It started one evening in the early 2000s when my husband Robby, better known to his fans as the DJ Rob da Bank, and I were – to put it politely – a little tipsy.
That eventful night, we hatched a plan to start a brand new music festival that we called Bestival – and even though we hadn't really thought it through back then, here we are, some 20-odd years later, still running the family-friendly spin-off we launched in 2008, Camp Bestival, albeit with greyer hair, four kids and an ever-patient bank manager.
It's probably best that we were a bit loopy, as, if I'm honest, I'm not sure anything could have prepared us for the reality of running a music festival. Forget the bands: the first thing we needed to master was the clear-up. When all our guests go home on Monday, the work doesn't stop there. Instead, that's when we go through the knackering and somewhat depressing experience of taking down the stages, sets and campsites. Depending on the weather, this can take anything from a week to a whole month.
Then, hot off the heels of one festival, we have to start planning the next; fixing any bits that didn't go right – no festival ever runs completely smoothly – and worrying about how to sell a fresh batch of 30,000 tickets. Yet, for some reason, this whole psychologically challenging and physically exhausting process is oddly addictive.
When Merlin was a baby, I remember us sleeping in a Mongolian yurt with him and Arlo, then 2, who was suffering from a hacking croup cough. Spiders crawled across the cot and cold crept in and kept us awake. But each morning, as the sun hit the canvas, we felt more alive and inspired than by any morning in 'the real world'.
Watching Florence and The Machine, Ed Sheeran (then barely famous and playing to 30 screaming teens), a brooding Bon Iver and the legendary Chuck Berry play across our first couple of years set a benchmark for us. It proved that family festivals need not be 'poptastic' and full of naff activities – they could be cool, too.
We've worked hard to achieve this status. In Camp Bestival, we have created a multi-layered, multi-venue wonderland for kids of all ages – as well as their parents and grandparents. Surrounded by rolling fields, colourful tents and shady woodlands, they can get lost in hundreds of activities and creative happenings all day. Screens are forgotten, devices are ignored, and for once technology takes a backseat.
One of the biggest challenges I've faced with Camp Bestival came five days after giving birth to our youngest child, Miller, in 2017. Bearing a freshly bandaged emergency C-section scar with my newborn baby and buggy in tow, I was hit with the very real reminder that the show must go on. When you're an independent festival promoter, maternity leave is a lovely idea, but not very practical.
Yes, we grow more exhausted as the weekend progresses. But as each day unfolds, we feel better and better for having so many unique, memory-making experiences, and we're able to temporarily forget the day job, mortgage or the state of the world. Encouraging creativity and exposing kids to the performing arts, live bands and DJs, as well as immersive arts and crafts, is what motivates us – and is so enriching for them.
We still camp on-site with our kids for that reason – and they all have their assigned jobs. Arlo, now 19, lends a hand to the art department, helping them build and create sets; young entrepreneur Merlin, 17, has his own on-site sweet shop; Miller, 15, goes full DIY mode; and our youngest, Eli, 8, does the most important job of all: he enjoys the festival and reminds us why we do it.
Of course, festival life has its challenges – not least being woken up in a sweaty teepee by one of the kids at 3am or having one of them 'steal' a golf buggy from the crew. But, as I look around at what we've created, almost two decades on, I know I wouldn't change any of it for the world.

A CORNER shop from a classic 70s sitcom went under the hammer last year and is now an unassuming home. The building quietly sits in the Balby suburb of Doncaster in South Yorkshire. 5 5 It went under the hammer with a guide price of £150,000, before selling for £145,000 in October. It's likely that those living next-door have no idea that the building was once on one of Britain's most iconic TV shows. Open All Hours, which aired in 1976, ran for four seasons. It was rated the eighth best sitcom in the country in 2004. The show ran from 1976 to 1985 and had 17 million viewers a week at its peak. Created by Roy Clarke, the plot followed Albert Arkwright, who runs a grocery shop in Doncaster's Balby and is in love with Nurse Gladys, who lives opposite his shop. But Gladys rejects his proposals as she has to look after her ill mother. The fictional shop owned by Arkwright - played by Ronnie Barker - used a residential property for exterior shots. After the show ended, the building went up for auction but failed to sell. It was earmarked for demolition before campaigners saved it in 2008. The property was then concerned into a unisex hairdressers, called the Beautique hair salon. Auctioneers hoped that the property's TV history would attract plenty of bidders when it went to auction on October 16 with a guide price of £150,000. The building came with two self-contained flats on the upper floor and boasts an annual rent of £16,440 when fully let. Film crews moved in for weeks at a time for each series of Open All Hours. The end-terrace on Lister Avenue in Balby, less than a mile from Doncaster city centre, became a tourist attraction over the years. But now, those passing by would never guess at the house's history and fame. 5 5 Sir David Jason reveals touching gesture from Ronnie Barker after legendary Open All Hours star retired By Caron McKinlay ACTOR David Jason revealed this morning how the late Ronnie Barker gave him a touching gift. The two men worked together on classic sitcom Open All Hours from 1976 to 1985. During an appearance on Chris Moyles' Radio X show today, Sir David recounted how Ronnie gave him a certificate with fancy old fashioned writing. Chris asked if the writing was Calligraphy and David replied: 'Yes, that's it. Yeah.' David then went on to reveal that the certificate was about a foot wide by about two foot long . The certificate said 'Sir Ronnie Barker will give to his honourable friend, Sir David Jason, the title of The Governor which he shall now relinquish.' Chris and David agreed that the certificate was a lovely thing to do and then David asked Chris if he could guess where it's displayed. Chris correctly guessed it was displayed in the downstairs toilet and they both laughed. David went on to say that: 'Ronnie B was, which I learned, so generous with the whole team." He said that Ronnie knew that the only way you can get a successful show is to incorporate and encourage the team that you have. He said: "So, he had time for everybody, and he was generous of spirit and of time." David then said: "And because you do hear – no names, no pack drill – mainly some of the big names coming out of Hollywood who can be extremely difficult and a pain.'

