New drivers flee with cars to Lucknow, Gaya

1 2 Kolkata: Be careful before handing over your car to a driver based on some random online searches. Cops insist that if possible, hire the driver from a reputed agency and ensure you have enough documents ready. At least two cases have been reported from south Kolkata where a gang, responding to online queries, is masquerading as drivers and stealing vehicles to then sell them off in UP and Bihar. Raju Singh, who recently purchased a car through a loan, hired Mohit Kumaras a full-time driver through the website "Work India". Kumar was employed by the Singh family since May 29, charging Rs 500 for six hours of daily service. On May 3, around 10.30 am, Kumar picked up Singh, along with his mother and wife, from their Haridevpur residence and dropped the family near a momo shop on Sarat Bose Road and drove away, claiming there was no parking available nearby. After multiple failed attempts to contact the driver, the family discovered that the car's GPS system was disabled, making it difficult to track the vehicle's location. The car was later traced to the Asansol area by the police. Within hours, the next location was found to be Lucknow. This incident follows a similar case where the Kasba police station recently arrested four individuals for a comparable scheme. In that case, Somnath Mukherjee rented a car through an app-based service from owner Pravesh Kothari before disappearing with the vehicle. The police successfully tracked the car to Durgapur Expressway near Memari, where they apprehended four suspects who had initially taken the car to Gaya. "People who rely on internet platforms to hire drivers often compromise their security," said a cop. "While hiring drivers provides convenience for non-drivers, the lack of proper verification systems on these platforms poses significant risks," he added.

Bengaluru stampede: Shadow-boxing between CM & Dy CM reason for tragedy, says Opposition leader Ashoka

Following the tragic stampede in Bengaluru during RCB's victory celebrations, opposition leaders are criticizing the Congress government. They allege a lack of planning and coordination between the Chief Minister and Deputy CM led to the disaster. Demands are mounting for a judicial inquiry, accountability, and substantial compensation for the victims' families, citing negligence in ensuring public safety during the event. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Opposition leader in the Assembly R Ashoka on Wednesday pointed fingers at the 'shadow boxing' between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar for the confusion leading to the tragic stampede in BJP leader, in a statement said, the competition between the two leaders to claim credit for the RCB's win of the IPL was responsible for the mishap, while calling the deaths a government sponsored murder. He said the Dy CM rushed to the airport to take photographs with the players instead of supervising the arrangements in Bengaluru, and the police were also clueless about the procession. There were no ambulances or fire brigades at the stadium, he demanded Rs 25 lakh compensation to the families of the deceased and must fully bear the treatment cost of the state president BY Vijayendra demanded a judicial inquiry into the stampede deaths and a compensation of Rs 25 to each of the families of the deceased. He said 11 people paid up with their lives as the government held and allowed the events without any planning. Hundreds, he said, had been hospitalized. When people were suffering in the crowds, the CM, ministers and children of officers were busy gathering autographs of players, he said.'Stampede-like scenes during RCB's victory celebrations are not just tragic, they are a damning indictment of the Congress government,' he said in a post on X. He wondered if the CM reviewed the plans and Dy CM supervised medical and police deployment.'Mumbai hosted a massive World Cup parade without a single stampede. So why did Bengaluru fail? Because in Karnataka, Congress cares more about publicity than public safety. The fans of RCB and the people of Karnataka deserve the answers. Therefore, I urge the government to order a judicial inquiry and fix accountability for this avoidable Heavy Industry & Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy blamed the government. The primary reason for this massive tragedy is the lack of proper planning and complete failure to take precautionary measures. The state government, led by the Congress, must take full responsibility for this disaster.' It is extremely painful to see innocent lives lost even before the celebrations could begin,' he said in a statement.

Wild elephant tramples fisherman to death near Coimbatore

Representative image COIMBATORE: A fisherman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in the Bhavani Sagar backwaters at Mayilmokkai, located within the Sirumugai forest range, in the early hours of Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as A George alias Chelladurai of Kothamangalam village near Sathyamangalam in Erode district. George stayed in a temporary shed on a small patch of land in the middle of the river and fished. George and three other fishermen set up fishing nets in the river and slept on the patch of land. Around 1 am, a wild tusker waded through knee-deep water, reached there and trampled George. The others became aware of the elephant's presence only after the incident. They managed to escape by swimming across the river. "The elephant entered the patch of land as the water level was only knee-deep. After trampling George, it returned to the river," said an official in the Sirumugai forest range. Following the incident, forest officials instructed fishermen to vacate the area and avoid staying there overnight as a precautionary measure. George's body was retrieved and sent to Mettupalayam Govt Hospital, where a postmortem was conducted. 'We gave an initial compensation of Rs 50,000 to the deceased's family. The remaining Rs 9.50 lakh will be disbursed once the family submits the required documents, including the death certificate and medical records,' the official added.
