Imagine the horror if you bit into your delicately crafted PB&J and a crunch radiated through your jaw as you hit a piece of plastic. This one-sentence horror story is far from fiction. Foreign objects, undeclared allergens, and bacteria can all ruin our favorite foods and cause a mass recall across retailers. Throughout the years, thousands of loaves of bread from your favorite brands have been pulled from American markets for a variety of health concerns. These major recalls will make you want to check your bread twice.

Sara Lee is a nationwide brand that stocks the shelves of grocery stores with multiple varieties of fluffy bread. In 2007, the brand put out a warning to consumers and retailers stating that several loaves of bread might contain stray pieces of metal. The size of the metal pieces was unknown, because the brand recalled the items following an internal maintenance request, before customers came into contact with them. The whole grain flour sifter was identified as the culprit of the contamination, after it sustained damage that caused it to shed pieces of metal into the flour processed through it.
Unfortunately, many product recalls originate from customer reports of foreign objects in the food or illness after consumption. Luckily, this recall was voluntary and not due to actual injury. Nevertheless, it resulted in bread from 27 brands being pulled from shelves. At the time, Sara Lee was an independent brand that owned several subsidiaries, including EarthGrains, Publix, and Sara Lee Hearty & Delicious. The contaminated bread was sold in primarily Southern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee. For unlucky customers who purchased these affected batches of bread, a refund was available at the point of purchase.
Bimbo Bakeries is the parent company to a large number of beloved bread brands, even acquiring the aforementioned Sara Lee in 2010. That same year, the brand had a troubling production slipup. Loaves of bread across several states were sold without warning customers the product contained dairy. For customers without a dairy allergy, this recall was not of any concern, but it was potentially detrimental to those with serious allergies or food sensitivities. The cause of this labeling error was not reported by the brand and did not seem to accompany any sudden change to the product's recipe.
This packing mistake was isolated to just one product (Bimbo Soft White Bread) and did not affect any subsidiary brands. The particular batch of unlabelled bread was distributed to California, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Luckily, the brand was able to identify the bungle and issue a recall before any consumers reported illness, hopefully giving people the chance to check their bread before chowing down.
Bimbo Bakeries found itself at the center of another major food recall in 2013. Unfortunately, this recall was not isolated to one brand, but affected multiple subsidiaries of the parent company: Arnold, Aldi, Brownberry, Harmons, Farm Bread, Stroehmann, EarthGrains, and Sara Lee. The company voluntarily recalled the bread after discovering that a faulty mesh screen may have been dropping pieces of flexible wire into baked bread products.
The products in question were spread across all 50 states. In this case, the food was not merely mislabeled, but ingredients that were not intended to be incorporated into the bagels infiltrated the production process. Undeclared nut allergens are very dangerous, as unsuspecting customers with these allergies could potentially experience a life threatening reaction.

Biting into what should be pillowy slices of bread and being met with an unexpected crunch is downright dangerous. This was almost the case for at least three consumers, who reported seeing glass fragments on the outside of their bread. Luckily, the customers didn't consume any of the bread, and there were no reports of injuries related to this recall.
Bimbo, Great Value, Kroger, L'Oven Fresh, Nature's Harvest, and Sara Lee were all affected by the incident, with the recall spanning 11 states, primarily in the South.
Koffee Kup used to be a Vermont staple, with baked goods sold in gas stations, grocery stores, and convenience stores across New England. Unfortunately, the brand shuttered its doors in 2021, just five years after a large recall.
In 2016, a whopping 99,000 packages of bread products were recalled by the brand because they might contain clear plastic pieces. The plastic bits originated from a larger piece of plastic that found its way on to the production line, shattered, and was possibly baked into bread. Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Washington D.C., and Virginia were all recipients of these recalled goods. The brand's pastry products seem to be more popular than the bread products, and news coverage at the time reassured customers that the donuts and crullers were made separately from the recalled bread.
Flowers Foods is a longstanding American brand that has grown to be one of the biggest baking companies in the country. Just under 100 years after the company's founding in 1919, the great brand proved fallible when it announced a large recall of its fresh bread products.
