Tamil Nadu ministers Senthil Balaji, K Ponmudy resign: What's behind the DMK shake-up?

Indian Express27-04-2025

In a reshuffle carried out amid legal scrutiny and political turbulence within the DMK, senior Tamil Nadu government ministers V Senthil Balaji and K Ponmudy resigned on Sunday, with Governor R N Ravi accepting their resignations after acting upon the recommendations of Chief Minister M K Stalin.
The reshuffle, meant to project the DMK government's efforts to project stability amid mounting controversies and judicial scrutiny, had been anticipated following a week of speculation. It comes after the Supreme Court directed Balaji to choose between retaining his Cabinet post and safeguarding his bail in an ongoing money laundering case. Ponmudy, meanwhile, was under sustained fire from the Madras High Court and within the DMK as well as outside over derogatory remarks about religious symbols and women, a controversy that escalated into a political problem for the Stalin administration.
Balaji returned to the Cabinet almost immediately after the Supreme Court released him on bail last September, following 15 months in prison in an alleged cash-for-jobs scam case during his tenure as Transport Minister in the previous AIADMK government. Balaji got back his old portfolios of Electricity and Excise after returning to the Cabinet. Though Balaji was credited as a key electoral strategist, especially in the DMK's 2022 urban local body sweep, his continued presence in the Cabinet became untenable after the top court's directive on April 24.
The resignation of Ponmudy, the Forest Minister who was once considered to hold the sixth position in the Cabinet hierarchy, marks a major change. While his resignation was expected in party circles, Balaji's resignation couldn't have been avoided if his bail had to be continued.
Top DMK sources said Balaji might now be tasked with strengthening the DMK's campaign machinery in the state's politically crucial western region ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, where the party has long faced stiff competition.
'Ponmudy's speech making derogatory references to Shaivite and Vaishnavite symbols was a huge embarrassment. He was immediately removed from the party deputy general secretary post and the leadership has decided to remove him from the Cabinet too. Balaji's resignation follows a strong warning from the SC to resign or face the possibility of having his bail revoked in the ongoing money laundering case and the 'cash-for-jobs scam',' said a senior DMK leader.
In the interim reshuffle, Transport Minister S S Sivasankar has been assigned additional charge of Electricity, while Housing and Urban Development Minister S Muthusamy will handle Prohibition and Excise. Milk and Dairy Development Minister R S Rajakannappan has been redesignated as Minister for Forests and Khadi, a move widely seen as a strategic placement of a leader known for administrative competence.
Adding a fresh face to the cabinet, former Minister T Mano Thangaraj will be sworn in on Monday at Raj Bhavan. He will take charge of the Milk and Dairy Development portfolio. The appointment of Thangaraj, from the northern region, is expected to help the DMK consolidate support in that area.
The reshuffle also reflects the DMK's efforts to retain control of sensitive portfolios at a time when the state-run liquor retailer, TASMAC, is under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate. With Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu declining to take up the Electricity portfolio again, citing workload, the reallocation highlights the challenges facing the government as it navigates legal probes, public controversies, and the perennial balancing act of regional representation.

Calcutta High Court reserves verdict on petition against state's aid to dismissed non-teaching staff

Kolkata, June 9 (UNI): The Calcutta High Court on Monday reserved its judgment on a petition challenging the West Bengal government's recently introduced scheme that offers monetary assistance to non-teaching staff dismissed following a Supreme Court verdict. Justice Amrita Sinha reserved her decision on the petition, which opposes the state's plan to pay ex-gratia amounts of Rs 25,000 to Group C and Rs 20,000 to Group D employees. During the case hearing, Justice Singh questioned the state as to why the decision to grant the allowance was taken so hastily, without any discussion or scrutiny, following the Supreme Court's verdict. Justice Sinha also raised questions about the allowance amount. Addressing the state, she asked, "Why were the amounts set at Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000? On what basis were these figures determined?" The West Bengal government had launched the scheme to provide temporary financial relief and social security on humanitarian grounds to families affected by the dismissals. The scheme applies to Group C and D non-teaching staff who were recruited through the 2016 selection process conducted by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) and have lost their jobs because of Supreme Court order. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, announcing the ex-gratia payments had said that the aid was a one-time measure aimed at supporting those left jobless after the Supreme Court's decision earlier this month in connection with the cash-for-jobs scam. The crisis began on April 3 when a Supreme Court bench led by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar upheld a Calcutta High Court order dismissing 25,753 teaching and non-teaching staff from state-run and aided schools. The apex court concluded that the entire 2016 recruitment process had been tainted by large-scale fraud and manipulation. While the court later allowed secondary school teachers (Classes IX–XII) to return to classrooms temporarily, it made no such concession for Group C and D employees. It also ordered the state to complete a fresh recruitment process by December 31. Meanwhile, the state has filed a review petition against the Supreme Court's ruling. 'Since a review petition has been filed in the Supreme Court, how long will the allowance continue to be paid?,' Justice Sinha asked. She also asked the state whether Group C and Group D employees would keep receiving the allowance without doing any work. UNI XC SSP

Manesar land scam: Court to rule on charges against 3 more accused

Panchkula: In a significant development in the Manesar land scam, a special CBI court has opted to first decide on framing charges against three more people before consolidating the chargesheet against former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and 30 others. Special CBI Judge Rajiv Goyal made the ruling last Friday, following the Punjab and Haryana high court's vacation of a stay on proceedings. The three individuals facing potential charges are former IAS officer D R Dhingra and private persons Dhare Singh and Kulwant Singh Lamba. The court has scheduled July 10 for resumed arguments regarding the chargesheet against this trio. The extensive case implicates former CM Hooda, his three ex-principal secretaries – Murari Lal Tayal (also facing another trial), S S Dhillon, and Chhattar Singh – as well as various companies and their office bearers involved in the controversial land transactions. The Supreme Court has stayed proceedings against another accused bureaucrat, Rajiv Arora, who was named in the initial chargesheet. The scam revolves around 914 acres of land in Manesar, Gurugram district, originally slated for acquisition to develop an Industrial Model Township (IMT). Following the Aug 2004 notification under Section 4 of the Land Acquisition Act, a rush to acquire land at low prices ensued. Builders and land mafia reportedly capitalised on residents' panic, acquiring plots at "throwaway rates". Allegations of political patronage in the builder-official-land mafia nexus led aggrieved parties to court. Ultimately, the Supreme Court directed the CBI to probe the matter, leading to the chargesheet naming former CM Hooda. MSID:: 121731795 413 |

State pushed back 330 illegal foreigners: CM

1 2 3 Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday informed a one-day special sitting of the legislative assembly that about 330 illegal foreigners have been pushed back from the state so far and govt is waiting for floods to recede to send back another 35 individuals. "Of the 330 people we have pushed back, none of them have returned. It is impossible for them to return now," he added. He said the process of evicting illegal foreigners from Assam will now be intensified and expedited. "As Pakistani elements and fundamentalist elements from Bangladesh have entered Assam, we have to be proactive like never before to protect the state from these elements," Sarma added. He said this is also the reason why state govt has decided to revive Immigration (Expulsion from Assam) act of 1950 and enforce it. "Under this law, a deputy commissioner can push back whoever he finds to be an illegal foreigner without referring them to the Foreigners' Tribunals," he added. He reiterated that those having appeals in courts will not be touched. Sarma said a constitutional bench of the Supreme Court recently ruled that the IEA Act is in force and the state govt can proceed under its provisions.
