Panthers' Sam Reinhart day-to-day, uncertain for Game 4

Reuters25-05-2025

May 25 - The availability of Florida Panthers forward Sam Reinhart remains in question for Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals on Monday against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Panthers coach Paul Maurice told reporters Sunday that Reinhart has not been cleared to return to game action after sustaining a lower-body injury during the first period of Florida's 5-0 win in Game 2 on Thursday.
Reinhart sat out Saturday's 6-2 win for the Panthers, who hold a commanding 3-0 lead the best-of-seven series.
Maurice said a decision on Reinhart's status will be made on Monday morning, hours before Game 4 in Sunrise, Fla.
"He is not cleared, but he hasn't been ruled out either," Maurice said Sunday. "I know that sounds a little ambiguous, but it's not. That's exactly where he's at.
"We are hopeful that it's not long term, and I mean he is day-to-day and I don't think it's going to move out that way. He still has to get back on the ice. There are some steps here."
Jesper Boqvist filled in admirably for Reinhart, scoring the go-ahead goal on a breakaway at 1:29 of the third period on Saturday. He added two assists later in the period.
Reinhart, 29, recorded team-leading totals in goals (39) and points (81) in 79 games this season and is a finalist for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, awarded to the NHL's best defensive forward.
He has 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in 14 games in the playoffs.

Stick review: Owen Wilson's golfer charms, but is this the ‘new Ted Lasso'?

Stick, shtick and plenty of heart. Apple TV+ is hoping this feelgood sports comedy is the new Ted Lasso, and although it might not be everyone's (tin) cup of tea, there's a lot to like about this show. Let's start with the stick; that's a golf club if you hadn't already guessed, and although there's plenty of green-side chat and birdies, the good news is you don't need to like or understand the sport to enjoy the show (although it probably helps). Our story centres on an ageing former golf pro, Pryce Cahill (Owen Wilson). He was once the next big thing on tour before spectacularly crashing and burning. Twenty or so years later, he's still haunted by his failure, unsuccessfully trying to save his marriage to Amber-Linn (Judy Greer), drinking a lot and working in a golf shop recommending overpriced clubs to make as much commission as possible. Pryce just can't catch a break — that is, until he spots the troubled teenager Santi Wheeler (Peter Dager) hitting colossal drives after sneaking on to the local range and sees the potential to make him a star. Like most things in Pryce's life, this isn't going to be easy, and Santi (for reasons that will become clear as the show goes on) is incredibly resistant to help with his golf and taking this big risk. However, when his mother, Elena (Mariana Treviño), realises this could be a chance to make enough money for the family to change their lives, she reluctantly agrees to go on tour in a crowded camper van owned and driven by Pryce's old caddy, Mitts (Marc Maron). So begins a very pleasing journey of discovery: a mentor who's all-in on a long shot and his cantankerous mate; a mother who knows what she wants and a hot-headed raw talent with a lot of baggage — what could possibly go wrong? • Why Ted Lasso is the best show about football That leads me to the elephant in the room, the shtick. Many people like Wilson's thing. That mild Texas drawl, loveable loser, laid-back demeanour and anything-goes easy charm. And well, some don't. I'm in the former camp and therefore the prospect of ten episodes of a Wilson-powered vehicle fills my heart with happiness — but for those who wish they'd never seen You, Me and Dupree or Wedding Crashers, to use the golfing parlance, now's the time to pick up and head for the 19th hole. And so if you're not put off by golf or Wilson, let us talk about the real star of the show: the heart. Whereas 'cooler' comedy tends to focus on the edgy and the anxiety-provoking, this is a show happy to settle in with its feelings, and there are plenty of them. From the rage against the machine relationship between youngsters Santi and the equally disenfranchised country club waitress Zero (Lilli Kay) and the quirky dynamic between middle-aged Elena and Mitts, there's a lot going on. And that's before we throw in Pryce's complicated relationships with everyone, which drive the story along at a pace. Like Ted Lasso, this is a story that is unafraid to take its flawed characters on an emotionally charged comedic flight over fairway and rough, through the woods and into bunkers, before leaving them all a putt at happiness. If you're looking for a new comedy, it's worth a shot.★★★★☆ Love TV? Orioles take down Mariners for 4th straight win