This recall was outside of the realm of foreign object contaminants and veered into a territory that is more difficult to detect: bacteria contamination, namely salmonella. The company's whey powder provider flagged the potential contamination in its ingredients and issued the recall. Products from Baker's Treat, Food Lion, Great Value, H-E-B, Mrs. Freshley's, and Market Square were recalled across the entire nation, including bread and sweet treats like Swiss Rolls.
No illness was reported as a result of this recall, though salmonella poisoning can lead to fever and digestion issues. A slice of bread isn't always the obvious culprit when it comes to food poisoning, though, so people may not have made the association.
Flower Foods returned to the recall spotlight just three years after its first widespread recall incident. Although this recall included fewer brands, the two contaminated products were sold across the nation. In this case, the brand's scrumptious snack cakes, Tastykake cupcakes and Krimpets, were recalled due to foreign object contamination.
The grocery store desserts were pulled from shelves after an ingredient supplier informed the brand that products made with its ingredients might contain mesh wiring. Tastykake cupcakes were only sold to eight states, but the Krimpets were peppered across the country. Biting into a delicious loaf of icing piped cake only to discover bit of metal inside would not be a sweet surprise.
No customers reported incidents or injuries from the contamination which is fortunate, especially considering the brand had to amend the original recall from cupcakes to include the affected Krimpets. Swiftly notifying customers of any issues with food products is critical to ensuring health and safety.
In 2021, Flower Foods once again found itself recalling bread distributed to grocery stores and consumers across the country. This recall was not a typical contamination, but rather a product switcheroo. Flower Foods recalled Nature's Own Honey Wheat bread because in reality, the packages had been wrongly filled with Nature's Own Butterbread. The Butterbread required an allergen warning for the dairy contained in the product, which was consequently missing.
The brand reported that 3,000 loaves of the mismatched bread were sold. Consumers who thought they had purchased Honey Wheat Bread may have noticed something was off about the bread before indulging in a slice. Thankfully, there were no customer reports of illness in connection with the incident.
This silly mix-up could have had dire consequences for consumers with dairy allergies. For the rest, it's still frustrating not to end up with your preferred variety of bread. Regardless of the level of inconvenience, all customers were able to return their mislabeled products for a refund if they wanted.
Piantedosi Baking Company is a New England based brand that provides bread to local grocery stores and restaurants, and more widely to nationwide chains. Loaves, rolls, and buns ... this bakery does it all. The brand's 2022 recall also had it all, with several varieties of bread being pulled from shelves and flagged as potentially dangerous.
The recall occurred due to a terrifying food poisoning culprit: Clostridium Botulinum, or more commonly known as, botulism. Another bacteria, Cronobacter sakazakii, was also potentially present in the products. The recall was issued after raw materials from the ingredient supplier Lyons Magnus were used in the creation of these baked delights. Multiple varieties of dinner rolls, sandwich rolls, and buns were affected.
No customers reported illness and the harmful bacteria was not found in any Piantedosi items that were tested, but the brand issued the recall in an abundance of caution. Botulism is a very serious foodborne illness that can lead to muscle paralysis and ultimately death. Cronobacter sakazakii infections are rare but can cause illness in people of all ages, and are particularly deadly for infants. It is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to this dangerous contaminant.

Opinion - We're cancer doctors. Here's why Medicare Advantage fails America's elderly.
