Former India Spinner Backs Kuldeep In England: 'Should Be Surprise Match-Winner'

Venkatapathy Raju feels Kuldeep Yadav can be the star spinner for India against England.
Although Kuldeep Yadav has been an international cricketer for seven years, he has remarkably played only 13 Test matches. Factors such as a loss of form, a career-threatening knee injury, and the presence of other spinners have hampered his progress in securing a regular place in the Indian Test team.
Kuldeep's last Test appearance in England, at Lord's in 2018, proved disappointing. On a green, rain-affected pitch, he conceded 44 runs in nine overs and was dismissed for a pair, rendering India's selection gamble unsuccessful.
With Ravichandran Ashwin retired, India's spin-bowling unit requires a boost, and all eyes are on Kuldeep's potential performance when the series commences in Leeds on June 20. Former India left-arm spinner Venkatapathy Raju believes Kuldeep could be a surprise match-winner in England.
'Someone like Kuldeep is very difficult for a new batter to pick. I think he could be a surprise match-winner in this series. He has played quite a bit of international cricket, including white-ball formats."
'Now we have another experienced spinner in Ravindra Jadeja, but he has played for many years, and you can see that the zip is not the same anymore. Washington Sundar has only played a few Test matches in India and Australia, so we can't put too much pressure on him."
'As the tour progresses and the weather gets hotter, wickets will become drier. The contributions of Kuldeep and Jadeja will be crucial in the second half of the series to take wickets in the second innings," Raju was quoted as saying to IANS on Sunday.
The retirements of Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli, coupled with Mohammed Shami's absence due to fitness concerns, leave Jadeja as the sole representative of the original Test team. His presence, particularly with the bat, is more vital than ever, considering his experience in England and two World Test Championship finals.
'While discussing Kuldeep, we shouldn't forget Ravindra Jadeja – he is crucial. He is in his mid-30s, super fit, and can contribute with the bat. Unfortunately, Jadeja was often seen as a second-innings bowler on turning tracks."
'But he can control the game. He is at a stage in his career where his contributions are vital. The first couple of Tests will test him, despite his experience. It will be a tussle between him and Washington Sundar. He should use his experience to provide breakthroughs that will help the fast bowlers."
With dry weather and rising temperatures in England, conditions will favour Indian spinners. 'Initially, conditions will favour fast bowlers and batters for the first couple of days. But from the third or fourth day onwards, footmarks and dry patches will be crucial."
'In England, red soil offers good bounce. That's where Jadeja will play a crucial role. We have discussed Kuldeep, and how they combine could turn the tables for India," added Raju.
He concluded by explaining the adjustments Indian spinners must make with the Dukes ball in England. 'Dukes and SG balls are similar, but conditions in England are different, and ground dimensions vary."
'It depends on your length. It has to be slightly fuller because slow pitches can allow cut shots on a normal length. Pace and length matter, as well as patience. In England, you need good line and length, rhythm, and the ability to create pressure on batters."

VVS Laxman To Spearhead India's Preparations In Gautam Gambhir's Absence: Report

Last Updated: Gautam Gambhir returned to India earlier this week due to a medical emergency in his family. He is expected to rejoin the squad ahead of the first Test. Former India batter VVS Laxman is expected to oversee India's preparation for the first Test against England until the return of India's head coach, Gautam Gambhir, who is still in India, tending to his ill mother. The first Test of the five-match series between India and England is scheduled to take place at Headingley in Leeds from June 20 to 24. As per a leading media website, Laxman, who also leads the National Cricket Academy (NCA), is already in London ahead of India Under-19s' month-long tour of the United Kingdom. The junior side will play five youth ODIs starting June 27, with two youth Tests scheduled for Beckenham and Chelmsford in July. In Gambhir's absence, the former India great also guided a second-string India team in a T20 series in South Africa late last year and was also India's head coach for the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe in July 2024, where, for the first time in his career, Shubman Gill captained Team India. Gambhir returned to India on Friday India head coach Gautam Gambhir on Friday returned to the country after his mother, Seema Gambhir, had to be hospitalised due to a health emergency, a BCCI source told PTI. The source said Gambhir had to fly back to attend to his mother, who suffered a heart attack and is currently in the ICU in a New Delhi hospital. The Shubman Gill-led Indian Test squad is in the UK to play a five-match series against England starting June 20 in Leeds. 'Gautam's mother had a heart attack on Wednesday. He and his family left for India on Thursday, and they have reached Delhi," the BCCI source informed. In Gambhir's absence, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate is assuming the team's charge during the four-day intra-squad match between India and India A, which begins on Friday. He is having assistance from other coaching staff, such as bowling coach Morne Morkel and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. Gambhir is expected to return to England in a week's time if everything goes well at his home. 'His mother is showing signs of recovery, although she is still in the ICU. In all likelihood, he will be back in the UK before the start of the opening Test (starting June 20) if all goes well." First Published:

"Taught me to never give up": Yuvraj Singh pens emotional note on Father's Day

New Delhi [India], June 15 (ANI): On Father's Day, former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh shared a heartfelt and emotional note on Sunday to express his deep appreciation for his father, Yograj Singh. Sharing a heartfelt message on his Instagram story, Yuvraj highlighted the invaluable life lessons his father has instilled in him over the years. 'Happy Father's Day baapu! The one who taught me that the only finish line worth crossing is the one you reach by never giving up! Lots of love,' he wrote, tagging his father's official Instagram handle, @yograjofficial. A former cricketer himself, Yograj Singh is known for his strict discipline and relentless drive, qualities that evidently shaped Yuvraj's own fighting spirit, both on and off the field. Yuvraj represented India in 402 international games from 2000-2017, scoring 11,178 runs at an average of 35.05, 17 centuries, and 71 fifties. He was part of the Indian team that won the ICC Champions Trophy 2002 (joint-winners with Sri Lanka), the ICC T20 World Cup 2007, and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. He was also the first Indian player to hit six successive sixes in an over in international cricket, doing so during the 2007 T20 World Cup against England. His career-high was the 'Player of the Tournament' performance during the 2011 World Cup, scoring 362 runs in nine matches with a century and four half-centuries and picking up 15 wickets. (ANI)
