Romcom ageism: is George Clooney right to hang up his heartthrob hat at 63?
Name: Romcom age limits.
Age: 60.
Appearance: Twinkly (but slightly less twinkly than before).
Are we sure we should be doing this? We're going to get hammered for ageism, surely. Nah, it's fine.
Really? We're definitely going to get letters. No, it would be wrong and offensive if we were the ones saying that people were too old to be in romcoms. But we're not. We're just reporting on things that people in romcoms say.
Oh really? Like who? Like George Clooney. 'Look, I'm 63 years old. I'm not trying to compete with 25-year-old leading men,' he told 60 Minutes recently. 'I'm not doing romantic films any more.'
But wasn't he just in a romantic film? You're thinking of Ticket to Paradise, the film he made in 2022 when he was still a sexy young 60-year-old whippersnapper.
So he wouldn't make that today? No, are you kidding? He's 63, for heaven's sake. Don't be ridiculous.
Well, what about Hugh Grant? He's 64, and he was just in a romcom. You mean Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy?
Yes. Well, you're sort of right. But he wasn't the love interest, and his character was sort of pathetic for the whole thing. If we're playing by the rules, Grant hasn't been the star of an actual romcom since The Rewrite, which came out in 2014, when he was a spritely 54.
Come on, there must be someone. Matthew McConaughey? Well, he's only 55 and, therefore, still well within the Clooney Romcom Zone of Acceptability. But guess what? The last romcom he made was Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, and that came out in 2009, when he was still in his 30s (just).
I'm so conflicted. Tell me how to feel about this. Well, you should be pleased – it's unsightly to watch men in their seventh decade chasing around women young enough to be their daughters, which is usually the romcom dynamic.
OK, good. Also, since Grant has moved away from romcoms, he's made Heretic and Paddington 2, while McConaughey has embraced grittier parts in Interstellar and True Detective. The best work of their careers, in other words.
Wait! There's also Dustin Hoffman! Oh yes, he was in Last Chance Harvey when he was 71, and that was delightful. Plus, he starred opposite Emma Thompson!
But she was only 49 when it came out, which is still young. But then she was in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, which came out in June 2022, at which point she was …
63! Yes! The same age that George Clooney is now!
So we're saying that Thompson is proof that over-60s can still be in romcoms. Yes, and also proof that she can do whatever she wants and everyone will be thrilled.
Do say: 'George Clooney has decided he's too old for romcoms.'
Don't say: 'But not too old for those coffee adverts, sadly.'

Oprah accused of RUINING Cynthia Erivo's Tony Awards 2025 hosting debut with 'unnecessary' Wicked skit
Cynthia Erivo drew a mixed reaction as she hosted the 2025 Tony Awards on Sunday —delivering a performance that fans called both electrifying and cringeworthy. But according to many viewers, the cringe wasn't Cynthia's fault—it was thanks to an unexpected cameo from Oprah Winfrey. The 38-year-old British actress and singer was making her debut as emcee of the prestigious event and had just begun her walk from backstage to center stage when Oprah suddenly appeared onscreen to offer her support. The iconic TV host even referenced Cynthia's now-viral finger-holding moment with Ariana Grande during last year's Wicked promo tour. While Cynthia's bold red dress with a white collar drew comparisons to Little Orphan Annie, it was Oprah's surprise appearance that truly set social media ablaze, with fans calling her involvement 'unnecessary' and distracting. The iconic TV host even referenced Cynthia's now-viral finger-holding moment with Ariana Grande during last year's Wicked promo tour 'Oprah had to ruin the moment. Of course she had to put herself in the beginning #TonyAwards,' one frustrated fan posted. Another chimed in, 'Oprah was unnecessary #TonyAwards.' And a third wrote bluntly, 'Why does Oprah have to be in everything?' Meanwhile, this year's Tony's features major star power in the lead actor and actress categories. George Clooney is competing for his massively successful play Good Night, And Good Luck — an adaptation of the film of the same name that he directed, co-wrote and costarred in. Darren Criss and Jonathan Groff are adding some star power to the lead actor in a musical category, while Megan Hilty, Nicole Scherzinger and Broadway legend Audra McDonald are some of the biggest names in the lead actress in a musical category. Presenters this year include Charli D'Amelio, Michelle Williams, Hacks' Jean Smart, LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Lea Salonga, all of whom are currently appearing on Broadway. The stage icon Kristin Chenoweth will also be presenting, while Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter will have a Bill and Ted reunion on stage ahead of their upcoming production of Samuel Beckett's Waiting For Godot. Glee star Lea Michele will also be joined on stage by Aaron Tveit. While Cynthia's bold red dress with a white collar drew comparisons to Little Orphan Annie, it was Oprah's surprise appearance that truly set social media ablaze, with fans calling her involvement 'unnecessary' and distracting Several former Tony winners will be helping to announce awards, including Oprah Winfrey, Bryan Cranston, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sarah Paulson, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Kelli O'Hara and Rachel Bay Jones.

George Clooney returns to being a silver fox as he attends 2025 Tony Awards with glam wife Amal after 'awful dye job'
George Clooney 's return to silver fox status is nearly complete, several months after debuting a dye job that was mocked online. The actor, 63, attended the Tony Awards with the majority of his hair in it's familiar shade of grey. George, looking handsome in a slick black tuxedo, attended Broadway's biggest night with his gorgeous wife Amal by his side. Amal stunned in a white beaded dress teamed with a marble clutch and a head full of loose, romantic waves. George dyed his famous salt and pepper locks dark brown back in March for his role as legendary newsman Edward R. Murrow in his Broadway show Good Night And Good Luck. 'I know it's not good,' he previously admitted in a chat with Gayle King.
