Bakersfield man pleads guilty to federal drug trafficking charges
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A Bakersfield man pleaded guilty in federal court to possessing various drugs — including fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine, psilocybin and marijuana — for distribution, according to the United States Department of Justice.
On Aug. 10, 2023, officers executed a federal search warrant at a home in Bakersfield that served as a stash house, according to the U.S. Department of Justice in a release.
The home was being used as a shop to sell psychedelic drugs — psilocybin mushrooms — and marijuana.

Officers found Ramon Maldonado Jr., 33, of Bakersfield, in bed in one of the bedrooms. They seized several totes, bags and jars of psilocybin mushrooms, psilocybin and marijuana wax and edibles, marijuana, heroin and fentanyl in two rooms and the kitchen of the residence, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
The search also led to the discovery of a Ruger .22-caliber rifle with an inserted magazine, five semi-automatic pistol magazines and a 'brick' of fentanyl with a Louis Vuitton imprint, the release said.
In total, officers seized 5.5 pounds of fentanyl, 25.9 pounds of psilocybin, 23.4 pounds of marijuana, 20 ounces of heroin and 1.15 ounces of methamphetamine, according to the release.

The Kern County Probation Office Gang Unit and Bakersfield Police Department assisted the investigation led by the Drug Enforcement Administration, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The case was investigated under the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces.
Sentencing is set for Aug. 4. Maldonado faces a minimum penalty of 10 years in prison and a maximum penalty of life in prison, along with a $10 million fine, the U.S. Department of Justice said.

Thieves are targeting these luxury truck models in Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Bakersfield is near the top of the list when it comes to car thefts in the country, and now police are sounding the alarm that luxury pickup trucks are getting ripped off. An undercover BPD officer says thieves are using auto diagnostic tools to start the trucks and disconnect OnStar systems so the trucks can't be tracked. They're even punching through the glass to open the door to bypass the push button start. Four people arrested on suspicion of stealing multiple Arvin Public Works trucks: Arvin PD 'The police department said that they're an organized ring and they're coming to Kern County to steal trucks to fill their orders,' Chief Operating Officer John Pitre with the Motor City Auto Center said. Over the last two months, there's been a surge of high-end truck thefts targeting 2018 and 2023 GMC Sierra half-ton and three-quarter ton pickups with the AT4 or Denali trims. 'Exotic suspension systems, wheels and tires, big brakes, high-power engines, leather interiors. I don't really think they're going after these trucks for a particular feature. 'We have a way to catalog those vehicles in such a way that if they are stolen, we can recover them,' he said. 'If you put an aftermarket handle that doesn't have a key cylinder on it, that's worked for me,' he said. California led the country in total vehicle thefts per capita last year. Lock your vehicle and park it in the garage, behind a secure fence or box it in. Add a GPS tracker so authorities can find your vehicle faster if it gets stolen. Rep. Vince Fong introduces SKIM Act to combat EBT fraud
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — For months, KGET has followed the EBT fraud crisis in Kern County. What started out as calls to our newsroom led to the revelation of dozens of victims and thousands of dollars in benefits stolen. The investigation shed light on millions of stolen dollars and a sophisticated Romanian crime ring operating across the county. After countless attempts of asking elected officials for answers, change may be coming from Capitol Hill. Skimming Scheme: The Romanian crime ring stealing EBT benefits in Kern County On Friday, Rep. Vince Fong (R-Bakersfield) introduced the 'Stopping Klepto-card and Identity Misuse Act' — or SKIM Act. This legislative effort is specifically designed to crack down EBT theft, that is Electronic Benefit Transfer, known as CalFresh and CalWorks in California. Rep. David Valadao (R-Hanford) is a co-sponsor of the bill. Through 17 News' investigation, we uncovered that the California Department of Social Services has lost more than $439 million in EBT benefits since 2021. In the last seven months, more than $2 million in Kern County taxpayer money has been stolen. Ex-Arvin teacher accused of sex with underage student set for hearing next week The SKIM Act directs the U.S. Attorney to coordinate federal, state, and local efforts to fight EBT fraud. It also asks sentencing guidelines to be much harder on EBT thieves. The bill also asks the Attorney General and the Secretary of Homeland Security to submit a report to Congress on their efforts to prevent, investigate, prosecute, and sentence convicted EBT thieves.
