Daybreak Foods workers call for management overhaul amid financial turmoil

The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has obtained an urgent court order against Daybreak Foods, compelling the company to cease inhumane culling practices and provide adequate care for hundreds of thousands of breeder birds at risk of starvation and suffering.

Workers at Daybreak Foods' farms have laid down a series of demands that centre on the immediate termination of Chief People Officer Tshepo Yvonne Mosadi's contract, alongside a comprehensive overhaul of the company's board and management structure.
This demand comes as the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) on Friday injected a further R74 million into the embattled farming establishment in a bid to pay for outstanding salaries for April, buy chicken feed supplies, and for specific essential operational expenses.
The R74m, which is part of the R250m financial support requested by Daybreak in February, was initially earmarked for capital expenditure.
On Friday, the Daybreak Workers Union issued a letter detailing their demands and expressed deep concerns over past management practices.
"To avoid suffering the same fate, we are eliminating that risk, and avoiding the new cash injection falling into the same hands that have already proven to be incapable and incompetent to run and manage the establishment," read the letter, which was seen by Business Report.
Workers also voiced multiple grievances, including the accounting methods related to overtime, delays in payment of May salaries, and inadequate provisions for Personal Protective Clothing (PPE). Further, there were calls for revisions in production pauses to ensure better working conditions, alongside critical changes to the slaughter culture that could impact both worker safety and animal welfare.
Mosadi, a nominee for the Chief Human Resources Officer Awards in 2023, has faced backlash, accused by workers of being disconnected from their plight.
Sources indicate that the PIC, which recently authorised a R100 million emergency fund known as the "Sunday Account," aims to address the immediate liquidity needs that have left workers and the company in a precarious situation.
This emergency fund, confirmed on Thursday and Friday, is a part of the overall financial package being arranged by the PIC.

Though the PIC on Friday announced the decision to provide immediate financial support to Daybreak Foods, it reiterated that the board and management of Daybreak Foods remained responsible and accountable for the company's operations and finances.
"The PIC is strengthening the board and assisting it to strengthen management to help to bring stability to the company and to resume normal operations," said the PIC.
"Daybreak's leadership is tasked to develop and implement a turnaround strategy and a credible turnaround plan to ensure long- term sustainability and growth, including how the company intends to avert job losses and safeguard the welfare of the livestock."
Meanwhile, the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) on Saturday obtained an urgent court order against Daybreak Foods, compelling the company to cease inhumane culling practices and provide adequate care for hundreds of thousands of breeder birds at risk of starvation and suffering.
This followed a catastrophic welfare emergency currently unfolding at two of Daybreak's breeder farms in Bela-Bela and Mookgopong. An estimated 594 000 birds are at immediate risk of starvation, suffering from cannibalism, injuries, and prolonged neglect due to insufficient feeding and inhumane culling practices.
According to a whistleblower report, the upheaval at the company stems from Daybreak's attempt to remove the PIC as mandate holder and appoint a private entity specialising in investors mandates.
The report revealed that the PIC acts only as an investor mandate holder on behalf of these shareholders, not as a direct shareholder with the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF), Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), and the Compensation Fund (CF), each holding 33.3% of the entity.
The complications have disrupted normal governance, with no Annual General Meetings (AGMs) convened since 2021 and a shocking turnover of four CEOs in merely four years — a clear reflection of governance failures.
A whistleblower report has drawn attention to inadequate board oversight, failure to exercise diligent oversight of executive decisions, absence of consequence management enabled unchecked misconduct, deficiencies in fiscal management created vulnerabilities for mismanagement.

