‘Lost to Marathi manoos': Uddhav exults govt's rollback on 3-language policy; says it's not ‘wisdom that came late'

Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray (File Photo) NEW DELHI: Shiv Sena (UBT) boss Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday claimed that the attempt made by the Mahayuti government to "impose Hindi" on Marathi manoos has been defeated after it withdrew the two orders on the implementation of the three-language policy, in Classes 1 to 5 in state schools. While addressing a press conference, Uddhav said that Devendra Fadnavis government attempted to break the unity of the Marathi manoos and create a divide between Marathis and non-Marathis. "The decision to impose Hindi under the guise of a three-language policy from Class 1 has finally been withdrawn. The government has cancelled the two GRs (Government Resolutions) related to this. This cannot be called wisdom that came late, because this imposition was withdrawn solely due to the strong resistance from the Marathi people. Why the government was so insistent on pushing Hindi and from where exactly this pressure was coming still remains a mystery," Uddhav said. "But the attempt to enforce the learning of Hindi by students in Maharashtra through the three-language formula has finally been defeated, and for that, congratulations to all the people of Maharashtra. The government lost to the power of Marathi manoos. The government did not realise Marathi manoos will unite in this manner. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Livguard Lithium-X: The Future of Power Backup Livguard Shop Now Undo Let this passionate resolve grow stronger, and let the Marathi language become a language of knowledge and global discourse — that is the real aspiration," he added. This comes moments after announced the formation of a committee under educationist Dr Narendra Jadhav to suggest the way forward and implementation of the language policy. The panel has sought three months to study the issue and prepare a report. "The state cabinet has decided to withdraw the Government Resolutions (GR) issued in April and June regarding the implementation of the three-language policy from class one. A committee headed by Dr Narendra Jadhav will be formed to recommend implementation (of the three-language formula)," Fadnavis said. He said the government will take a fresh decision based on the report of Dr Jadhav, a former member of the Planning Commission and ex-Vice Chancellor. The Fadnavis government had issued a GR on April 16, making Hindi a compulsory third language for students in classes 1 to 5 studying in English and Marathi medium schools. Amid backlash, the government issued an amended GR on June 17 making Hindi an optional language. Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS had announced a joint march on July 5 to oppose the "imposition" of the Hindi language. The march was cancelled after the government withdrew the GRs.

Will throw Waqf Act into dustbin if elected: Tejashwi

1 2 Patna: Opposition parties and Muslim community leaders on Sunday mounted a blistering attack on the Centre and Bihar govt over the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, accusing them of attempting to seize minority-owned properties and undermine constitutional rights. Asserting that the law would not be allowed to take effect in Bihar, RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav said a future Mahagathbandhan govt would "throw the law into the dustbin". The criticism came during the 'Waqf Bachao-Dastoor Bachao' (Save Waqf–Save Constitution) rally organised by Imarat-e-Sharia at Gandhi Maidan in Patna, which witnessed a large turnout from across Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. The amended law, already passed by both Houses of Parliament and now under challenge in the Supreme Court, has emerged as a major election-year flashpoint. With the state heading into assembly polls, opposition leaders accused the NDA of using the Waqf law and the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to marginalise Muslims, Dalits and backward communities. They alleged that the law was part of a larger agenda to suppress minority rights. Tejashwi said, "The country does not belong to anyone's father (kisi ke baap ka nahin), it belongs to all of us. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Adidas Three Shorts With 60% Discount, Limited Stock Available Original Adidas Shop Now Undo We will not allow the implementation of the new law in Bihar at any cost. The ruling NDA in Bihar is on its way out and the new Mahagathbandhan govt will throw the new law into the dustbin." Echoing the sentiment, Samajwadi Party MP Zia Ur Rahman Barq said, "This is a war for the entire Muslim community against the new Waqf law and we will not stop till we win." The rally saw participation from several senior opposition figures, including Purnia MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, former Bihar Congress president Akhilesh Prasad Singh, Congress leader and former JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and Bihar AIMIM chief Akhtarul Iman. Each speaker criticised the Act and appealed for collective resistance. Congress leader and former foreign minister Salman Khurshid warned that the battle was not just about property rights. "Not only the Waqf, but the Constitution itself must be saved to protect communal harmony and constitutional rights," he said. Although the rally reflected strong support for the opposition's INDIA bloc, some attendees said they were also considering backing Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party in the upcoming elections. Speaking in Siwan, Kishor reiterated his opposition to the Waqf law and extended best wishes to the rally organisers.

‘We need clarity': UAE fishermen demand clear seasonal bans aligned with neighbouring Gulf states

Emirati fishermen demand clearer fishing ban dates, urging the season to start in early October like neighbouring Gulf states to better plan and protect livelihoods (Representative image) Emirati fishermen are voicing mounting frustration over seasonal fishing bans that they say lack transparency and coordination with neighboring Gulf countries. These concerns were raised in a recent session of the Federal National Council (FNC), where fishermen called on the UAE's Ministry of Climate Change and Environment to better align the country's fishing calendar with that of the wider Gulf region to help sustain both their livelihoods and the nation's local fish supply. FNC member Mohammed Al Kashf questioned the Ministry about the ongoing ban on certain types of fishing—particularly the use of traditional wire traps, known locally as hiyal. According to Al Kashf, fishermen were notified of the bans via SMS messages that failed to provide clear timelines or durations. 'This lack of clarity prevents fishermen from benefitting during the most suitable times of the year,' Al Kashf told the Council. He urged the Ministry to consider 'adjustments that support both fish stock sustainability and the economic wellbeing of Emirati fishermen.' Ministry Responds: Ban Dates Based on Scientific Studies Responding to these concerns, Minister of Climate Change and Environment Amna Al Dahak clarified that the fishing ban period has remained unchanged since 2021, running annually from November 1 to May 13. She said the timeline is informed by ministerial decisions based on scientific research. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like local network access control Esseps Learn More Undo 'These periods are based on studies that aim to ensure the regeneration of fish stocks and protect marine life,' Al Dahak stated during the session. The Minister added that the ministry sends regular notifications to fishermen, including at the start and end of each season, and holds awareness workshops in coordination with the Fishermen's Cooperative Union. Four such workshops were organized this year alone to keep the community updated. 'We work closely with fishermen and regularly hold stakeholder meetings to address their challenges and align on goals,' Al Dahak said, emphasizing that preserving the fishing profession and ensuring its sustainability is a top priority for the ministry. She also noted that there is ongoing coordination with local authorities, as well as joint technical committees at the GCC level, to improve regional consistency in fishing policies. Fishermen Urge for Earlier Season Start, Regional Coordination While Al Kashf welcomed the Ministry's engagement with the fishing community, he said fishermen still face practical challenges, particularly when bans are imposed without prior notice or with reopening dates that remain uncertain. He emphasized that preparations for the fishing season, such as hiring crew members and securing gear and provisions, require both time and financial commitment. 'Veteran fishermen and sea-goers know the right times for the season to start, and the ministry is pushing efforts in the right direction,' Al Kashf acknowledged. 'But there is a clear call from fishermen to begin the season in early October instead, to match neighbouring countries.' The overarching request from the fishing community is clear: implement better communication, timely notifications, and a harmonized fishing calendar that aligns with other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Fishermen argue that such steps would not only make their work more viable but also help preserve fish stocks and the UAE's marine heritage.
