Ghana detains over 2,200 undocumented migrants in crime crackdown
ACCRA, GHANA - Ghanaian immigration officials said they had detained more than 2,000 undocumented foreign nationals in Accra on Friday in an operation to dismantle criminal networks and curb street begging.
Of the 2,241 arrested during the early morning raids, 1,332 were children, immigration services said in a statement.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak said in a Facebook post the operation was "to address the growing concern of organised street begging involving foreign nationals.
"This activity poses a national security risk and damages the image of our country," he added.
Many of those arrested had entered Ghana via "unapproved routes, bypassing essential immigration", he said.
Many of those caught in the raid were from neighbouring junta-led Sahelian country of Burkina Faso as well as from Togo. Some of the others were from as far away as Nigeria.
They will undergo security and medical screening before repatriation to their home countries, with the authorities promising to treat them with "the highest professionalism, with respect for their human rights".
Some local people welcomed the action.
John Gyamfi, a 43-year-old Ghanaian spare parts dealer said the arrests were "long overdue".
"Some of these foreigners engage in prostitution and street begging," he said.
"It's embarrassing: they come here and people think they are Ghanaians and they embarrass the good name of Ghana. If they go, the streets will be neat again," he added.
But some undocumented migrants say desperation, not crime, was behind their arrival in Ghana.
"Finding food has become a problem for us," Chamsiya Alhassan, a mother from Niger told AFP as she queued for a bus.
"Our husbands and relatives have been killed. We are here only to find something to eat," she added.
The Sahel region is battling growing jihadist insurgencies linked to Al-Qaeda and Islamic State.

RAFAH - Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli forces killed at least 36 Palestinians on Saturday, six of them in a shooting near a US-backed aid distribution centre. The Israeli military told AFP that troops had fired "warning shots" at individuals that it said were "advancing in a way that endangered the troops". The shooting deaths were the latest reported near the aid centre run by the Gaza Humanitarian Fund (GHF) in the southern district of Rafah and came after it resumed distributions following a brief suspension in the wake of similar deaths earlier this week. Meanwhile, an aid boat with 12 activists on board, including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, was nearing Gaza in a bid to highlight the plight of Palestinians in the face of an Israeli blockade that has only been partially eased. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that at around 7:00 am (0400 GMT), "six people were killed and several others wounded by the forces of the Israeli occupation near the Al-Alam roundabout", where they had gathered to seek humanitarian aid from the distribution centre around a kilometre (a little over half a mile) away. Palestinians have congregated at the roundabout almost daily since late May. AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls compiled by the civil defence agency or the circumstances of the deaths it reports. Samir Abu Hadid, who was there early Saturday, told AFP that thousands of people had gathered near the roundabout. "As soon as some people tried to advance towards the aid centre, the Israeli occupation forces opened fire from armoured vehicles stationed near the centre, firing into the air and then at civilians," Abu Hadid said. - Activist boat nears Gaza - The GHF, officially a private effort with opaque funding, began operations in late May as Israel partially eased a more than two-month-long aid blockade on the territory. Mandeni head-on collision claims two lives
Two people lost their lives and seven others were rushed to hospital following a head-on collision in Mandeni this afternoon. According to Samantha Meyrick of IPSS Medical Rescue, the crash involved two vehicles on the Mandeni Link Road. The first vehicle was carring two women; one died at the scene, while the other was critically injured and taken to hospital. 'The other vehicle was a seven-seater. The 27-year-old male driver sadly passed away, and his six passengers were transported to the hospital for further care,' said Meyrick.
