Award winning farmer felicitated by District Collector for traditional paddy cultivation

The Hindu22-05-2025

Kanniyakumari District Collector R. Alagumeena felicitated Belin Gold, a farmer from Achankulam village in Agasteeswaram taluk for winning first place in the state level traditional paddy cultivation yield competition.
The felicitation took place at the farmers grievance redress meeting held at the district collectorate on Thursday.
It is noted that Mr. Gold was also awarded with 'Bharat Ratna Doctor MGR Traditional Paddy Varieties Conservation Award' and cash prize of ₹1 lakh , which was presented by M.R.K. Paneerselvam, Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, at an event held earlier this month in Chennai.
During the meeting the farmers raised concerns over the delay in the projects under the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and Railway departments involving the construction of culverts, bridges across water bodies. They urged the authorities to ensure the timely completion of these projects for the benefit of the farming community.
Vins Antro, from Kodayar Irrigation System Project Committee said that the petition had been submitted primarily involving the Pattinam canal (Pattinamkaal), where the NHAI is currently implementing a four way lane project, expected to be complete by June or July. However, Railways had not yet commenced their double track project in the same area. 'The projects undertaken by two different departments on different time periods will severely impact the farmers, as around 15, 000 acres of agricultural land are irrigated through Pattinam canal,' he added.
Farmers also submitted petitions to restore the Suchindram canal, Alanthurayar canal, and canal near the Vaigai pond in Aralvaimozhi. They also raised concerns about the heaving vehicles passing through Thovalai canal, which are damaging the weirs and the roads in the region.
At the meeting, the collector assured that steps would be taken to address the petitions promptly. She directed the officials to evict the encroachments from the water bodies and announced that 'Kuruvai' packaged project had been allocated for Kanniyakumari district, urging farmers to utilise it. At the meeting it was informed that the water would be released from Pechiparai dam on June 1 or 2 for irrigation purposes.

HC restrains NHAI from collecting fee in two toll plazas

Madurai: Madras high court on Tuesday restrained the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) from collecting toll fees in two toll plazas situated on the Madurai-Tuticorin national highway stretch, after taking into account the fact that the road was not maintained properly and saplings were not planted on both sides of the road. A division bench of justice S M Subramaniam and justice A D Maria Clete passed the order while disposing of a public interest litigation filed by V Balakrishnan, a retired Tangedco assistant executive engineer from Tuticorin district. The petitioner stated that the contract for the Madurai-Tuticorin highway was awarded in 2006 and the highway stretch was put to use in 2011. He stated that as per the contract, the contractor was to plant trees on both sides and on the centre median; however, the work was carried out partially. The contractor collected tolls from two toll plazas from the date of usage of the roads. But the contractor failed to maintain the road, and many portions of the road were not motorable due to lack of proper maintenance. He stated that NHAI remained a silent spectator of all the lapses and irregularities committed by the contractor without initiating any kind of action to fulfil the terms and conditions of the contract. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like ¿Cómo obtener un segundo ingreso invirtiendo $100 en AES CFD? PentyMedia Más información Undo Sensing the seriousness, the agreement was terminated in 2023. It is also seen from the RTI reply that about 563.83 crore are recoverable from the contractor for his failure to plant roadside avenues and maintain the roads. The petitioner stated that after taking over the road, NHAI continued to collect the tolls previously collected by the contractor. The action of the NHAI is totally baseless and illogical because it has not spent any money towards the construction of the road. The estimated project cost was 920 crore. However, the contractor collected 932.44 crore, without spending 563.83 crore towards maintenance and plantations. He stated that NHAI miserably and deliberately failed to take timely action against the contractor and allowed the contractor to continue with his violation and irregularity for more than 10 years, thereby causing a loss of 563.83 crore, besides causing inconvenience and suffering to the road users. The right to proper road connectivity is the fundamental right guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution. Road maintenance is the statutory duty of the authorities, and they ought to have followed it strictly. Hence, the petitioner moved court seeking a direction to the NHAI authorities to initiate action against the contractor and to plant saplings on both sides of the road and the centre median on the highway.

