised address: In an English video statement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Iranian leaders are 'packing their bags' amid Israel's airstrikes. Baghdad asks Iran to avoid strikes on US targets in Iraq: official
Baghdad has asked Tehran not to target US interests on Iraqi soil, a senior security official said Saturday, as Washington's ally Israel and Iran traded blows, heightening tensions across the region. The government in Baghdad is a close ally of Tehran but also a strategic partner of Iran's arch-foe the United States, which has some 2,500 troops in Iraq as part of an anti-jihadist coalition. Fearing being caught up in a regional escalation, the Iraqi government asked Tehran not to strike in its territory, a senior Iraqi security official told AFP. "The request was made. They promised us positive things," said the official, requesting anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. The official added that Tehran has shown understanding with regards to Baghdad's request. Before the current escalation, which began early Friday with a series of Israeli attacks on military and nuclear sites in Iran, Tehran had threatened to strike military bases hosting US forces in the region in the event of a conflict triggered by the possible failure of nuclear talks with Washington. Throughout the Gaza war, which began in October 2023 and has pitted Israel against Iran-backed Palestinian group Hamas, Tehran-aligned armed factions have launched dozens of rocket and drone attacks targeting US forces in Iraq and in neighbouring Syria. Before the wave of attacks began, the United States on Wednesday announced it was reducing staffing at its Baghdad embassy, citing security reasons. Several pro-Iran groups in Iraq called on Friday to accelerate the departure of US forces from the country, with the powerful Kataeb Hezbollah warning of "additional wars in the region".
