Blackhawks acquire Andre Burakovsky from Kraken for fellow forward Joe Veleno
CHICAGO — The Chicago Blackhawks acquired Andre Burakovsky from the Seattle Kraken on Saturday in exchange for fellow forward Joe Veleno.
Chicago also placed defenseman T.J. Brodie on unconditional waivers for purposes of buying out his contract.
Burakovsky, 30, had 10 goals and 27 assists in 79 games with Seattle last season. A Stanley Cup champion with Washington in 2018 and Colorado in 2022, he has 153 goals and 234 assists in 696 regular-season games over 11 NHL seasons.
The acquisition of Burakovsky gives Chicago some additional size and scoring, and the trade creates more flexibility for Seattle with the salary cap.
The 6-foot-3 Burakovsky was selected by Washington with the No. 23 pick in the 2013 draft. He signed a five-year, $27.5 million contract with Seattle in July 2022.
Veleno, 25, was traded from Detroit to Chicago in March. He finished with eight goals and nine assists in 74 games last season.
The 6-1 Veleno has 38 goals and 43 assists in 306 career regular-season games. He has a cap hit of $2.275 million for next season in the final year of his contract.
Brodie, 35, agreed to a two-year, $7.5 million contract with Chicago last summer. He had two goals and eight assists in 54 games last season.

Other than the 3-pointer, though, Reese didn't have a very productive afternoon in the 21-point loss. The Sky forward finished under her 11-point game average and well below the 11.7 rebounds she was posting per game before Saturday. Last season, Reese registered 13.6 points, 13.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game as a rookie. With the loss to the Mercury on Saturday, the Sky fell to 3-9, currently the third-worst record. Chicago has lost five of its last six games. Meanwhile, the Mercury are heading in the opposite direction. De La Cruz vomited on the field with two outs in the fourth inning of Cincinnati's extra-inning loss at the St. Louis Cardinals. He was checked on by a trainer, and two workers from the grounds crew cleaned up the area. Thornton pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for Seattle before departing in the eighth in a 10-7 loss at the Chicago Cubs. The 31-year-old right-hander had to be helped from the field. Mariners manager Dan Wilson said Thornton had 'a little bit of a heat-related illness.' 'It was a scary moment, for sure,' Wilson said. 'He battled hard. But just really glad that he's feeling a little bit better now and should be OK.' The gametime temperature for Reds at Cardinals was 92 degrees, and it was 94 for the first pitch of the Mariners' loss to the Cubs. Dexter Kelley moved from second base to home plate. Whitson was treated in the Mariners' dugout. 'He came in, same kind of thing. Just was not feeling well,' Wilson said. 'Threw up a few times in the dugout and then they came and took care of him from there. The heat was a real thing today, for sure.' Whitson was dealing with some dehydration, but a Major League Baseball spokesman said he was doing better Saturday night and had been cleared to work third base for the series finale. A Wrigley Field staffer had a heat-related medical issue right after Saturday's game, according to a spokesman for the Cubs. He was tended to by medical personnel and walked off the field on his own.