'It's nothing,' Tom, a retired firefighter from rural Texas, thought when he had persistent stomach pain. After shedding 30 pounds in three weeks, his family physician ordered a CT scan. Tom was not concerned — after all, the 65-year-old had gotten Medicare Advantage earlier that year. Like millions, Tom switched his insurance after he was solicited by a broker who promised low premiums and a gift card. Absent from the sales pitch was the fact that Medicare Advantage plans — privately run and separate from government-funded traditional Medicare — often delay and deny coverage. One of us met Tom nearly three months after his CT scan, and his doctor discovered the abdominal mass. The job as the first oncologist he had been able to see after months of jumping through hoops was to get initial scans, identify an in-network provider, wait for further referral and approval processes and finally schedule and complete a biopsy. The delays became a death knell. Tom was diagnosed with Stage 3 pancreatic cancer. Tom's first question was, 'It's going to be fine, right?' Despite the urge to reassure him, Tom's life and treatment options were not up to a doctor. They were up to his insurance. The same insurance that delayed urgent testing and care. By definition, Medicare Advantage is meant to support elderly medical care and increase efficiencies; in function, it is a business model that allows the American government to decrease its liability for sick seniors. Instead of absorbing and managing costs, the responsibility is outsourced to third-party operators, such as UnitedHealth Group, Humana and CVS Health. While Medicare Advantage provides excellent coverage if you never get sick, this insurance can quickly become a precursor to medical bankruptcy if the patient develops a deadly disease, a highly probable outcome when you consider that nearly 40 percent of Americans get cancer in their lifetime. After nearly two decades of experimentation and $450 billion of taxpayer money, Medicare Advantage has proven porous in terms of corruption, fraud and abuse. Yet, 32.8 million elderly Americans (54 percent of the eligible Medicare population) are currently enrolled in Medicare Advantage. In 2023 alone, Medicare Advantage plans fully or partially denied 3.2 million prior authorization requests. No one, especially among folks facing the daily drudgery of fighting cancer, truly understands how the cogs within the insurance machine work. Few of our elderly patients fight the goliath institution, and many succumb to poorer health outcomes in their quest for lifesaving treatment. Last year, countrywide and across disease groups, 79 percent of patients who experienced a delay or denial of coverage paid out of pocket for medication at least sometimes. Unsurprisingly, more than 100 million Americans are in medical debt. Of those who appealed between 2019 and 2023, over 80 percent were approved, implying that the initial claims were valid. This game of attrition directly contradicts Medicare Advantage's promise to provide efficient, patient-centered healthcare. These denials are not just medically dangerous because they enable deadly diseases to progress unchecked. They are also emotionally erosive. Daily, we see patients shrink in the face of denials, unable to emotionally navigate the complex Medicare system and the immense pain, isolation and depression resulting from this behemoth that stands between their disease and their hope to be free of it. During one of Tom's chemo visits, with thousands of dollars worth of IVs in his veins, his skin pale and translucent, he realized he was begging his insurance at every turn to support him. Stories like Tom's reveal the truth: Medicare Advantage is unapologetically failing its elderly cancer patients. Sick American seniors deserve more than insurance coverage in name only. We advise our patients to avoid Medicare Advantage. The better choice is traditional Medicare, plus a secondary or supplemental insurance. Often, people do not enroll in supplemental insurance because they do not understand its importance, believe they will never get sick, miss the deadline for approval without a medical exam (you must do this within three months before or after your 65th birthday), or think it is too expensive. Although supplemental insurance costs nearly $500 a month (exact amounts vary based on age and income), choosing this add-on — and paying roughly $6,000 a year — is much more affordable than Medicare Advantage's yearly out-of-pocket (potentially adding up to $8,500) and fighting for approvals for basic treatment. On Medicare Advantage, Tom quickly reached his maximum yearly out-of-pocket of $8,500, but then it reset on Jan. 1. After four months of treatment, he was responsible for paying $17,000 for 16 months of care, on top of his insurance premiums, simply to receive standard care. Of course, if you are one of the fortunate few to have never experienced illness — and we hope you are — Medicare Advantage can be a cheaper option. The question is, how can we make Medicare Advantage advantageous for the vulnerable? There is a bipartisan opportunity to change the narrative around this insurance model. During his confirmation hearing as the head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Mehmet Oz criticized Medicare Advantage insurers for some of their practices. Strategic change — omitting out-of-pocket costs for cancer patients, curbing insurance companies' rights to deny claims submitted by doctors and speeding up the process — along with more rigorous oversight of the program are worthwhile goals the Trump administration and Congress should take on. While Democrats and Republicans disagree on many issues, we believe we can all agree that people like Tom — and the millions of other Americans enrolled in Medicare Advantage — deserve comprehensive and just care. