June execution is scheduled for a Florida man convicted of raping and killing a woman
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A man convicted of raping and killing a woman near a central Florida bar has been scheduled for execution in Florida under a death warrant signed Friday by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, the seventh this year.
Thomas Lee Gudinas, 51, is set to die by lethal injection June 24 at Florida State Prison near the city of Starke.
Gudinas was convicted in 1995 and sentenced to death for the murder of Michelle McGrath.
McGrath was last seen at a bar called Barbarella's around closing time in May 1994. Her body was found in an alley next to a nearby school the next morning with evidence of serious trauma and sexual assault.
Gudinas had been at the same bar with friends the night before, but they all later testified that they had left without him. A school employee who found McGrath's body later identified Gudinas as a man who was fleeing the area shortly before the body was discovered. Another woman also identified Gudinas as the person who chased her to her car the previous night and threatened to assault her.
Five other executions have taken place in Florida this year, with a sixth scheduled for June 10, all by lethal injection.

Civilian active shooter trainings held across North Texas this weekend
As active shooter situations continue in Texas and the country, North Texas law enforcement said they want the public to be prepared. They plan to hold dozens of what they call "Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events" training sessions on Saturday, June 28. It's a partnership between the North Texas Crime Commission and 30 other local agencies. Grand Prairie police said the classes are a chance for attendees to get the same training as law enforcement on active shooter situations. Man executed for raping, killing Florida woman outside a bar
A man convicted of raping and killing a woman near a central Florida bar was executed Tuesday evening. Thomas Lee Gudinas, 51, received a lethal injection at Florida State Prison near Starke, following decades on death row for the 1994 killing of Michelle McGrath. His execution proceeded as scheduled after last-day appeals were denied. Gudinas became the seventh person executed in Florida this year, with an eighth execution scheduled for next month. The state executed six people in 2023, compared to only one the year before. So far, 23 people have been executed in the U.S. in 2025. Scheduled executions are on pace to make this the busiest year for capital punishment since 2015. Florida leads the nation in executions this year, followed by Texas and South Carolina with four each. Alabama has carried out three, while Oklahoma has executed two. Arizona, Indiana, Louisiana, and Tennessee have each executed one person. Mississippi is scheduled to carry out its first execution since 2022 on Wednesday. Gudinas' lawyers had argued that he should be spared due to what they described as lifelong mental illness, but the Florida Supreme Court rejected that claim last week, ruling that protections for intellectually disabled individuals do not extend to those with other mental or psychological conditions. McGrath was last seen leaving Barbarella's, a downtown Orlando nightclub, shortly before 3 a.m. on May 24, 1994. Her body was found several hours later in an alley near a nearby school, showing signs of severe trauma and sexual assault. Witnesses placed Gudinas at the scene, and another woman testified that he had chased and threatened her earlier that same night. He was convicted and sentenced to death in 1995. His attorneys also filed a federal appeal arguing that Florida's system of allowing the governor sole discretion to issue death warrants violates due process and results in an arbitrary system. The U.S. Supreme Court had not ruled on the issue before the execution took place.

On July 13, Tyra Rogers didn't need home health care. She was a thriving, healthy mother, but everything changed when she was giving her mom a ride home from a bar on the East side of St. Paul. Her daughter was also in the back seat. "The truck pulls up on the side of me and they start shooting," Rogers said. "I looked down and my sweater was smoking. My sweater was smoking, 'cause of how hot the bullet was." A bullet hole almost struck her daughter's car seat. "I asked, is my daughter okay, and the officer reached my arm back and I felt her, and I looked back. She was playing an officer in the ambulance with stickers," said Rogers. Rogers was shot seven times in her legs, back and gut. "My stomach got split open, I gotmaybe 20-something staples going down my whole stomach," Rogers says. She experiences soreness and aching pain, but Rogers says that's not what hurts most. She feels she is missing out on time with her daughter. "I like to bring her places and do stuff with her and now I can't 'cause I can't move around," she said. She's hoping now St. Paul police can close in on the case. Officers say they're still investigating. "I want the people who did this to know what they did, because it's really senseless," Rogers says. "There's too many shootings with women involved nowadays. They are hitting people who aren't their targets." Friends have set up an online fundraiser for Rogers since she can't work while she recovers. St. Paul police are asking anyone with information to give them a call. Anyone with information is encouraged to call investigators at 651-266-5858. Callers can remain anonymous.
