Kolkata: A joint team of

and the SIT probing the
Murshidabad violence
on Sunday arrested Fekarul Sk, a prime suspect in the homicide of a father and son on April 12. The arrest took place during an early morning raid in Howrah district's Domjur area.
The 24-year-old, also known as Mohak, was working as a labourer while evading authorities. Police claimed he was seen leading the mob into the victims' residence on CCTV.

Confirming the arrest, ADG (law & order) Jawed Shamim stated that the focus now was to gather maximum evidence so that a timely charge sheet could be placed in court. "Fekarul, a resident of Sulitala in Shamsherganj (the same village where prime accused Ziaul Sk and his two sons reside), is accused of using a sharp weapon to fatally attack the father and son. His involvement came to light during the interrogation of arrested suspects," said a senior SIT official.

This was the sixth arrest in the murder of Haragobindo Das (70) and his son Chandan (40), who were found with stab wounds in Jafrabad on April 12. The accused will be presented before the Murshidabad district court.

CBI books former clerk for demanding Rs7 lakh from accused
Madurai: The CBI, anti corruption branch (ACB) in Madurai recently registered a case against a former lower division clerk of the CBI for demanding a bribe of 7 lakh from an accused to remove his name from the chargesheet filed in connection with an income tax fraud case. K Ramachandran was working as a teacher in a panchayat union primary school in Ramanathapuram district. He won the National Best Teacher Award in 2022. The CBI (ACB) registered a case against Ramachandran, his brother, and others since they conspired together, collected particulars of numerous people, manipulated their signatures, obtained the income tax refund, and swindled the amount. Ramachandran, who was arrested, subsequently obtained bail. According to the FIR, Dinesh Kumar of Haryana, who was working as the then lower division clerk, joined the Madurai CBI (ACB) office in 2022 on transfer. In June 2023, Ramachandran came to the CBI office in Madurai to sign the book for complying with the bail conditions imposed by the Madurai bench of Madras high court. On the same day, Kumar asked Ramachandran to go to a shop near the office. Ramachandran recorded a video of the entire conversation between him and Kumar demanding a bribe. After the video appeared on news channels and news in this regard was published in newspapers in Dec 2023, CBI (ACB) conducted a preliminary inquiry. Since it was established that Kumar demanded a bribe from Ramachandran, consent was obtained to prosecute him. Subsequently, the CBI (ACB) registered a case against Kumar for an offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act in May.

Gurgaon: In three years, 102 claims have been filed by families or victims of hit-and-run accidents, of which compensation has been disbursed for only two of them. Two cases are in the final stages of processing, and the remaining – 98 – are still being investigated by police. This slow pace of resolution has left families of accident victims in the lurch, with some waiting for years after they applied for aid under the 2022 Hit-and-Run Motor Accident Compensation scheme. The scheme, which falls under Section 161 of the Motor Vehicles Act , came into effect from April 1, 2022. It offers Rs 2 lakh as compensation in cases of fatalities, and Rs 50,000 for serious injuries. The scheme is only applicable for hit-and-run accidents, in which police have not been able to identify the errant driver or vehicle. Sunita, a city resident whose husband died in a hit-and-run accident on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway this year, told TOI she has been waiting for compensation for months. Her husband was the only earning member of the family. "My husband was returning home after work on a cycle when he was hit by an unknown vehicle. In accident cases in which the errant driver/vehicle has been identified, victims and their families can approach the Motor Accident Claim Tribunal (MACT) and file a case to seek compensation. The tribunal, after hearing both sides, determines the amount of compensation that may be paid to accident victims or their families. In many cases, the company that insured the errant driver's vehicle is asked to provide compensation.