THE Aga wins the Aga Derby. That's fairytale stuff, isn't it? I'm not so sure. I'm talking, of course, about Midak, one of the French raiders supplemented into Saturday's Group 1 Betfred Derby, the world's most famous Classic beamed to you live on ITV. 2 Derby Day should always be something special for anyone who loves the thoroughbred. For many it's the ultimate test of the Flat racehorse, and it has tested the best. Winners like Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Nashwan and Sea The Stars... as well as those in defeat like Dancing Brave and El Gran Senor. The twists and turns are one thing, the stamina test over a mile and a half of the Epsom Downs another. Will he stay? That will be the question many ask about the majority of today's runners. It's certainly a doubt for 2,000 Guineas hero Ruling Court, who was hardly mentioned after being chased home by fast-finishing Field of Gold at HQ. Could it just be Ruling Court was the best horse for William Buick and Charlie Appleby? Time will tell. Delacroix really should stay for the Derby King of Trainers, Aidan O'Brien. But Ballysax and Leopardstown Derby Trial victor Delacroix is by Dubawi. In itself that is no bad thing. But the super stallion has had nine runners to date in seven different editions of the Derby and none of them has finished in the first four. Dubawi himself ran in the 2005 Derby, eventually going down eight lengths to Motivator. That was six years after his sire, Dubai Millennium, met the only defeat of his career when sent off the favourite for the Derby. Pride of Arras has only raced twice but looked very useful when romping home from Damysus in a slowly run Dante at York which saw The Lion In Winter pull his chance away in the first two furlongs. Ralph Beckett's challenger, ridden by Hector Crouch, is bred to stay and could be the real deal for owner-breeder Mrs David Aykroyd. Her colours are also carried by Amiloc, who hacked up at Goodwood the other day but can't run here as he's been gelded. Lambourn is a similar type to Los Angeles who ran well behind stable companion City of Troy last year. Another O'Brien raider, Lambourn is proven over further having landed the Chester Vase but he was beaten by Delacroix in the Ballysax. The other I want to mention, before I get on to Midak, is Stanhope Gardens, who is another for Beckett and has always appeared to be a Derby type. Last season Stanhope Gardens was only beaten a neck by Delacroix in the Autumn Stakes at Newmarket. That puts him bang in the mix. The son of Ghaiyyath is bred to stay well and had effectively a racecourse gallop at Salisbury the other day when winning an event put on especially for him. But let's get back to my French fancy Midak. 2 He runs in the colours of Aga Khan Studs SCEA in a Derby run in memory of His Highness Aga Khan IV. That means he carries the green and red silks that have been worn at Epsom by legends like Shergar, Shahrastani, Kahyasi, Sinndar and Harzand. So, naturally, a Francis-Henri Graffard-trained Midak victory would be fairytale stuff under Mickaël Barzalona, who won this on Pour Moi in 2011. Midak is out of a mare by Sinndar and is already very useful. My hope is unbeaten in three races and his form suggests he's a solid, improving Group 2 horse, having scored well over an extended 1m2f at Saint-Cloud last time. He kept on well that day suggesting this trip would suit and of course he's bred for it. 'He's definitely a horse improving with his races and will definitely get the trip,' explained Nemone Routh, racing manager for the Aga Khan Studs. 'We're not sure on his form lines and how it stacks up, but all he can do is win and he's won every start. 'He's going to have to handle the track and he's a big horse with a big, long stride. Mickael Barzalona thinks he will handle the track because he's well balanced. 'We would be very happy to see him finish in the first three or even first five, but he is a bit of an unknown quantity and he does everything easily at home. It's a little bit of a shot in the dark, but we thought it was worth it.' It's the type of Derby to simply 'have a go'. And there would be no more poignant victory than one for Midak. .
