Ismail Sabri probe now at 20%

PUTRAJAYA: Although Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has been called in for questioning nine times over the last two and a half months, investigations into corruption allegations against him have only reached 15% to 20%.
The former prime minister is expected to be called in again – for a 10th session – in two weeks, says Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki.
'He (Ismail Sabri) has been asked to prepare several documents. The probe is ongoing and, as I mentioned earlier, it concerns his asset declaration.
'Such investigations generally require time as the individual served with a notice has to explain the source of their assets, among others, and satisfy us as the issuing agency,' he told reporters after attending the South-East Asia Anti-Corruption Conference 2025: Recalling Jakarta Statement here yesterday.
Azam said it was essential to verify whether the declared assets were accurate, Bernama reported.
'If the declaration is found to be false or insufficient, further action can be taken,' he said.
The Bera MP is being investigated over alleged corruption and money laundering involving expenditure and procurement of funds for the promotion and publicity of the Keluarga Malaysia programme during his premiership from August 2021 to November 2022.
On March 3, Azam said Ismail Sabri was a suspect after the MACC discovered about RM170mil in cash in various currencies, along with 16kg of gold bars in a safe house during a raid.
On another corruption scandal, involving several Sabah state assemblymen linked to mineral mining licensing, Azam said investigations are expected to be completed in a week.
He said forensic reports had been obtained on 10 viral video recordings – including one that was released only yesterday.
'I expect it (the analysis results) to be ready in about a week. I've asked for updates; I don't want this matter to be delayed,' he said.
'Everyone is asking why it's taking so long. But we have to understand, this involves 10 videos, not just one. So we need to examine them very carefully.
Recently, several video recordings allegedly showing conversations involving bribery between certain individuals and several Sabah lawmakers related to mineral licensing in the state went viral.
Meanwhile, the whistleblower in the matter submitted nearly 300 pages of fresh evidence to the MACC yesterday.
His lawyer, Mahajoth Singh, said it included the new video, witness names, WhatsApp conversations, call logs, documents and a mobile phone containing original chat records.

Town planning officer claims trial to RM19,100 false claims charge
KOTA KINABALU: A town planning officer has claimed trial at the Special Corruption Court here on Wednesday (June 11) to a charge of submitting a false claim amounting to RM19,100. Nazri Hamburg, 46, an officer with the Sabah Town and Country Planning Department, pleaded not guilty when the charge under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 was read before Judge Jason Juga. According to the charge, Nazri is accused of knowingly submitting a false document, a claim form dated June 12, 2017, to a finance administrative assistant in his department. The claim allegedly included a bill, No. 171021 dated May 12, 2017, for the delivery of a car and a pick-up truck, along with a labour charge for moving goods, totalling RM19,100. Investigators claimed that no such transportation or services were rendered. If convicted, Nazri faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a fine of not less than five times the value of the false claim or RM10,000, whichever is higher, under Section 24(2) of the same Act. Deputy Public Prosecutor Dzulkarnain Rousan Hasbi prosecuted, while Nazri was represented by Hannan Razaini of Messrs M.S. Shah & Associates. The court allowed bail at RM10,000 with one surety. Nazri was also ordered to report to the MACC office every two months pending the outcome of the case. Mention has been fixed for July 10, 2025.

Border wall proposed to plug smuggling loopholes in Kelantan
KOTA BARU: A permanent wall or fence along the Kelantan–Thailand border is viewed as the most effective solution to combat persistent smuggling activities in the state, said Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat. He said the 45-kilometre border stretch remains too exposed, making comprehensive enforcement challenging. "For that entire stretch, we have only eight control posts. Naturally, many gaps continue to be exploited by smugglers," he said. "In my opinion, only the construction of a complete border wall can effectively address this issue," he told reporters at a press conference held in conjunction with the Kelantan Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department's (NCID) 2025 Case Disposal event at the state police headquarters here today. Yusoff added that the proposal to construct the wall had been submitted to the relevant authorities some time ago. He also noted a shift in drug trafficking trends in Kelantan, with smugglers now preferring to bring in smaller quantities compared to the large consignments seen previously. This change, he said, followed tighter enforcement and restrictions on cross-border movement through illegal entry points along Sungai Golok. "Previously, we made large seizures. Now, traffickers are more cautious and smuggle in smaller amounts. Still, yaba pills remain the most in-demand drug in the state," he said. – BERNAMA

Hailing from Debak, Gilberd, who is Bukit Aman Logistics and Technology Department (JLog) Deputy Director Technical/Operations, takes over from Datuk Seri Sahabudin Abd Manan, who retired after 37 years of service in the force. The handing-over-of-duty ceremony was held at the Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Hasim Hall, Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre (Pulapol) today and was witnessed by Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay. Ayob Khan, in his speech, described Sahabudin, who led JLog with commitment and integrity for almost four years since July 5, 2021, as a highly credible person.
