F-16 Is Getting Massive Anti-Ship Missile Upgrade
The U.S. Navy is set to help integrate the AGM-158C Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM) onto the F-16 Viper fighter, giving those jets a huge enhancement in anti-ship capability. This comes amid a larger U.S. push to expand the total number of platforms that can launch the stealthy LRASMs with a particular eye on helping to prepare for a potential major conflict in the Pacific.
Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) announced its intention 'to enter into sole source negotiations and subsequently award a Cost-Plus Fixed Fee (CPFF) Delivery Order (DO) to Lockheed Martin Corporation-Missiles Fire Control (LMMFC)' in a contracting notice posted online yesterday. 'The anticipated DO is for required integration and test support of the AGM-158C-1 missile on the F-16 aircraft platform.'
The AGM-158C-1 is the main version of the LRASM in production now. A C-3 subvariant with roughly double the maximum range (approximately 600 miles versus 200-300 miles, based on publicly available information) and other improvements is now in development.
LRASM is derived from the AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM) family. JASSM has already been integrated onto the F-16C/D.
For U.S. Air Force F-16s, LRASM could be a particularly significant boon. The Viper does have an anti-ship cruise missile capability in the form of variants of the AGM-84 Harpoon, but it is unclear if any Air Force F-16 units have those weapons available and/or if they actively train to employ them. The Air Force is also in the process of acquiring examples of the Joint Strike Missile (JSM), a newer cruise missile with anti-ship and land attack capability, but only to arm its F-35A Joint Strike Fighters, at least so far.
More importantly, the AGM-158C is also a stealthy design, which the Harpoon is not, and has an array of other advanced features, including highly autonomous route-planning capability supported by an onboard electronic support measures (ESM) suite. As such, LRASM can automatically alter its course in response to the sudden appearance of threats, as well as better find its target via its radio-frequency emissions. In the terminal phase of flight, the missile switches over to a passive imaging infrared sensor that does not pump out radio-frequency emissions for the enemy to detect and is immune to radio-frequency jamming, unlike Harpoon's active radar seeker. The imaging infrared seeker visually differentiates targets based on information in an onboard database, which allows it to zero in on a ship's most vulnerable spot, as well.
LRASMs can receive additional threat updates and other targeting data from offboard sources while in flight via a two-way datalink, which also allows the missiles to work cooperatively for more coordinated strikes.
Interestingly, NAVAIR's notice about integrating LRASM on F-16 also follows an Air Force announcement last month about a test of the communications gateway system designed to help speed up the integration of new weapons onto the Viper. The 53rd Test and Evaluation Group's Detachment 3 used a Navy XATM-84N-1, an inert subvariant of the AGM-48N Harpoon Block II+ missile, to demonstrate the gateway's capabilities. The Harpoon Block II+ is currently in service with the Navy, but not the Air Force.
'The gateway functioned as a translator, enabling the F-16 to recognize the Harpoon and the Harpoon to receive signals from the F-16,' according to an Air Force release. 'Leveraging the gateway approach, the 53rd TEG team expedited the integration process, significantly reducing the timeline and demonstrating a faster, more efficient method of adding new weapons capabilities to the aircraft.'
'Our primary objective was to demonstrate that rapid weapons integration on U.S. Air Force platforms can be achieved efficiently by modifying middleware, without necessitating extensive updates to the aircraft itself,' an unnamed project manager said in an accompanying statement. 'This test paves the way for future projects across various platforms and weapons systems, offering leaders expanded options for operational and contingency planning.'
Though AGM-158C was not explicitly mentioned in this context, the new communications gateway might help speed up the integration of LRASM onto the F-16.
As noted, there has already been a clear push to expand the number of available AGM-158C launch platforms across the U.S. military. Currently, Navy F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and Air Force B-1 bombers are the only aircraft clear to employ the missile. However, work is underway now to add LRASM to the arsenals of the P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol plane and the B and C variants, at least, of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. In January, NAVAIR put out another contracting notice about plans to integrate the stealthy anti-ship cruise missiles onto Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle and F-15EX Eagle II combat jets.