June 4 - Tomoyuki Sugano pitched seven strong innings as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the host Seattle Mariners 5-1 on Tuesday in the opener of a three-game series. Colton Cowser homered for Baltimore, which won its fourth consecutive game and prevailed for the seventh time in its past nine. Rowdy Tellez went deep for the Mariners, who fell a half-game behind the Houston Astros in the American League West. Sugano (5-3), a right-hander, allowed one run on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts. The only mistake Sugano made came with two outs in the second inning, when Tellez launched a 1-0 curveball that stayed over the middle of the plate 404 feet off the windows of Hit It Here Cafe on the second deck in right field at T-Mobile Park to tie the score at 1-1. The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the first as Adley Rutschman, Gunnar Henderson and Ryan O'Hearn singled with one out to load the bases and Ramon Urias lifted a sacrifice fly to right field. Baltimore regained the lead in similar fashion in the fifth as Rutschman, Henderson and O'Hearn all singled, the latter bringing home the run. The inning ended with a scare as Urias lined a ball right back at the face of Mariners starter George Kirby (0-3). The righty got his pitching hand up to slightly deflect the ball before it hit him in the mouth. The ball ricocheted to first baseman Tellez, who stepped on the bag to end the inning. Kirby was bleeding from the mouth as he walked off the field. Kirby, making just his third start after beginning the season on the injured list with inflammation in his right shoulder, went five innings and gave up two runs on eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Cowser led off the sixth with a drive into the Mariners' bullpen in left-center off Eduard Bazardo to make it 3-1. The Orioles added a pair of insurance runs off Collin Snider in the ninth. Coby Mayo led off with a single and Heston Kjerstad lined an RBI double to right. With one out, Jackson Holliday lined a single to center to plate the game's final run. --Field Level Media

