Man, 53, jailed for trying to smuggle three kilograms of cocaine into Jersey under a car seat
A Bromley man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison by Jersey's Royal Court after attempting to import £750,000 worth of cocaine into the island.
David Paul Rhodes, 53, hid three kilograms of the Class A drug in six vacuum-sealed packages in his friend's car and caught a ferry from Portsmouth to Jersey in February 2025.
Rhodes' long-term friend had allowed him to borrow the vehicle for his trip.
When Rhodes was stopped and questioned by customs officers, he said he was visiting Jersey for a few days and had planned to come with his girlfriend, but she chose not to travel after they had argued on Valentine's Day.
However, with the help of a drug detector dog, the packages were discovered under a rear seat in the car.
Rhodes initially denied knowing what the packages were and declined to comment, but later pleaded guilty to the offence.
Paul Le Monnier, Senior Manager at Jersey Customs and Immigration Service, says: "This was a significant seizure of cocaine destined for our streets and undoubtedly the seizure of this quantity of drugs has hurt the pockets of those concerned in organising the importation."

King of the Hill voice actor shot dead outside Texas home
A voice actor best known for his work on animated series King of the Hill has died at the age of 59 after being shot outside his home in Texas. Jonathan Joss, who portrayed John Redcorn on the series and also appeared in Parks and Recreation as Chief Ken Hotate, was fatally shot in south San Antonio around 7pm on Sunday. Police arrived at the scene and performed life saving measures on the 59-year-old, who was discovered wounded. Joss was pronounced dead by emergency medical services (EMS) crews at the scene. 'The officers attempted life saving measures until EMS arrived. EMS pronounced the victim deceased,' San Antonio police said in a statement. Joss' death was confirmed by his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales. The couple had married earlier this year on Valentine's Day. Mr Kern de Gonzales claimed in a social media post that a man 'yelled homophobic slurs' at the couple before 'raising a gun from his lap and firing'. A man has since been arrested on suspicion of murder. San Antonio police said in a social media post on Monday that 'despite online claims' of his death being a hate crime, there is 'no evidence that Mr Joss's murder was related to his sexual orientation'. Officers added: 'Should any new evidence come to light, the suspect will be charged accordingly.' King of the Hill actor Jonathan Joss shot dead by neighbour
Police say they have no evidence of the motive behind the shooting having been homophobia after Joss, 59, was shot dead. Jonathan Joss, who starred in King of The Hill, has been shot dead by a neighbour in what the actor's husband has called a ' homophobic hate crime '. The 59-year-old provided the voice of John Redcorn on the long-running TV animation King of the Hill, and played Chief Ken Hotate in sitcom Parks and Recreation. His husband Tristan Kern de Gonzales said a man "started yelling violent homophobic slurs" then opened fire when they were visiting their former home in Texas, which was destroyed in a fire in January. Police say they have no evidence of the motive behind the shooting. A police spokesperson said: "Despite online claims of this being a hate crime, currently the investigation has found no evidence to indicate that the Mr Joss's murder was related to his sexual orientation." The shooting happened when the couple went back to the site of their old house, which "was burned down after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told us they would set it on fire", Gonzales wrote on Facebook. "When we returned to the site to check our mail we discovered the skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view. 'This caused both of us severe emotional distress. We began yelling and crying in response to the pain of what we saw," he wrote. "While we were doing this a man approached us. He started yelling violent homophobic slurs at us. He then raised a gun from his lap and fired. "Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life." Gonzales added that Joss "gave me more love in our time together than most people ever get", and that they were in the process of looking for a trailer after getting married on Valentine's Day. "I was with him when he passed. I told him how much he was loved." Officers found Joss lying near a road in San Antonio after being called to a report of a shooting. The suspect, Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. San Antonio Police Department's statement added: "Investigators handle these allegations very seriously and have thoroughly reviewed all available information. "Should any new evidence come to light, the suspect will be charged accordingly." Parks and Recreation actor Nick Offerman paid tribute to Joss. He told People: "The cast has been texting together about it all day and we're just heartbroken. Jonathan was such a sweet guy and we loved having him as our Chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy." King of the Hill's creators Mike Judge, Greg Daniels and Saladin Patterson said in a statement: "Jonathan Joss brought King of the Hill's John Redcorn to life for over a dozen seasons, including in the upcoming revival. "His voice will be missed at King of the Hill, and we extend our deepest condolences to Jonathan's friends and family." King of the Hill, set in Texas, is about the life of propane salesman Hank Hill and his family and friends. It was created in 1997 by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels and ran for more than 250 episodes. It is now being revived, and the new season will be available on Hulu from August 4.
