Canucks: New trio of assistants named to Adam Foote's first staff
Article content The Vancouver Canucks confirmed reports Thursday morning regarding Kevin Dean signing on as an assistant to new bench boss Foote, and also named Brett McLean and Scott Young as assistant coaches for this coming season. As well, the team announced that assistant coach Yogi Svejkovsky, defensive development coach Sergei Gonchar and video coach Dylan Crawford won't be returning. Article content Article content Article content Svejkovsky was named to the Philadelphia Flyers staff on Thursday, where he'll continue to work under head coach Rick Tocchet. Tocchet turned down an offer to stay at the helm with the Canucks in April, and the team promoted Foote from assistant coach to fill that spot three weeks ago. Article content Henrik and Daniel Sedin are back as player development coaches, while Jason Krog is once again skills and skating coach and Marko Torenius remains goaltender coach. Ian Beckenstein is being listed as assistant video coach, so the team could likely add another person in that department. Article content Article content 'The coaching search was a very thorough process as we wanted to find the best fit for our hockey club,' general manager Patrik Allvin said in a press release. 'Once Adam was hired, we set out on selecting a team of assistant coaches who are good teachers, good communicators, and good people. Footey has done a great job in assembling a well-rounded staff with a strong mix of experience and position specific expertise. I am excited to watch this group come together and am ready to support them in every way I can to help them prepare for the upcoming season.' Article content Dean, 56, recently completed his third season an assistant coach with the Chicago Blackhawks. He's been coaching in pro hockey for 19 seasons and is expected to take over Foote's role of working with the Vancouver defencemen. Article content Article content McLean, 46, has been the head coach of the Minnesota Wild's AHL Iowa team for the past two seasons following three seasons an assistant coach with the big club. Young, 57, has spent the past three seasons serving as director of player personnel for the Canucks. The PWHL is giving the new Vancouver team that will play out of the Pacific Coliseum next fall every opportunity to be instantly competitive and compelling for fans. Article content Vancouver general manager Cara Gardner Morey announced Thursday morning that she has inked a one-year deal with Sarah Nurse, 30, who played this past season with the Toronto Sceptres, as part of this five-day window granted to the new Vancouver and Seattle clubs to sign free agents and players left off the six existing teams' protected lists. The existing squads were only permitted to protect three players initially. Article content Article content Article content Vancouver and Seattle will take part in an expansion draft on Monday, alternating picking players until they both have 12-women rosters. Article content Nurse is one of the game's best spokeswomen, and one of its more recognizable players. She will resonate with mainstream sports fans. The forward from Burlington, Ont., was the first woman to appear on the cover of an EA Sports NHL title when she shared the front of NHL 23 alongside Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras. Article content Nurse is also a cousin of Edmonton Oilers defenceman Darnell Nurse, who is currently playing in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals against the Florida Panthers. She has a gold and a silver medal at the Olympics with Team Canada, along with three world championship gold medals.
