‘I'll Never Fight There Again' Disgruntled UFC Fighter Slams Mexico

Forbes31-03-2025

The UFC probably shouldn't book Joe Pyfer to fight at Noche UFC in September. Pyfer was scheduled to face Kelvin Gastelum on Saturday in Mexico City, but he became ill the night before the fight and couldn't compete.
Based on what Pyfer described, he either got food poisoning or altitude sickness. In any case, he wasn't happy about missing his fight. The 28-year-old from Vineland, New Jersey, took to social media and threw a prejudiced tantrum aimed at the entire country of Mexico.
Red Corner MMA shared Pyfer's post.
To include the sentence, 'I don't care if it's offensive to you,' is unfortunate.
'I'll never go back to that country. F*** that country, I'll never fight again,' only added to the toxicity.
The fight between Pyfer and Gastelum is expected to be rescheduled soon, but I was being facetious even mentioning Noche UFC, which was announced and is scheduled for September 13 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Gastelum is Mexican, so it stands to reason he was set to be the fan favorite in the fight against Pyfer. After Pyfer's comments, it's safe to assume just about anyone the American middleweight fights would have the support of Mexican MMA fans.
Undefeated former UFC flyweight Muhammad Mokaev took Pyfer to task for his comments. He said: 'TBF every country is challenge and you gotta go out there and adapt. It's your own risk when you sign the contract but if you signed the stfu.'
Pyfer has earned the nickname 'Salty Joe,' and fans didn't hold back with their references to the nickname and criticisms for the fighter's comments.
One commenter wrote: 'Just let Salty Joe do what he's best at, being salty.'
A second commenter wrote: 'Facts! Pyfer is racist and full of excuses.'
A third commenter wrote: 'How can anyone be a fan of this guy?'
A fourth commenter wrote: 'So unlikable.'
I don't expect Pyfer to face any punishment for his rant. The UFC has allowed its fighters to exercise freedom of speech without consequence from the promotion. Bryce Mitchell spewed a wildly anti-Semitic concept on his podcast earlier this year, and Conor McGregor has repeatedly made negative comments about Dagestani people.
While many of us are fans of free speech, it seems safe to say there's a way to abuse the privilege, and Pyfer has seemingly done that. Aside from Pyfer's insensitive rant, the UFC Mexico show was strong. We saw four performance bonuses and some strong fights.
In case you missed it, here is a look at all of the results.
The Noche UFC 2025 announcement came during UFC Mexico. In case you missed it, here are the results.

Mexican national team changes hotels in Los Angeles due to safety concerns

The Mexican national soccer team will change hotels in Los Angeles ahead of their Gold Cup match on Saturday because of safety concerns amid the protests against immigration raids in the city, a team spokesman said Tuesday. Mexico will play its opening match in the regional tournament against the Dominican Republic at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The team had a hotel reserved in downtown Los Angeles but governing body CONCACAF has allowed for a change to an undetermined hotel, Mexican team spokesman Fernando Schwartz told The Associated Press. CONCACAF, which runs soccer in North America, Central America and the Caribbean, has not made an official announcement. The protests began Friday in downtown Los Angeles after federal immigration authorities arrested more than 40 people across the city. On Sunday, crowds blocked a major freeway and set self-driving cars on fire as police responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and flash-bang grenades. On Monday, President Donald Trump ordered another 2,000 National Guard troops along with 700 Marines to be sent to Los Angeles. Mexico coach Javier Aguirre was reluctant to talk about the protests at a news conference on Monday in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where the team is scheduled to play in a friendly match against Turkey on Tuesday. "I'm not going to talk about Los Angeles, I told you no, we are talking about sports here." Aguirre said. "I can't express myself right now. We have a match against Turkey, and I don't have any information. I know what we see on television. We're thousands of miles away, and I can't express myself." After the match against the Dominican Republic, Mexico will fly to Arlington, Texas, to play Suriname and then close out the first round of the tournament against Costa Rica in Las Vegas. Aljamain Sterling: Sean O'Malley won't get another 'layup' after UFC 316 loss

Aljamain Sterling: Sean O'Malley won't get another 'layup' after UFC 316 loss Aljamain Sterling thinks Sean O'Malley won't be getting any more favorable matchups from the UFC. O'Malley (18-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) suffered his second straight loss to bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC) when he was submitted in Saturday's UFC 316 main event. Sterling (24-5 MMA, 16-5 UFC) has been very vocal about O'Malley's road to the top, which saw him jump from a controversial win over Petr Yan at UFC 280, to a title fight against him at UFC 292. O'Malley knocked out Sterling to claim the bantamweight title. But now that O'Malley has lost to the champion two-straight times, Sterling says "The Suga Show" will have to face the top contenders at bantamweight, which may not be favorable stylistic matchups for him. "The UFC is probably not going to do him another layup favor in terms of stylistic matchup," Sterling said on his YouTube channel. "He's going to have to fight the toughest guys at this point. I'm curious to see what is he going to look like in his approach, what is he going to change, and will people look at his style now, and realize what I've been saying from before years ago: He's good, but there's a couple of things. His style is very good and catered to winning against guys who are stationary fighters, and they don't move a whole lot and predominantly not a grappler – and he looks like a world beater. "Now we've seen with some opposition and everyone kind of figuring him out, in the top five we know is a different ball game. Just like the Yan fight when he went from Pedro Munhoz to Yan. So, I'm curious to see how he's going to bounce back. Even if he loses the next one, will it be a good performance? Because if he stays the same, a lot of people realize he's good, but if you do X, Y and Z like Mario Bautista, those are tough fights for you. Kyler Phillips, those are tough fights for you. Merab, Umar (Nurmagomedov), those are tough fights. Even a Petr Yan, who's a little bit more stationary, but once he gets moving and starts putting those hands on you, it's a tougher fight for him." Sterling, who initially threw his own name in the hat, had a few suggestions of who the UFC could match O'Malley up with next. "The only person I can think of stylistically which would be a relatively favorable fight for him would be a guy like Patchy Mix," Sterling continued. "Maybe Aiemann Zahabi because Aiemann's kind of just in the pocket with you. Those would be some good stylistic fights for him. Give him Song Yadong."
