NCAA baseball tournament descends into mayhem as players, coaches, parents ejected
Tensions flared during Saturday's NCAA baseball game between Samford and Mercer. Samford outfielder Michael Gupton hit a two-run homer to increase the Bulldogs' lead over the Mercer Bears. Gupton appeared to shout something at Mercer players during his spirited jog around the bases. Gupton's words seemed to target at least one player on the baseball diamond as well as the Mercer dugout. Gupton eventually touched home plate and celebrated with his Samford teammates. A visibly frustrated Mercer shortstop, Bradley Frye, attempted to follow Gupton and had to be held back by umpires. Mercer coaches also voiced their frustrations to the umpires. Mercer players then began leave the playing field in apparent protest. Several Mercer players had to be held back in the dugout. Southern Conference commissioner Michael Cross was in attendance for the game and was eventually seen talking with the umpires. Gupton and Frye were ejected from the game after a video review. Coaches were also thrown out, with Samford assistant Gil Walkes and Mercer pitching coach Tanner Gordon receiving ejections. Frye's mother was also shown the door after she was seen standing and jumping on top of the dugout moments after she learned of her son's ejection. Other Mercer fans were tossed out after they went onto the dugout roof. The game was delayed for approximately 25 minutes. Samford ultimately celebrated a 5-1 victory on Saturday. Purdue women's basketball adds 2025 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year
WEST LAFAYETTE ― Purdue women's basketball added more depth at guard when former UNC Greensboro freshman Nya Smith announced her commitment to the Boilermakers on Sunday afternoon. Smith made her announcement through her Instagram account. The soon-to-be sophomore helped the Spartans advance to the NCAA Tournament last season after finishing 25-7, beating Chattanooga 64-57 to capture the Southern Conference Tournament title. Advertisement UNC Greensboro entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 16 seed and lost to the JuJu Watkins-led USC Trojans, 71-25. Smith becomes the third Purdue addition from the transfer portal after former Arkansas standout Kiki Smith (no relation) joined Purdue on Saturday afternoon. A native of Roswell, Georgia, Smith averaged 10.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and was named the Southern Conference Sixth Woman of the Year and Freshman of the Year to end the 2024-25 season. It's been an active Easter weekend for Purdue with the addition of both Smith guards. Advertisement Nya and Kiki Smith are joined by Purdue's first transfer portal arrival, Taylor Feldman from Northern Arizona. Feldman averaged 16.4 points, 3.9 assists and three rebounds per game, including 40.9% from the field, 38.3% from 3-point range and 80.4% from the free throw line and was named All Big Sky Conference first team as a junior last season. The Boilermakers will also the return of Madison Layden-Zay, who starred from 2020-21 to 2023-24 before taking a year off last season. Layden-Zay is eligible to play a grad season having with the Boilermakers through COVID. Georgia lands second player from transfer portal
Georgia lands second player from transfer portal The Georgia Bulldogs have started getting aggressive on the transfer portal it has rewarded them. Former Wofford Terriers guard Justin Bailey has transferred to Georgia. Justin Bailey is transferring to his third team. Bailey originally went to South Carolina Upstate for two years before transferring to Wofford. At both schools, Bailey has established himself as a physical, aggressive defender who enjoys driving in the paint. Georgia could absolutely use that skill set, since Georgia lost departed starting Silas Demary Jr. to the transfer portal. Bailey averaged 9.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per games last season with Wofford, who won the Southern Conference (SoCon) tournament. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound guard helped Wofford make an NCAA Tournament appearance, but the No. 15 seed Terrier lost to the Tennessee Volunteers in the opening round. Bailey joins former California guard Jeremiah Wilkinson as Georgia's incoming transfers. This transfer portal class could be another gem for basketball coach Mike White. Last year, White acquired key depth pieces Tyrin Lawrence, Dakota Leffew, and De'Shayne Montgomery from the transfer portal. It remains to be seen who else Georgia lands in the portal, but Bailey is in line to compete for the starting point guard. The Bulldogs are still looking to fill out the depth of the team, though. They've lost Demary, Montgomery, Savo Drezgic, and RJ Godfrey to the transfer portal, and Lawrence and Leffew are out of eligibility. Star forward Asa Newell, who was Georgia's leading scorer also entered the NBA draft.
