Communal post case: Influencer Sharmistha Panoli walks out of jail; arrested over controversial video
NEW DELHI: A law student, Sharmistha Panoli arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through a social media video walked out of Alipore Women's Correctional Home on Friday, a day after the Calcutta high court granted her interim bail. Panoli was arrested by Kolkata Police on May 30 from a hotel in Gurugram for a video she had posted on 'Operation Sindoor', which was deemed communal in nature. Though she deleted the video and issued a public apology on May 15, an FIR was later registered against her at the Garden Reach police station in Kolkata. The Calcutta high court on Thursday noted that the complaint did not disclose any cognisable offence and granted her interim bail. Conditions of the bail include surrendering her passport, cooperating with the investigation, and furnishing a personal bond of Rs 10,000. The court also directed that she be given police protection, citing threats she had received after the video went viral. Panoli's arrest had sparked political backlash, with BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari calling it a case of 'police overzealousness' and 'atrocities'. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hailed the completion of the long-pending Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project connecting Kashmir to the rest of India, describing it as a landmark moment in India's infrastructure journey and a symbol of national unity. 'Today's programme is a grand celebration of India's unity and willpower,' Modi declared.'With the blessings of Mata Vaishno Devi, Kashmir has now been connected to India's vast railway network. For years, we've spoken of 'Kashmir to Kanyakumari' with reverence while describing Mata Bharti—today, that has become a railway reality,' he it a deeply emotional and symbolic achievement for the nation, Modi added, 'The dream of lakhs of people in Jammu & Kashmir has finally been fulfilled. PM Modi also highlighted the project's complexity and said that while the USBRL posed formidable engineering and logistical challenges, the government chose to 'challenge the challenge itself.'The 272 km long USBRL project, constructed worth around Rs 43,780 crore and includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km) and 943 bridges. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday slammed Pakistan over the Pahalgam terror attack, saying that it is against tourism in Jammu and Kashmir and wanted to trigger riots in India; hence attacked 26 tourists in the April 22 massacre. Praising the bravery of citizens of the Union Territory for standing firmly against Pakistan-backed terrorism, PM Modi remembered Pahalgam hero Syed Adil Hussain Shah, the pony ride operator, who was gunned down by terrorists after he tried to save the attacked both humanity and Kashmiriyat in Pahalgam,' Modi said. 'Its intention was to create riots in India and disrupt the livelihoods of the hard-working people of Kashmir. That is why it attacked the tourists.'The Prime Minister paid tribute to Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a pony ride operator from Pahalgam who was killed while trying to protect the tourists during the attack. Recalling his bravery, Modi hailed Adil as a true hero of the valley. PM Modi also hailed the people of Jammu and Kashmir for their resilience and commended their bravery.