The U.S. military is interested broadly in expanding its air-launched anti-ship capabilities and capacity, particularly as part of efforts to prepare for a potential high-end fight against China in the Pacific. Just last week, the Air Force awarded Lockheed Martin a modification to an existing contract, valued at nearly $122.6 million, to help step up production of both LRASMs and JASSMs.
There are broader concerns about the adequacy of U.S. stockpiles of standoff munitions, as well as the ability to replenish them during a sustained conflict, especially a large-scale one against an opponent like China. The price point of weapons like the LRASM, which has a unit cost of around $3 million, as well as the long lead times required to source the complex components that go into them, has also been driving interest in lower-cost options, including for anti-ship use.
For LRASM, integrating the missile onto the F-16, variants of which are in widespread service globally, and with a still-growing number of total operators, could also open up new export opportunities.
Though when exactly F-16s might start flying operationally with LRASM is unknown, the Viper's anti-ship capabilities are now set to get a significant boost.

Diabetes Canada stresses it doesn't endorse medical products after ads suggest otherwise
Diabetes Canada says it's received a surge in reports from people who've seen ads for or bought products that use the charity's logos without authorization. Since January, Diabetes Canada says it's had over 300 calls to its 1-800 line and emails from people reporting misleading advertisements for diabetes products that have the charity's logo. Diabetes Canada isn't the only organization being affected. Products ranging from purported medications and supplements to devices that claim to be blood glucose monitors are also carrying the logos of Obesity Canada and Health Canada. Some of the groups say they want the ads taken down and social media companies are doing that, but new ads keep appearing. A class of injectable medications known as GLP-1 agonists, sold in Canada under the brand name Ozempic and Wegovy are approved to treat Type 2 diabetes and obesity, respectively. These drugs need to be administered by doctors and distributed by pharmacists. They are also not endorsed by Diabetes Canada, Obesity Canada or Health Canada. Some of the misleading ads are for products that doctors say are not effective but mimic the names of these more recognizable medications. These include GLP-1 oral drops, said Laura Syron, the president and CEO of Diabetes Canada. "They're certainly not endorsed by us," Syron said on Thursday. "We do not endorse any medical health product." Doctors say it's important for people who live with diabetes to get accurate blood sugar readings. That's why Syron recommends anyone considering changing their medication, trying a new treatment or getting a new monitoring device talk to their health-care provider first. The organization said some ads falsely claim the organization will also offer patients a subsidy. Use of logo created sense of trust Joel Snitman, 81, of Thornhill, Ont., has Type 2 diabetes and checks his blood sugar levels at least once a week. Snitman said he saw a Facebook ad for a product with a photo identifying it as a glucose monitor. He said he trusted it because the ad showed Diabetes Canada's logo. "This gadget offered to do it without sticking a needle in your finger," Snitman recalled. "I thought I would give it a shot." The product turned out to be an oximeter, a device used to measure blood oxygen levels, not blood sugar. Snitman contacted Diabetes Canada, saying he felt he got sucked in by seeing their logo on the ad. He said he wasn't able to find the name of the manufacturer or retailer beyond a series of consonants. He emailed the delivery company and asked them if they knew their client. The answer was no. Similarly, Syron said Diabetes Canada found it difficult to get in touch with anyone at the company. CBC News was also unable to contact the company. Concerns about delayed treatment Dr. Kaberi Dasgupta, a physician, scientist and professor of medicine at McGill University, says there are no drops or patches that would give a similar effect to GLP-1 medications, which need to be administered by doctors and distributed by pharmacists. "Those products, the GLP-1 patches and drops, they're just trying to … join the enthusiasm and kind of, I would say madness, surrounding these medications that certainly can enhance weight reduction and can improve blood sugar control in diabetes," Dasgupta said from Halifax. Her concern is that if someone with diabetes uses the drops or patches, it could delay or prevent them from receiving proper medical care. Talia Wiebe, director of marketing and communications at Obesity Canada, says the organization is aware of a company fraudulently using Obesity Canada's name, logo and an image of its founder, Dr. Arya Sharma, to promote an unregulated supplement called HHVB GLP-1 Moringa Slimming & Health Boost Drops. Obesity Canada tried to find the supplement maker without success. "We are working with our legal team to hopefully reach out to them and cease and desist and have these products taken down," Wiebe said. Diabetes Canada says it has reached out to various social media platforms where the ads using their logo have appeared and reported the issue to Health Canada. "All medical devices authorized for use in Canada are listed in the Medical Devices Active Licence Listing database," a spokesperson for Health Canada said. A search of Remifa or Briskix, the product and seller of Snitman's purchase, did not yield any results. Syron added another challenge is that when one ad disappears, another quickly pops up. A spokesperson for Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, said Friday that it has removed the ad from its platforms and is continuing to investigate. Meta says its policies prohibit content that "defrauds people by promoting false or misleading health claims, including those related to weight loss, and we remove this kind of content when we become aware of it." Meta also notes that the challenge spans platforms, industries and communities, which is why it works with law enforcement, regulators and private industry to combat scams. "We continue to invest resources and further improve our enforcement on this kind of content," the spokesperson said. Health Canada did not respond to CBC News regarding the use of its name on some advertisements.

