FIFA defends Club World Cup ticket sales after another low turnout

Independent4 hours ago

FIFA has defended the progress of ticket sales for the Club World Cup after another low turnout for a group stage game on Tuesday evening.
Just 3,412 people attended the match in Orlando between Ulsan HD of South Korea and South African side Mamelodi Sundowns, after 22,317 watched Chelsea's opening game against Los Angeles FC in Atlanta, in a stadium which can hold up to 71,000 people.
The competition has been controversial since its inception and has triggered legal action from domestic leagues and player unions against FIFA over what they see as a lack of consultation by the global governing body over fixture decisions.
There have been some big crowds – with more than 80,000 people watching Paris St Germain's victory over Atletico Madrid in Pasadena – and FIFA said on Tuesday that close to 1.5 million tickets had so far been sold.
FIFA said 340,000 fans had attended the first eight matches, which it said was a 'powerful demonstration of club football's global appeal'. It said four of the five top-selling group stage matches were still to come.
Manchester City make their tournament bow against Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca on Wednesday evening.
The prize money on offer is huge, with City or Chelsea standing to earn almost £100million if they win it.
Despite that, former City defender Danny Mills described the competition as 'pointless'.
He told William Hill Vegas: 'I don't get it and I don't understand what kudos it brings.
'It might be a nice day out for the minnows like Auckland City FC, but for players from the top clubs, like Paris St Germain, Real Madrid and Manchester City, at the end of their careers, they are not going to care if they won the Club World Cup or not.
'It's a made-up competition for FIFA to make money, it's as simple as that. There is no prestige in winning the competition whatsoever.
'I don't really know if many people are watching it but there doesn't seem to be much interest in the matches at all. It's an unnecessary tournament.'

Yusuf thanks Durham after first SA Test call-up

Codi Yusuf has thanked Durham as he cuts short his stint with the county to join up with South Africa's Test originally signed for six Championship matches, but he is leaving early after being picked for the World Test Champions' two-match series in Zimbabwe, starting on 28 right-arm fast-medium bowler impressed with 17 wickets in his four Durham games at an average of just over 20."It's been an unbelievable experience, and there's been a lot of growth for me," he said, external."There's a lot I can go into this first Test call-up with." South Africa have rested five of the team that beat Australia at Lord's for these two games in Zimbabwe, including new-ball bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Marco puts Yusuf in line for a Test debut, and after a strong domestic summer, he has done well in in to cover an injury crisis on a recommendation from fellow Durham and now South Africa team-mate David Bedingham, he took six wickets on his Durham debut against Worcestershire as the team won two and drew one of those four Championship games."It's been phenomenal," he said. "Starting in Worcester was a lovely introduction to county cricket for me, and I carried on from that."If Durham ever give me a call at some point down the line, I'll take it in a heartbeat to make sure I'm back playing here."

Flamengo vs Chelsea preview: Free betting tips, odds and predictions for the Club World Cup

