Over $275 million worth of cocaine seized in San Diego by Coast Guard
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - A major drug bust in San Diego as the US Coast Guard offloaded more than $275 million worth of illegal cocaine.
The crew of Cutter Waseche seized 37,256 pounds of cocaine on Thursday.
According to Coast Guard officials, the offload was a result of 11 separate suspected drug smuggling vessel interdictions off the coasts of Mexico and Central and South America by the Coast Guard Cutter Waesche from the months of December 2024 to February 2025.
"This offload represents a small part of a large and enduring multinational, multi-agency effort to combat international drug cartels and deter the flow of illegal narcotics coming to the United States, said Vice Adm. Andrew J. Tiongson, commander, Coast Guard Pacific Area.
During a press conference Thursday, he said drug trafficking is the financial fuel for cartels, who bring illegal cocaine and fentanyl into the US.
The Coast Guard is increasing their operations to disrupt and seize transnational shipments of illicit drugs.

More than 20 people injured after boat catches fire in New York; captain charged with DWI
A boat captain was arrested after the vessel caught fire and injured more than 20 people near City Island in The Bronx over the weekend. Joshua Brito, 33, was charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless endangerment following the incident that happened on Saturday at around 8 p.m. near the east end of Hart Island, according to WABC. The 22 people on the boat were injured, including one person in critical condition. According to officials, Marine 4, a New York City Fire Department vessel, was doing a routine patrol in the area when the boat on fire was spotted in the Long Island Sound. Marine units pulled three people from the water while 19 others swam to shore on Hart Island before they were transported by Coast Guard, police and fire department units to nearby City Island to receive further medical evaluation at a hospital. "Marine 4 gave a verbal for a boat fire and multiple people in the water to the Bronx dispatcher," New York City Fire Department Assistant Chief Mike Meyers said in a statement. "At that point, the Bronx dispatcher had land units respond to come into City Island and begin to accept patients. Marine 4 grabbed three people out of the water. At that point, they transported them to one of the docks that was close by, where Engine 70 was waiting and EMS was waiting as well to begin CPR on the victims." "The other 19 folks swam to Hart Island," he continued. "They were just off the east end of Hart Island, and then they were picked up by the NYPD Coast Guard and FDNY boats and transported back over to the docks at the Yacht Club on City Island." Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire. "The boat, in order to fit that many people on it, had to be a pretty decent-sized boat," Meyers told reporters at the scene on Saturday. "Marine 4 did notice them earlier in the evening and they said there was a lot of people on that boat."

Two swimmers in critical condition after being rescued from Mass. river
Two swimmers are in critical condition after being rescued from the Merrimack River Sunday evening. Newburyport police and firefighters responded to a report of a swimmer in distress near Plum Island Point around 7 p.m., Newburyport police said in a press release. At the scene, they found two swimmers in distress. A nearby fisherman was able to bring one of the swimmers to shore, police said. The unresponsive swimmer was treated by paramedics at the scene. Another nearby fisherman was able to pull the other swimmer into their boat, police said. The U.S. Coast Guard came onto the boat and medically aided the swimmer before bringing them to shore. Both swimmers were taken to nearby hospitals in critical condition, police said. The Newburyport Police Department is still investigating the incident. No further information has been released. 2 swimmers critical after being pulled from the water off Plum Island Point with help from fishermen
Two swimmers are in critical condition after they were pulled from the water off of Plum Island Point in Massachusetts Sunday night. Newburyport Police and Fire said they responded to Plum Island Point and found two swimmers in distress shortly after 7 p.m. Two fishing boats were nearby and a fisherman from one boat brought one of the swimmers, who was unresponsive, to shore. The second swimmer was pulled into the other boat and brought to shore with help from the Coast Guard. The second swimmer was also unresponsive. Both swimmers were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Their current conditions are unknown at this time. "I'm kind of shocked but not really because it is the Merrimack and stuff happens here every year," said Newburyport resident Jacob Kirk. It's unclear why the two swimmers were in the water. Police said the incident remains under investigation.
