All-Ireland finals won't move to August in 2026

BBC News30-04-2025

GAA president Jarlath Burns has said the All-Ireland Football and Hurling finals will not move to August in 2026. Burns previously suggested the finals could move back to their traditional September slot, but has now said a decision on shifting the dates for the 2027 season will be made by his successor. Since 2022, the All-Ireland finals have been played in July. This year's hurling final will be played on 20 July with the football decider on 27 July. "This year it's out," Burns, whose presidency ends in 2027, told GAA+."Next year it's out as well. But it's going to be the next president who'll make that decision, whether or not we go into August. It's probably not going to be my decision."But I would be open to it, notwithstanding the health warning that comes with the whole area of starting the club championships."We were showing so little respect to the club player that there was literally a group set up called the Club Players Association and they had one word – fixtures."We solved that for them."Burns added that the staging of concerts in Croke Park must be taken into consideration. This year, Oasis will perform at the GAA's headquarters on 16 and 17 August."And I'm going to say the next thing without any apology – we also have concerts in this," said Burns. "Croke Park is now the major funding organ of the GAA – let's not forget that."This stadium is keeping our organisation financially viable."

Horse racing tips: Monday, June 16

On the eve of Royal Ascot there are five fixtures across the UK and Ireland, and our attention is focused on a decent evening card at Windsor, where our expert tipster's three picks include a NAP. Ron Wood's selections: Odds provided by William Hill and correct at the time of writing. Stars denote strength of selection (max 5). If you already have a William Hill account and are looking for a new bookmaker to use for this week's racing, check out more free bets from the best betting sites, reviewed by our experts. 6.00 Windsor – Class 5 Handicap (5f) BRETTON WOOD didn't live up to his exceptional pedigree last year – he's by Frankel out of Group 1 winner Pretty Pollyanna – and he was sold for 13,000gns by his previous connections in September. However, he shaped reasonably well when making his stable debut for Robert Cowell on his seasonal reappearance at Lingfield, showing plenty of speed and finishing third. If he builds on that – and there is a fair chance that he will – he has to be going well. Selection: Bretton Wood @ 11/4 with William Hill Go to site > 7.30 Windsor – Class 3 Handicap (6f) DURHAM CASTLE (NAP) won twice last year and this big, lightly raced sprinter has further improvement in him. Although finishing only in midfield at Haydock on his reappearance, he had an unfavourable track position from what turned out to be an unhelpful draw that day and he should do better now. Selection: Durham Castle @ 6/4 with William Hill 8.30 Windsor – Class 4 Handicap (1m) THYER (NB) came up a bit short when selected on these pages at Nottingham last time, but that wasn't a bad run and he appeals as worth sticking with. He had gone close behind a well-handicapped rival at Nottingham the time before and he won over course and distance last season. Rossa Ryan taking over in the saddle is a positive and the faster ground is in his favour as well.