AMC moves to cancel land allotment to GST dept

SLUG: NON PAYMENT OF DUES Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) moved a proposal to cancel the allotment of a 6,495 sq m plot in Gota ward to the Gujarat govt's GST department for constructing the office of the Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The plot, valued at Rs 104.56 crore, was allotted last year. However, the proposal to revoke the allotment was moved because the GST department found the plot too expensive and did not make the payment for it for over a year. Subsequently, the AMC sought the standing committee's approval to revoke the allocation. The Standing Committee will review the cancellation proposal on June 5. In Jan 2024, the AMC standing committee approved the allocation of the commercial plot (final plot 172, TP Scheme 32) in Gota ward at Rs 1.61 lakh per sq m. Despite receiving notification, the GST department failed to pay Rs 104.56 crore for the land. In a separate matter, the standing committee approved on July 8, 2010, the allocation of a 1,945 sq m plot (final plot 617, TP Scheme 29) in Narayanpura to the Deendayal Port Authority for a guest house. Although the port paid Rs 2.72 crore, no construction commenced. The plot's current valuation ranges between Rs 35 to 40 crore. The port trust now wishes to surrender the plot, prompting a cancellation proposal to the AMC standing committee. Furthermore, the AMC transferred 20,958 sq m of service road land to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) a year ago. In Dec 2024, the AUDA Land Price and Fixing Committee established a rate of Rs 1 lakh per sq m. The civic body will collect Rs 209.58 crore for this land transfer, marking the largest such payment from the NHAI. The estate department will issue a demand notice, and a related proposal will be presented to the AMC Standing Committee.

Samruddhi Mahamarg: 76-km final stretch opens tomorrow; 701-km expressway now fully ready

The final phase of the Samruddhi Mahamarg — a 76-km stretch from Igatpuri in Nashik to Amane in Thane — is all set to be inaugurated on Thursday. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar will attend the inaugural ceremony at Igatpuri, making the most-ambitious expressway project by the state government fully operational. Although the final stretch will be opened on Thursday, motorists from Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai will have to wait for at least a year to easily access the Samruddhi Mahamarg as the Vadpe interchange linking the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and Samruddhi Mahamarg is still under construction. According to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the final stretch has been built at a cost of Rs 1,182 crore in a joint partnership with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and passes over the dangerous Kasara Ghat, providing a speedier and safe route for passengers travelling between Mumbai and Nagpur. The travel time between Igatpuri and Amane, which previously used to take more than 90 minutes through the zigzag ghat section, will now be halved to 30-40 minutes. The entire Nagpur-Thane trip will now take only eight hours, from the previous 16 hours. With the opening of the last stretch, the 701-km Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg connecting Nagpur to the doorstep of Mumbai will be completely opened to traffic. At present, 625 km of the corridor from Nagpur to Igatpuri is now operational. The final phase of the project was delayed for months by the unfinished section between Amane and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which is important for integrating the Samruddhi corridor with Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and the national highway network. With the NHAI now finishing this connector, officials said the integration is now complete. The Samruddhi Mahamarg, which starts in Nagpur, ends at Amane village near Bhiwandi, about 60 km from Mumbai. Access to the Samruddhi Mahamarg from Mumbai and its metropolitan area is currently limited somewhat as the Vadpe interchange linking the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and Samruddhi Mahamarg is under construction. Until this interchange opens, which will take up to a year from now, traffic from Mumbai, Thane or Navi Mumbai will have to use the expressway through a temporary access point close to Shangrila Resort near Bhiwandi on the Mumbai-Nashik Highway, according to MSRDC officials. In future, when the Vadpe interchange and Delhi-Mumbai Expressway section is opened, the Samruddhi Expressway will be easily accessible from places such as Kalyan, Dombivli, Badlapur, Vasai, Virar, Panvel and Navi Mumbai. Other interchange options from Badlapur and Kalyan are also in plans for ensuring easier connectivity. Besides, another expansion is underway to accommodate the increased traffic, which includes widening the 21.6 km segment of the Mumbai-Nashik Highway from Vadpe to Majiwada in Thane. The important route, now congested with commercial vehicles, is being widened from four to eight lanes. The new route will also offer faster travel for Shirdi pilgrims from Mumbai and Thane and quicker transport of farm produce from the districts that the expressway passes through to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