Approximately 13 000 years ago. People were fermenting wheat and barley in Israel's Raqefet Cave's. That's according to UK beer journalist and the author of The Meaning of Beer, Jonny Garret, who was one of the keynote speakers at last weekend's BeerEx Africa conference held at the V&A Waterfront's Makers Landing. The opening panel discussion focused on the state of the beer industry in South Africa, followed by a session on brewing lager with dry yeast, sensory training, tips on hops' best-practices and the potential of sorghum in brewing. Some of the conversations centred around how South Africa, a country with a rich history of female brewing, finds itself 90 percent male-led in the beer industry? Why Africa is yet to develop a commercially viable yeast strain for beer production? "The South African beer industry contributes R98 billion to the country's GDP and R74 billion in tax revenue. This industry employs thousands of people, it creates livelihoods and yet it is penalised with sin taxes. Of those who drink it is only 10 percent that tend to give beer a bad name. Beer has low levels of alcohol and as an association we encourage responsible drinking. We produce some of the best beers in the world and we are not doing enough to promote this. There are quite a number of economic opportunities that still need to be realised in this industry." What set this conference apart from the rest was the fact that one could literally sit back with a bottle of beer in hand during proceedings as well as sample some of the best beers from around the world. Everyone pulled out their tasting glasses when it was time to sample Pliny the Elder, a double Indian Pale Ale (IPA) brewed by the Russian River Brewing Company in California. It is currently considered the best craft beer in the world and it necessitated that I suspend my self-imposed teetotalism to taste it. Russian River Brewing Company founders Vinnie and Natalie Cilurzo gave an afternoon talk to a room full of brewers, beer lovers and beverage industry experts. It was more a motivational talk on how Vinnie started brewing from as early as 1994, their struggles as a couple in the beer industry and how their popularity suddenly surged in 2010 when they were rated highly on and Beer does not taste great in general. It's bitter and is more of an acquired taste. Much like wine. So, I really did not know what to look out for when tasting Pliny the Elder but what did stand out is that it tasted far lighter than its claimed 8 percent alcohol volume. Upon first kiss it was gentle and gave off citrus and grapefruit notes. Crisp even and lacked that heavy-meal-like rounded taste I've come to associate with craft beers. And this got me thinking about South African beer drinkers and why craft beers aren't as popular in this country. Beyond us being brand-loyalists one tends to find that craft beers can be relatively pricey, aren't readily available in all outlets, vary significantly in terms of taste and many of them aren't associated with easy-drinking. I still find it hard to believe that anyone drinks beer for taste. It's more for effect. Be that as it may, there is potential for growth and space for many more brewers in this country. Romina Delicio, one of the partners of BeerEx Africa, told me that many more beer promotional efforts are underway and there's even a dedicated South African beer route online. Image: Supplied Co-Founder of Cactus Crafts, Willie Hamman, added that producing more flavoured beers can significantly increase as well as change the beer drinker profile in this country. "Craft beer is associated with older pale males in this country. How do we change that? We could start by working on more flavoured beers that can appeal to women and younger people," said Hamman during one of the many expo talks on the ground floor where beverage industry suppliers also did interactive demos, homebrewing workshops, social media competitions, packaging and pouring demos. One of the joys of attending BeerEx Africa is interacting with beer judges and brewers from around the world. There are even brewers, like Harper Brewing Co and the Candy Cane Project, that brew for charity not profit. There was a lot of learning on my part this year.

JOHANNESBURG - Ekurhuleni residents may have to pay more for municipal services following the city's decision to raise tariffs. Finance MMC Jongizizwe Dlabathi announced increases in service charges during his budget speech on Thursday to come into effect in the 2025/2026 year. If the Ekurhuleni City Council approves the proposed budget, residents will see a 15% increase in their monthly water bills. Electricity prices are also set to rise, but only in accordance with the guidelines set by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA). Additionally, refuse removal fees will go up by 6%, while sanitation services will cost 10% more. Dlabathi said when compared to other metros, these increases are relatively reasonable. "Our 2025/26 tariffs are lesser on sanitation and refuse removal compared to the City of Joburg, Cape Town and eThekwini, except for the City of Tshwane. Similarly, the average comparative analysis of 2024/25 tariffs shows that we came second with 10.43%, while the City of Cape Town approved the highest average tariff of 13.71%.' These tariffs will go towards funding the city's R65 billion budget.

In September 2022, CCMA commissioners Cameron Morajane and Nthabiseng Thokoane declared her dismissal substantively and procedurally unfair, and she was reinstated. The PIC was ordered to pay the costs, and in a supplementary award, the commissioners quantified her backpay and costs due at more than R6.74m and R39 000, respectively. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ She was charged after approving R350m revolving credit facility to the now defunct VBS Mutual Bank in 2014, which was outside her delegation of authority. The PIC accused More of recommending the then chief executive, Dr Dan Matjila, to enter into the revolving credit facility agreement in breach of her duty to ensure that the terms of the agreement complied with the fund investment panels' approval before providing the confirmation and recommending that it be signed. More then referred her unfair dismissal dispute to the CCMA, where she argued that the alleged misconduct constituted a breach of contract. The CCMA found that the claim (charging and dismissal) that the PIC has against More is extinct through the running of uninterrupted prescription. The commissioners deemed the charges and subsequent dismissal incompetent. In addition, the commissioners stated that as the instruction was in contravention of the delegation of authority, More's dismissal was therefore premised on an unlawful and unreasonable instruction and the charges and the subsequent dismissal were unfair. 'More has succeeded in her claim for prescription. The outcome is that the dismissal is substantively and procedurally unfair. The instruction issued by Dr Matjila as found above was unreasonable and unlawful,' the CCMA ruled. The PIC then approached the Labour Court in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, arguing that the commissioners committed a material error of law. Last month, Labour Court Judge Connie Prinsloo reviewed and set aside the CCMA's arbitration award and the supplementary award. 'The matter is remitted to the CCMA for arbitration de novo by a senior commissioner or commissioners, as the case may be, other than the third and fourth respondents (Morajane and Thokoane),' reads Judge Prinsloo's judgment, adding that the record of proceedings generated the supplementary case shall serve as the evidence before the appointed commissioner or commissioners. The arbitration de novo (afresh) is to be conducted on such terms and in such manner as the appointed commissioner or commissioners may determine, and the CCMA was directed to enrol the matter for arbitration. Attempts to contact More were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