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sent a flood of texts to Bill Nye trying to convince the beloved 'Science Guy' of his anti-vax claims. The old text chain, sent before Kennedy became Donald Trump's health secretary, was revealed by Nye during a Men's Health profile of the children's television presenter. The barrage of messages from the prominent vaccine skeptic, which the magazine described as 'miles and miles of texts,' contained numerous links to articles and websites peddling vaccine-autism conspiracies that Nye said he paid no real attention to. 'Just no self-awareness,' Nye said. 'And if you read these articles he sent, they're all this speculation about autism and just cause-and-effect, and mercury in vaccines, that maybe there's a connection. I wrote him back and said, 'Okay, I'll read your book. I think you've confused causation with correlation. Your friend, Bill.'' The stream of messages did not end there, Nye said, even after he told Kennedy, 'Okay, no more texts.' 'He started again! So I cut him off,' Nye said. 'He does not have good judgment. He is not suited for this job.' The Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Beast. Kennedy has led a full-blown assault on vaccines as part of the Trump administration's campaign to restore public 'trust' in the lifesaving shots. That includes the shock move to fire all 17 members of the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), an expert panel that evaluates vaccine safety and efficacy. All had been appointed under the Biden administration. In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Kennedy said vaccines had become a 'divisive issue in American politics' and that public confidence in the health agencies that provide them is 'waning.' Nye said the increase in vaccine skepticism, which soared amid the COVID-19 pandemic, is having real life negative consequences on people's lives. That includes the reaction to a measles outbreak in Texas that primarily hit unvaccinated individuals in the Mennonite community. 'It was a religious sect with historically low vaccination rates. And the argument from the other side is: They have rights not to get vaccinated. No, you don't,' a frustrated Nye said. 'Unvaccinated people can, and usually do, spread a disease. And that's why we have these rules, for public health! It's not arbitrary. It's not about your rights. It's about my rights, people.' Nye didn't hold back on Kennedy's bizarre public stunts either—like chugging raw milk with health influencer Dr. Paul Saladino to promote the Trump administration's initially error-riddled Make America Healthy Again report on childhood illness. FDA Approves New 3-in-1 Combo Pill for High Blood Pressure
June 11, 2025 – The FDA has approved a new pill for adults with high blood pressure (hypertension) that combines three medicines in one. Available in one regular and two lower doses, it offers a convenient option for treating hypertension, which affects nearly half of the adults in the U.S. and raises their risk of stroke and heart failure. Sold as Widaplik, it is the first and only single pill to combine three previously FDA-approved drugs – telmisartan, amlodipine, and indapamide – offering a triple-action approach for people who would otherwise need multiple pills to manage their blood pressure. It works in three ways and is a safe, well-tolerated early treatment option. Hypertension happens when your blood pushes too hard against your blood vessels, making the heart work harder and increasing the risk of heart problems, strokes, and other complications. It contributes to about 460,000 deaths annually in the U.S. and often goes undetected due to a lack of symptoms. With 1 in 3 Americans unaware they have it and only 1 in 4 managing it well, there's an urgent need for simpler, more effective treatments. The approval was based on two large studies that showed using Widaplik helped lower blood pressure more than using just two medicines or a placebo, according to a news release from the company that makes it, George Medicines. People who took Widaplik didn't stop taking it more often because of side effects, which means it was generally easy for them to take. Another trial showed that Widaplik was better at reducing blood pressure compared to standard care, while remaining well-tolerated. George Medicines stated that a global trial is underway to find out if the combo treatment can help prevent strokes in people who have previously had an intracerebral hemorrhage (sudden bleeding in the brain), the most serious type of stroke. "Single-pill combination antihypertensive therapy has great potential to improve hypertension control in the US and worldwide. Most patients with hypertension need multiple therapies to achieve their blood pressure goals. The new dose options available with Widaplik offer a treatment regimen that could benefit a broad range of patients, including those just starting treatment," Paul Whelton, MD, Show Chwan chair of global public health at Tulane University in New Orleans and past president of the World Hypertension League, said in a statement. Widaplik is a medicine made of three drugs that work together to help lower blood pressure. Two of them, telmisartan and amlodipine, relax blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. The third, indapamide, helps your body get rid of extra water by making you pee more. Widaplik comes in three strengths: 10/1.25/0.625 mg, 20/2.5/1.25 mg, and 40/5/2.5 mg. Low blood pressure – which can make you feel faint or dizzy – was the most common side effect, the company said. Patients who pass out should stop taking the medication and consult their doctor.
