Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday visited Dhubri and directed authorities to adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward desecration of religious sites
Five people have been arrested in Assam's Goalpara district for allegedly throwing beef near a temple in an apparent attempt to stir communal unrest, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday.
The arrested have been identified as Bodir Ali, Hazaratt Ali, Tara Mia, Shajamal Mia, and Jahangir Alom, residents of Khakilamari in Lakhipur police station area.
Taking to X, CM Sarma wrote, 'Lakhipur Police of Goalpara District has arrested the following individuals for allegedly throwing beef near a temple in a deliberate attempt to incite communal tension post Eid-ul-Zuha:
Bodir Ali (57), S/o Late Jabber Ali
Hazaratt Ali (58), S/o Riaj Uddin
Tara Mia (36), S/o Rupchand Ali
Shajamal Mia (42), S/o Late Hazarat Ali
Jahangir Alom (32), S/o Late Amor Ali
(All residents of Ward No. 10, Khakilamari, P.S. Lakhipur)."
He added that a case has been filed against the identified individuals and strict action is being taken to ensure all such elements face the full force of the law.
This comes a day after the chief minister announced that 38 people were arrested following a similar incident in the Dhubri district.
'I visited Dhubri and directed law enforcement officers to follow ZERO tolerance against elements who desecrate our temples, Naamghars and sacred spaces. The incident of throwing beef at the town's Hanuman Mandir should have NEVER happened, and those involved WON'T BE SPARED," he said.
Sarma chaired a high-level meeting in Dhubri with DGP Harmeet Singh, Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Tiwari, and other senior officials. Tensions persisted in the town despite administrative intervention, prompting Sarma to visit the affected temple, speak with local residents, and review the security deployment.
He further pledged personal vigilance if necessary, stating, 'This time on Eid, some anti-social elements committed a disgusting and condemnable crime by throwing cow meat in the Hanuman temple of Dhubri! If required on the coming Eid, I myself will guard Hanuman Baba's temple all night long."

Five arrested in Assam's Goalpara for allegedly throwing beef near temple, says CM

The Assam Police have arrested five persons for allegedly throwing beef near a temple in Goalpara in a 'deliberate attempt to incite communal tension', Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday. In a post on X, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader said that Bodir Ali, Hazarat Ali, Tara Mia, Shajamal Mia and Jahangir Alom, all residents of Lakhipur, were arrested for attempting to incite tensions after the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Zuha. 'A case has been registered and strict action is being taken to ensure all such elements face the full force of the law,' Sarma said. This comes after at least 60 persons were arrested over the course of a week in connection with communal tensions that broke out in Dhubri on June 8. The tensions had erupted after the remains of an animal were discovered near a temple. On June 13, the state government issued nighttime shoot-at-sight orders in Dhubri to bring the situation under control. Sarma had claimed that the animal remains found near the temple on June 8 were part of the head of a cow. The chief minister claimed that the next day, another severed animal head was found in front of the temple premises, which sparked violence. Widespread protests had broken out in Dhubri on June 8 morning, with a large number of residents blocking a road adjacent to the temple. They shouted slogans and burnt tyres as part of their demonstration. Deputy Commissioner Dibakar Nath issued orders prohibiting five or more persons from gathering in Dhubri town. The administration had also banned rallies, processions, meetings and demonstrations. The situation was brought under control by June 10 and the prohibitory orders were withdrawn. On Friday, the chief minister had also claimed that a day before Bakri Eid, which was celebrated on June 7, a poster showing Dhubri to be part of Bangladesh was found in the town. Sarma alleged that a group was attempting to spread tensions in the area.
