The fight is on for the little guy. Though we've said ciao to heroes like the Ford Fiesta and VW Up, the top cats from Renault and Stellantis reckon European regulations need to flex to save the future of the small car.
Stellantis chairman John Elkann told the FT's Future of the Car summit: 'Our roots are in small cars. They were really the driving force of prosperity. Those cars gave people the freedom that one enjoys with cars. With Luca, we believe 2025 is a year when the EU needs to decide if that's still relevant in the 21st century.'

Luca De Meo – CEO of Renault – added: 'Small cars still have a purpose, and they actually could be one of the ways to boost the automotive market in Europe.

Even though competitors have shifted towards manufacturing bigger cars (mainly exported), Stellantis and Renault sell predominantly in Europe. De Meo said: 'The medieval streets in Salamanca, Siena, and Heidelberg haven't changed dimensions in 20 years and [there's no space] to make the garage bigger.
He said "European regulation is [currently] about deadlines and fines', leading to a 20 per cent increase in costs by 2030 to produce a medium-sized car. That kind of increase can't be swallowed into emissions-free small-car production and has to be passed on to customers.

Thusly, people are holding onto their cars for longer – Elkann cites the average age of a car in Greece being 17.
In their minds, if legislation was adapted to favour 'lower emissions', rather than zero emissions, carmakers could use range-extender (REX) technology – electric cars with a smidge of engine-assistance – and plug-in hybrids to reduce emissions and the price of cars, and make profits to offset the break-even production of small cars.
De Meo said: 'A full CO2 lifecycle approach [means] a car with a smaller battery, using less steel, less plastic, less everything, will be 75 per cent lower impact cradle-to-grave than the average European car.
According to De Meo maths, "a car over 10 years doing 124,000 miles (200,000kms) creates 60 tonnes of CO2 as an ICE. That drops to 20 tonnes as a BEV, but a range-extender or plug-in hybrid is 30 tonnes, still half of emissions".

Earlier this week, Ineos chief Lynn Calder also criticised the narrow 'one-tech solution' approach of the regulations.
With the industry squeezed by US tariffs, slower-than-expected EV sales and increased Chinese competition, Elkann concluded: "Europe needs to decide what it wants to do in terms of its industrial policy.
'Does it want to be a nation that builds cars? Or does it want to be a nation that buys cars?"

Thelwell says recruitment at Rangers will be a collaborative effort... with new boss Martin given final say on transfers
Rangers sporting director Kevin Thelwell insists the club would never sign any player without the approval of new head coach Russell Martin. Martin was formally unveiled yesterday after agreeing a three-year deal to take charge. It's the start of a bold new era under American ownership, with investment of around £20million set to be made on and off the pitch over the summer. Fans are keen to see how the dynamic between sporting director and head coach plays out with regards to recruitment. With such a massive rebuild on the cards, Thelwell insisted, though, that any new signings will be made as part of a collaborative process. And he claimed it will be very much a team effort where both he and the scouting department will help identify possible targets, before Martin gives the final seal of approval. 'Put very simply, the way in which we will be organised is we've got a head coach and a sporting director,' said Thelwell, who will also be assisted by new technical director Dan Purdy in recruitment. 'The head coach is responsible for the most important bit; the preparation of the team, performance of the team, results. 'My role is to try and make sure all the support services that sit around Russell are as strong as they possibly can be to give us the best chance of winning. When we talk about recruitment, clearly, it is going to be a collaborative approach. 'I've never been in this role ever where I have signed a player for the first-team that hasn't been supported by the head coach or manager. We'll talk a lot about how we want to play, a lot about profiles we need and what positions we need. 'Between Russell, myself and the recruitment team, we will sit down and identify players that we think could make us better very quickly. Between us, we will decide about what we do next.' Having left his role at Everton at the end of last season, Thelwell started his duties at Rangers earlier this week as the club ramped up their search for a head coach. During his time in England with Wolves and at Goodison Park, he watched from afar as Martin carved out a reputation as a bright young coach whose teams played modern and possession-based football. Describing the 39-year-old as the outstanding candidate, Thelwell said: 'We've got exactly the right candidate that's a perfect fit for Rangers FC. From my perspective, I've seen Russell's team play for many years. Particularly, if I look back at his Championship season — and also the Premier League season with Southampton — there was a lot to be proud of. 'There's a lot that fits Rangers going forward. Russell's explained quite clearly about what he thinks Rangers need in games. 'We need to be dominating in all moments of the game. I'm delighted that we were able to have those conversations and pleased that he's now sat next to me getting ready to work. 'We wanted to make sure we made as strong a decision as we possibly could. But we also appreciate there's now a pre- season on the horizon and European games coming thick and fast. 'It was clear to all of us from the start that Russell was the outstanding candidate, so we're delighted he's joined us. He's had a strong career, over 250 games both as a manager or head coach. Over the course of that journey, he has sharpened his approach, from a technical and tactical perspective — but also from a personal perspective. 'I'm very excited to see what he's going to bring to Rangers and the team is very much looking forward to working with him.' Rangers chief executive Patrick Stewart added: 'Our criteria for our next coach were clear: we wanted a coach who will excel in terms of how we want to play, improve our culture, develop our squad, and ultimately win matches. It means the pre-existing Turbo SE now shifts into the middle ground. Of course. As the name suggests, the V6 SE will continue to use Toyota's 3.5-litre supercharged, er, V6. Rated at 400bhp and 310lb ft of torque, it's good for 0-62mph in 4.3s. To help you do just that, the six-speed manual 'box gains a new compression mount for slicker shifts. Advertisement - Page continues below Elsewhere, Lotus has tweaked the damper calibration and made subtle tweaks to the wheel alignment, sharpening up the handling and improving ride quality as a result. Aside from the model-specific badging, the V6 will get 20in forged alloys, red brake calipers and a 'Zing Grey' paint finish as standard. You'll also get the option of Lotus' new 'Racing Line' accents, which add a subtle pinstripe to the exterior and colour-matched mirror caps. Moving on to the Turbo, it'll pinch the same twin-scroll 2.0-litre four-pot as the Turbo SE, albeit detuned to 360bhp and 317lb ft. Still, it's just one-tenth off the V6's 0-62mph time, and tops out at a still respectable 171mph (compared to the V6's 180mph). The kit list is healthy too: 10in infotainment screen, 190-watt audio system and 12-way adjustable seats as standard. Plus, a safety suite with technologies like Traffic Sign Recognition, Blind Spot Warning and Fatigue Detection.