CHELSEA and Brazilian side Flamengo, who both enjoyed winning starts at the Club World Cup, clash at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Friday. SunSport betting experts have previewed the contest and selected the best bets, tips and exclusive sign-up bonuses from our leading betting partners. Flamengo vs Chelsea preview Chelsea will be aiming to build on their solid start to the Club World Cup when they face Brazilian side Flamengo in Philadelphia on Friday. The Blues opened their campaign with a routine 2-0 victory over Los Angeles FC, played out in front of a sparse crowd. Goals from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez sealed the win, while summer signing Liam Delap caught the eye with an impressive 30-minute cameo. The £30 million recruit marked his debut with an assist, offering supporters a glimpse of his potential in blue. Manager Enzo Maresca named a near full-strength XI for the opener, and he's expected to stick with a similar line-up for the tougher test against Flamengo. Some rotation may come in Chelsea's final group fixture against Esperance de Tunis, provided they take care of business on Friday. Despite the win, it's hard to draw too many conclusions from the LAFC game, with the MLS side currently fifth in the Western Conference. Chelsea also benefited from favourable conditions, playing in a climate-controlled venue, while their next two matches are just a short distance from their training base in Philadelphia. So they should be in good shape to take on a sterner test in Flamengo. The Brazilian side, top of their domestic league after 11 games, began their campaign with a commanding 2-0 win over Esperance. They arrive excellent form, unbeaten in 15 of their last 16 matches across all competitions and riding a five-game winning streak. Under the guidance of former Chelsea full-back Filipe Luís, Flamengo have been rock-solid at the back too - keeping seven clean sheets in their last eight. They also have another familiar face in Jorginho, who made 213 appearances for the Blues. Flamengo vs Chelsea preview betting tips and predictions Goals? Unlikely I'd like to predict a goal-frenzy in Philadelphia on Friday but chances of that are looking slim. As mentioned, much of Flamengo's recent success has been built on their solid defence - which has returned seven clean sheets in their last eight matches. They've also conceded exactly one big chances in their last three combined. As for Chelsea, only one of their last six games has witnessed both teams on the scoresheet, while five of their last six has yielded Under 2.5 goals. 1st Home Goalscorer If Flamengo are to score, and chances are they will given they've blanked just once in their last 12, it's more than likely to come from Giorgian de Arrascaeta. The Uruguayan, 31, opened the scoring against Esperance in their Club World Cup opener - and now has four goals in his last six for club and country. Arrascaeta has 13 goals and six assists in 27 appearances this season and is more than capable of making his mark against European opposition on Friday. Ruben Amorim and Mikel Arteta dealt toughest hands after Prem announcement

In a lengthy interview that made the headlines for a comment about his mum being 'repulsed' by some of Jude Bellingham's antics, Thomas Tuchel also spoke about the effect the Club World Cup will have on Manchester City and Chelsea. The tournament in the United States would, he said, result in City and Chelsea being at a 'huge' disadvantage in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign. And the England manager is not the only one to think along those lines. Several times, Enzo Maresca and Pep Guardiola have voiced their major concerns over the physical and mental demands being made on their players. It might only be the slightest of consolations but perhaps the Premier League fixture schedulers have shown some sympathy for Guardiola and Maresca. Working on the basis that the three promoted teams are ranked 18th, 19th and 20th, the average finishing position from last season of City's first six opponents next season is 13th (12.8, to be precise). That figure is 12th (11.67) for Chelsea. Just as significantly, Chelsea do not have to leave London until over a month into the campaign, a home starter against Crystal Palace being followed by a trip to West Ham before a derby with Fulham at Stamford Bridge is followed by a short hop to Brentford. Of the first six teams faced by both City and Chelsea, only two finished in last season's Premier League top ten. Arsenal and Manchester United, on the other hand, each have four fixtures against top-ten teams in their opening six matches. And the average finishing position of their first six opponents last season was eighth (8.17). That represents a decidedly more challenging start for Ruben Amorim and Mikel Arteta - who go up against each other at Old Trafford on the opening weekend of the season - than the one faced by Guardiola and Maresca. In fact, in the context of last season's form, no team has a harder opening six-game spell than the one in front of United and Arsenal. Normally, this type of imbalance produces two predictable responses. Firstly, what's the problem? Everyone has to play everyone twice. The simple answer is that a good start can build momentum while a bad start can undermine confidence. A bad start can cost a manager his job, don't forget. A second retort usually involves the old cliche about the Premier League is a competition in which everyone can beat everyone and that there are no easy games in the Premier League. And there is simply no truth in those assertions. Between them, Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton managed to record only 12 victories from their combined 114 Premier League games last season. Four of those 12 wins came in games against each other. They had a combined goal difference of minus 153. There ARE easy matches in the Premier League and they normally come against teams promoted from the Championship. That is why Nottingham Forest fans and manager Nuno Espírito Santo will be satisfied with their schedule as they face two promoted teams in their opening six fixtures. Forest's start looks as relatively inviting as City's and Chelsea's but Maresca and Guardiola will, understandably, remind everyone of their summer workload if it is suggested they have some sort of advantage. But what is for certain is that the Premier League schedule, by its very nature, cannot be completely fair. And this time, it is Amorim and Arteta who have been dealt the trickiest hands.
