KUALA LUMPUR : The High Court today postponed to May 23 the sentencing of a man who previously pleaded guilty to murdering his parents at Kampung Sungai Penchala in 2023.
Justice K Muniandy fixed the new date to allow the prosecution time to tender as evidence additional items used by the accused, Afendi Muhammad Agus @ Muhamed Ali Omar, 44, during the incident.
Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Izalina Abdullah produced a small wooden table with a round top allegedly used by Afendi to hit his parents, Muhammad Agus @ Muhamed Ali Omar, 82, and Darlisma Njatu Saleh, 72.
However, several other exhibits, including a knife, blade and clothes worn by the accused during the incident, were not brought to court today, prompting the adjournment of proceedings
Afendi, unemployed, was charged in the magistrates' court on Dec 15, 2023 with murdering his parents at the house between 7.10pm and 7.20pm on Dec 9.
The charges were framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code which provides for the death penalty, or 30 to 40 years' jail, and no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
It was reported that the bodies of the couple were found in the living room of their home with several stab wounds.
The case was then transferred to the High Court, where Afendi pleaded guilty to the double murder on Sept 6 last year.
A psychiatric medical report from Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Ipoh, Perak, confirmed that Afendi was sane at the time the offences were committed.
In proceedings today, Afendi maintained his plea after the charges were read to him.
He was represented by lawyer Ruzaini Zulkifli.

Woman loses over RM600,000 in bogus share investment scam, Pahang police investigate
KUANTAN, June 9 — A research officer lost more than RM600,000 after falling victim to a bogus share investment scheme. Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the 57-year-old woman was first lured into the scheme after being added to a WhatsApp group on March 21. She made an initial investment of RM14,000 and managed to withdraw a RM1,000 return, which gave her the confidence to continue investing. 'Between April 23 and June 4, she made 28 transactions amounting to over RM600,000 to three different bank accounts using her savings,' he said in a statement today. The victim grew suspicious when she attempted to withdraw RM50,000, only to be told she needed to pay RM200,000 in service charges. Realising she had been scammed, she lodged a police report at the Rompin police headquarters yesterday. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — Bernama
