Ukraine yet to give decision on taking part in Istanbul talks

Dubai Eye2 days ago

Ukraine wants to see a document setting out Russia's proposals for a peace deal before it sends a delegation to Istanbul for bilateral talks, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on Friday.
Russia has proposed that negotiators from the two sides meet in Istanbul on June 2, but Kyiv has said it needs reassurances that Moscow is sincere about wanting to end the war.
Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago, made the proposal after US President Donald Trump urged Moscow and Kyiv to work together on a peace deal.
Expectations for the talks are modest because the positions staked out so far by the two sides are far apart and work between them has yet to begin in earnest on narrowing the gap.
At a joint news conference in Kyiv on Friday with visiting Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Sybiha stopped short of confirming that Ukraine would take part in the Istanbul talks.
"In order for the next planned meeting to be substantive and meaningful, it is important to receive a document in advance so that the delegation that will attend has the authority to discuss the relevant positions," Sybiha said.
He said that, to date, Ukraine had not received the memorandum it was expecting from Russian negotiators containing their proposals for discussion in Istanbul.
Sybiha did not spell out what Kyiv would do if it did not receive the Russian document, or set out a deadline for receiving it.
"We want to end this war this year, and we are interested in establishing a truce, whether it is for 30 days, or for 50 days, or for 100 days," Sybiha said. "Ukraine is open to discussing this directly with Russia. We confirmed this during the last meeting of our delegations with the Russian side."
US PRESSURE
Speaking to US network ABC, Trump envoy Keith Kellogg indicated he was expecting that the June 2 bilateral talks in Istanbul would go ahead.
Both Kyiv and Moscow are keen to demonstrate to Trump that they are on board with his efforts to end the conflict. Kyiv is seeking more US military aid, while Moscow hopes he will ease economic sanctions on Russia.
Russia has said its delegation at the Istanbul talks will be led by Vladimir Medinsky, a Kremlin aide who led the Russian team for a previous round of talks in the Turkish city on May 16. Those talks produced no breakthrough.
Turkey's Fidan, who earlier this week visited Moscow, said on Friday his country stood ready to host another round of talks between Russia and Ukraine.
"This is our view: as long as (the sides) remain at the negotiating table, progress can surely be seen," he told the news conference.
If the talks go ahead in Istanbul, the next step would be to try to host a meeting between Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he added.

'I am NOT taking drugs!' Musk denies damning report

Elon Musk on Saturday denied a report that he used ketamine and other drugs extensively last year on the 2024 campaign trail. The New York Times reported Friday that the billionaire adviser to President Donald Trump used so much ketamine, a powerful anesthetic, that he developed bladder problems. The newspaper said the world's richest person also took ecstasy and mushrooms and traveled with a pill box last year, adding that it was not known whether Musk also took drugs while heading the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) after Trump took power in January. In a post Saturday on X, Musk said: "To be clear, I am NOT taking drugs! The New York Times was lying their ass off." He added: "I tried 'prescription' ketamine a few years ago and said so on X, so this not even news. It helps for getting out of dark mental holes, but haven't taken it since then." Musk first dodged a question about his drug use at a bizarre farewell appearance Friday with Trump in the Oval Office in which the Tesla and SpaceX boss sported a noticeable black eye as he formally ended his role as Trump's main cost-cutter at DOGE, which fired tens of thousands of civil servants. News of the injury drew substantial attention as it came right after the Times report on his alleged drug use. The daily recalled erratic behavior such as Musk giving an enthusiastic Nazi-style salute in January of this year at a rally celebrating Trump's inauguration. Musk said he got the injury while horsing around with his young son, named X, when he told the child to hit him in the face. "And he did. Turns out even a five-year-old punching you in the face actually is..." he added, before tailing off. Later Friday, when a reporter asked Trump if he was aware of Musk's "regular drug use," Trump responded: "I wasn't." "I think Elon is a fantastic guy," he added.

At least 7 dead after bridges collapses onto passenger train in Russia

At least seven people were killed and 69 injured when a highway bridge collapsed onto railway tracks, derailing an approaching train in Russia's Bryansk region late on Saturday. Russia's Railways initially posted on the Telegram messaging app that the Bryansk bridge collapse was the result of an "illegal interference in the operation of transport", but the post was later removed. Bryansk Governor Alexander Bogomaz said on Telegram that 47 people were hospitalised. Three children were among those injured with one in serious condition, he said. The train was going from the town of Klimovo to Moscow, Russian Railways said. It collided with the collapsed bridge in the area of a federal highway in the Vygonichskyi district of the Bryansk region, Bogomaz said. The district lies some 100 km from the border with Ukraine. Hours later another bridge collapsed in Russia's Kursk region while a freight train was crossing the bridge. "Part of the train fell onto a road underneath the bridge," Alexander Khinshtein, acting governor of the region, and Russian Railways said on Telegram, posting a photo of derailed carriages on a damaged bridge over a road. He added that the locomotive caught fire, which was quickly extinguished. One of the drivers sustained leg injuries, and he and the team operating the train were taken to a local hospital, Khinshtein added. Reuters could not independently confirm whether the incidents in the neighbouring regions were related. The areas in Russia's south have been subject to frequent attacks by Ukraine during the war that Russia started with its full-scale invasion more than three years ago. Russia's Baza Telegram channel, which often publishes information from sources in the security services and law enforcement, reported, without providing evidence, that according to preliminary information, the Bryansk bridge had been blown up. Prominent Russian military blogger Semyon Pegov, who uses the name War Gonzo, called the Bryansk collapse "sabotage." Reuters could not independently verify the Baza or Pegov's reports. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. Since the war began in February 2022, there have been continued cross-border shelling, drone strikes and covert raids from Ukraine into the Bryansk, Kursk and Belgorod regions that border Ukraine. Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations said on Telegram that efforts to find and rescue victims in the Bryansk incident continued throughout the night, and that some 180 personnel were involved in the operation.
