Egypt's pharmaceutical market hits EGP 309bn in 2024, marking 43% growth
Egypt's pharmaceutical market recorded EGP 309bn in sales in 2024, up from EGP 216bn in 2023—reflecting a 43% year-on-year increase, according to Ali Ghamrawy, Chairperson of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA).
The announcement came during the EDA's 15th Board of Directors meeting, attended by Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan Mohamed El-Khatib, and Presidential Health Advisor Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din, alongside other senior officials.
The meeting reviewed several strategic updates, including the latest activities of the Permanent Committee of the Egyptian Pharmacopeia and progress in digital transformation across the Authority. These digital initiatives aim to enhance service delivery efficiency and strengthen the institutional work environment.
A key highlight of the meeting was the EDA's continued success in gaining international accreditation. In December 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) awarded the Authority Maturity Level 3 status in the field of medicines—an achievement that follows its earlier Maturity Level 3 accreditation for vaccines in March 2022. EDA laboratories have also been accredited by both the WHO and the European Union, a milestone that positions them as globally recognized reference labs.
The Authority's growing international presence was further underscored by its contributions to regulatory capacity-building programs across the Arab and African regions. With WHO Maturity Level 3 recognition in both medicine and vaccine regulation, the EDA has assumed a leading role in supporting regulatory system development throughout Africa.
The African Union Development Agency – NEPAD (AUDA-NEPAD) has selected EDA's Continuing Professional Development Center as a Regional Centre of Regulatory Excellence (RCORE). Under this designation, the Authority has conducted 12 international training programs for countries including Libya, Yemen, Ghana, and Algeria.
Additionally, the meeting showcased progress in EDA's internship programs, including the pilot launch of a new Learning Management System (LMS) platform aimed at enhancing professional training and knowledge transfer.

Egypt officially launches 5G, marking a leap towards digital transformation
Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat, has officially announced the launch of 5G services from the Pyramids area. During the launch ceremony, the minister emphasized Egypt's commitment to adopting global technologies and keeping pace with the latest advancements, noting that it was among the first Arab nations to join the International Telecommunication Union. Talaat highlighted the pivotal role of the communications sector as a bridge for connection and a fundamental pillar for life, work, and development, asserting that technology has become a tangible reality across the globe. Mobile phone subscriptions have reached approximately 120 million, he said, with a 10 percent increase in users within a single year, a rate significantly exceeding the global average of just 2.5 percent. Talaat also noted ongoing cooperation with companies to complete service coverage across all roads and to finalize the 'Decent Life' projects related to technological services. He confirmed that efforts are underway to ensure telecommunications services will cover all parts of Egypt. The minister further noted the substantial growth in freelancing, with the number of Egyptian accounts on freelancing platforms reaching about half a million, a significant jump from just 50,000 previously. This underscores technology's impact in creating new employment opportunities. The CEO of Telecom Egypt, Mohamed Nasr, stated that the company's acquisition of the 5G license is part of investments exceeding LE35 billion this year, aimed at improving infrastructure. Govt committed to flexible exchange rate
CAIRO, June 4 (MENA) - Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli's reiterated on Wednesday his government's full coordination with the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) on the country's monetary policy and exchange rate. Speaking to "Baheb Izaa'a" radio program, cabinet spokesman Mohamed el Homsani said the prime minister stressed during the latest press conference that monetary policy remains the exclusive mandate of the CBE and that the government supports a flexible exchange rate. He praised the sound management of the monetary file, citing improved currency stability and the disappearance of the parallel market since March 2024, following a series of professional reform measures by the central bank. About Egypt's industrial strategy, the spokesman said Madbouli reviewed the Public Works Ministry's efforts to overhaul the textile and spinning factories in El Mahalla El-Kubra city, saying the State is investing around EGP 60 billion to develop this important sector with the aim of engaging the private sector in managing and operating these factories in a bid to maximize profits. He said the State is attaching importance to localizing electric vehicle (EV) production and is adopting a comprehensive strategy that involves replacing old vehicles with new ones and offering enhanced incentives to both domestic and foreign investors. He noted that EV development has become a national priority due to its environmental benefits. He added that the government has made tangible progress in boosting local automotive output for both domestic consumption and exports. Customs clearance duration was significantly reduced from one week to four days and is to reach two days by September, easing costs for importers and lowering consumer prices. About the social housing file, the spokesperson said the government covers nearly 60% of the cost of each social housing unit offered to low-income citizens, a kind of financial support that cannot be afforded by the private sector.
