Windows 10 and Windows 11 critical update as users urged 'not to ignore'
Microsoft Windows has released a critical update, with users being urged to check immediately if their PC and laptop are up to date.
Those who are operating their PC or laptops on Windows 10 or Windows 11 have been urged to check their settings immediately. It comes as Microsoft launch a major update which people are being cautioned not to ignore.
As part of the platforms Patch Tuesday programme, the latest upgrade from the Redmond firm fixes a total of 72 flaws within its popular operating systems. Not worrying enough? Six of these bugs have been deemed 'critical' and given a 'zero-day' rating.
To break it down for users further, 'zero-day' essentially means hackers are aware of the gremlins and are actively exploiting them in the wild. This is why Microsoft has rushed so quickly to fix the problems in a bid to keep people safe, as reported by the Express.
The bugs include Privilege Vulnerabilities, Bypass Vulnerabilities and Spoofing Vulnerabilities, with it now being vital that you check your PC or laptop is running the very latest version of Windows 10 or Windows 11 without delay.
Explaining more, the security team at Action1 said: "Attackers exploiting these vulnerabilities can escalate privileges to system level, granting them full control to run arbitrary code, install malware, modify data or disable security protections.
"With low complexity and minimal privileges needed, these flaws pose a serious risk, especially given the confirmed in-the-wild."
How do I check my system is updated?
To check if your PC or laptop is up to date, you can head to settings, navigate to update and security, then Windows update, and select 'Check for updates'.
This new patch offers a glimpse into why Windows 10 users should consider switching to Windows 11. From October, free updates like the one released this week will no longer be available, and that will put Windows 10 users at much higher risk of issues and cyber attacks.
"Starting Oct. 14, 2025, Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates," explained Yusuf Mehdi, Executive Vice President, Consumer Chief Marketing Officer.
"As security threats evolve and adapt, so must our operating systems and hardware. Because of this, we designed Windows 11 to be the most secure version of Windows ever — by default and design — to help you stay ahead of those risks."

AI-driven search ad spending set to surge to $26 billion by 2029, data shows
June 4 (Reuters) - Spending on AI-powered search advertising is poised to surge to nearly $26 billion by 2029 from just over $1 billion this year in the U.S., driven by rapid adoption of the technology and more sophisticated user targeting, data from Emarketer showed on Wednesday. Companies that rely on traditional keyword-based search ads could experience revenue declines due to the growing popularity of AI search ads, which offer greater convenience and engagement for users, according to the research firm. Search giants such as Alphabet-owned (GOOGL.O), opens new tab Google and Microsoft's (MSFT.O), opens new tab Bing have added AI capabilities to better compete with chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Perplexity AI, which provide users with direct information without requiring to click through multiple results. Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab is exploring the integration of AI-driven search capabilities into its Safari browser, potentially moving away from its longstanding partnership with Google. The report has come as concerns grew about users increasingly turning to the chatbots for conversational search and AI-powered search results could upend business models of some companies. Online education firm Chegg (CHGG.N), opens new tab said in May that it would lay off about 248 employees as it looks to cut costs and streamline operations because students are using AI-powered tools including ChatGPT over traditional edtech platforms. "Publishers and other sites are feeling the pain from AI search. As they lose out on traffic, we're seeing publishers lean into subscriptions and paid AI licensing deals to bolster revenue," Emarketer analyst Minda Smiley said. GRAPHIC AI search ad spending is expected to constitute nearly 1% of total search ad spending this year and 13.6% by 2029 in the U.S., according to Emarketer. Sectors such as financial services, technology, telecom, and healthcare are embracing AI as they are seeing clear advantages in using the technology to enhance their ad strategies, while the retail industry's adoption is slow, the report said. Google recently announced the expansion of its AI-powered search capabilities into the consumer packaged goods sector through enhancements in Google Shopping.

Nintendo Switch 2 will outsell all PC handhelds in 2025 claims report
An analyst firm has predicted the Nintendo Switch 2 will sell 13 million consoles this year, double the sales of the entire PC handheld market. The Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to be a big success based on pre-order numbers, but many analysts are even more optimistic about its chances than Nintendo themselves. According to analyst group Ampere, the Switch 2 will surpass 13 million consoles sold in 2025. For comparison, the original Switch sold just over 15 million consoles within its first fiscal year, but this 13 million number covers just the next six months. The original Switch launched in March 2017, so based on these projections, it's possible the Switch 2 could surpass the original console's numbers by the end of the current fiscal year (end of March 2026), despite having three months less time on the market. While companies like Microsoft are making moves to enter the PC gaming handheld space, it's noted that these projected 13 million sales for the Switch 2 are double that market's overall sales. A report earlier this year found the Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and the MSI Claw have collectively shipped just under six million units – the Steam Deck is the lion's share of that with around 4 million sales. According to Ampere (via The Game Business), 56% of Steam Deck owners use a Switch, while only 1.3% of Switch owners 'consider Steam Deck to be their primary console'. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. While this isn't exactly surprising, considering the Steam Deck has always been a niche device you can't actually buy in stores, it's a reminder of how the Switch and the Switch 2 really have no equal competitors in the handheld arena. Elsewhere, Ampire predicts the combined active install base of Switch and Switch 2 will reach 130 million by 2027. More Trending As for Switch 2 sales, the console is expected to sell over 100 million units by the end of 2030. At the time of writing, after eight years on the market, the original Switch has surpassed 152.12 million sales. Last month, Nintendo said it was aiming to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles by the end of the 2026 fiscal year. This lower than expected estimate was likely adjusted due to the US tariffs, and it's still unclear whether these will have a significant impact in the months to come. The Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, with Mario Kart World, Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, and Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition leading the launch line-up.