F-15E Armed With Drone Killing Laser-Guided Rockets Appears In Middle East
We now have a picture showing a U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle down-range in the Middle East with an air-to-air loadout that includes six seven-shot 70mm rocket pods, as well as four AIM-9X and four AIM-120 missiles. This comes a week after TWZ was the first to report on testing of the laser-guided 70mm Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II (APKWS II) rockets as a new armament option for the F-15E. As we noted at that time, the exact loadout we're now seeing on a deployed Strike Eagle turns the jet into a counter-drone and cruise missile 'weapons truck' with a whopping 50 engagement opportunities, not counting the internal gun. This had already underscored the magazine depth benefits of APKWS II. A typical air-to-air for the Viper consists of six air-to-air missiles. Just having a pair of rocket pods on one pylon effectively triples the number of anti-air engagement opportunities per sortie. The F-15E with six seven-shot rocket pods, along with eight air-to-air missiles, goes far beyond that capacity.' … 'Together with aerial refueling support, an F-15E armed with APKWS II rockets and traditional air-to-air missiles could provide a far more persistent counter-air screen with a huge magazine depth against drones and some cruise missile types. This kind of general scenario is what Air Force Strike Eagle crews found themselves in on multiple occasions while defending Israel from Iranian attacks last year, during which, running out of missiles became the limiting factor.' The F-15E also has the advantage of being a two-seat aircraft, which allows the pilot in front to focus on flying the plane while the back-seater engages targets in the air or on the ground and performs other tasks. It is worth mentioning that Muwaffaq Salti was a major staging point for the aforementioned F-15E sorties in the defense of Israel last year. Stunning accounts of those operations have since emerged. This includes at least one instance in which a Strike Eagle crew switched to the jet's 20mm M61 Vulcan cannon after running out of missiles, but was unable to shoot down anything with the gun. It would make sense that an APKWS II capability for the F-15E, particularly for use in the air-to-air role, would have been rushed into service after those experiences, and subsequently fielded to Strike Eagle units deployed in Jordan. APKWS II is limited in the air-to-air role to engaging non-reactionary, low-performance targets that fly along relatively steady courses like one-way-attack drones and subsonic cruise missiles. Currently, targets have to be manually designated, or 'lazed,' throughout the entire course of the engagement, as well. APKWS II's prime contractor, BAE Systems, is now working on a dual-mode guidance package that incorporates an infrared seeker that is designed to offer a pseudo-fire-and-forget capability to make it easier to move on from engaging on target to the next, as you can read more about here. At the same time, the aforementioned magazine depth, together with the lower unit cost of an APKWS II rocket compared to traditional air-to-air missiles, offers clear benefits. The latest variants of the AIM-120 cost around $1 million apiece, while current-generation AIM-9Xs each have a price tag around $450,000. The most expensive part of an APKWS II rocket is the guidance section, which costs between $15,000 and $20,000, with the rocket motor and warhead adding a few thousand dollars more to the total price point. As shown by the F-15E in the newly released picture, air-to-air loadouts incorporating APKWS II can also still include air-to-air missiles for prosecuting more demanding threats. It remains likely that APKWS II will be integrated onto further fixed-wing aircraft in the future for use in the air-to-air role, such as the U.S. Navy's F/A-18E/F Super Hornets.