MLB roundup: Rockies top Marlins for first series win

June 4 - Hunter Goodman hit a one-out, solo home run in the eighth inning, and the visiting Colorado Rockies beat the Miami Marlins 3-2 on Tuesday night to clinch their first series victory of this season. The Rockies had lost all 19 series this season -- 10 on the road -- and a big-league record 22 in a row dating back to 2024. Colorado has won two straight games for just the second time in 2025 and can earn its first series sweep Thursday afternoon. Tyler Freeman had three hits for the Rockies, Goodman and Jordan Beck finished with two hits apiece and Victor Vodnik (1-1) got the victory with 1 1/3 innings of relief. Jesus Sanchez and Kyle Stowers had two hits apiece for Miami, which has dropped three in a row. The game was tied after seven innings and Marlins reliever Anthony Bender (1-4) struck out Thairo Estrada leading off the eighth. Goodman then homered to left to give Colorado the lead. Seth Halvorsen got the final three outs for his third save. Rays 5, Rangers 1 Drew Rasmussen extended his scoreless innings streak to 23 after striking out eight batters over five frames, fueling host Tampa Bay over Texas. Rasmussen (5-4) recorded his fourth straight win after allowing just one hit: Jake Burger's infield single to lead off the third inning. Tampa Bay's Junior Caminero and Kameron Misner hit solo homers and Jake Mangum had an RBI single. Astros 3, Pirates 0 Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker homered as Lance McCullers Jr. outdueled Paul Skenes, helping Houston defeat host Pittsburgh. McCullers (1-1) pitched six innings, allowing two hits. Having returned last month from a two-year injury absence following flexor tendon surgery, McCullers registered his first victory since Sept. 21, 2022. The Astros posted their second consecutive shutout and sixth of the season. The Pirates wasted a quality outing in which Skenes (4-6) allowed one run on three hits over eight innings. Skenes struck out eight but yielded a go-ahead solo home run in the seventh to Walker. Yankees 3, Guardians 2 Jazz Chisholm Jr. snapped a tie by homering on the first pitch of the seventh inning to help Carlos Rodon get his seventh straight victory as New York hung on to beat visiting Cleveland. Activated from the injured list after missing 28 games with an oblique injury, Chisholm had New York's first hit off Cleveland's Tanner Bibee (4-6) in the fifth before snapping a 1-1 tie in the seventh with his eighth homer this season. Volpe followed with his seventh homer. Rodon allowed one run on five hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings. Bibee allowed three runs on four hits in 6 1/3 innings. The right-hander dropped to 1-4 in his past five outings. Ramirez had two hits to extend his on-base streak to 29 games. Cubs 8, Nationals 3 Michael Busch finished a double shy of the cycle and drove in three runs to pace visiting Chicago to the win over Washington. Nico Hoerner added a two-run single and Dansby Swanson swatted two sacrifice flies for the Cubs, who won for the 13th time in 16 games. Starter Cade Horton (3-0) gave up three runs and six hits over 5 1/3 innings. Luis Garcia Jr. posted three hits for the Nationals while CJ Abrams went 1-for-4 with a run, RBI and stolen base. Starter Trevor Williams (3-6) lasted just 4 1/3 innings as he surrendered five runs on five hits. Reds 4, Brewers 2 Pinch hitter Connor Joe drove in the go-ahead run with a seventh-inning sacrifice fly as host Cincinnati edged Milwaukee. Reds center fielder TJ Friedl robbed pinch hitter Jake Bauers of a game-tying home run for the final out when he leaped over the wall and brought the ball back. Tyler Stephenson and Will Benson homered, and Matt McLain had a key double in the Reds' seventh-inning rally. Christian Yelich extended his hitting streak to 10 games for the Brewers, who saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end. Sal Frelick belted his fourth homer of the season. Diamondbacks 8, Braves 3 Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll both hit a pair of home runs and starting pitcher Zac Gallen pitched seven strong innings to help visiting Arizona beat Atlanta. Arizona evened the season series at 2-2 and has won two straight. Marte went 3-for-3 with two walks, three RBIs and lifted his batting average to .294. Marte has reached base safely in a season-best 16 games, a streak that includes seven homers and 11 RBIs. Carroll went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Gallen (4-7) allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits. Spencer Strider (0-4) pitched five innings and allowed five runs on six hits -- three of them home runs. Royals 10, Cardinals 7 Bobby Witt Jr. had a homer and four RBIs as visiting Kansas City rallied past St. Louis. Vinny Pasquantino and Maikel Garcia each drove in two runs for the Royals, who erased a 7-2 deficit. Jonathan India went 3-for-5 with three runs and Nick Loftin hit a solo homer. Royals starter Michael Lorenzen allowed seven runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings. Nolan Gorman and Alec Burleson hit two-run homers for the Cardinals, who have lost three of their last four games. Andre Pallante allowed seven runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. Phillies 8, Blue Jays 3 Cristopher Sanchez pitched six solid innings and Trea Turner hit two home runs as visiting Philadelphia defeated Toronto. Turner had three hits and three RBIs, Bryce Harper also homered and Alec Bohm collected four hits for the Phillies, who ended a four-game losing streak by taking the opener of a three-game series. Harper had missed the five previous games with a bruised right elbow. Addison Barger homered for the fourth straight game, a two-run blast, and Davis Schneider added a solo shot for the Blue Jays, who had their five-game winning streak end. Angels 4, Red Sox 3 (10 innings) Zach Neto scored on Taylor Ward's double-play grounder with the bases loaded and none out in the 10th inning to help visiting Los Angeles defeat Boston. Reid Detmers held the Red Sox scoreless in the bottom of the 10th to collect his first career save. He struck out two of three batters he faced. Yusei Kikuchi pitched the first five-plus innings for the Angels. He surrendered three runs on eight hits. The Red Sox received a two-run homer from Ceddanne Rafaela, his fifth long ball of the season. Rafaela had three hits in the loss, and teammate Jarren Duran collected two hits and an RBI. White Sox 8, Tigers 1 Michael A. Taylor smacked a three-run home run and Shane Smith pitched sharply into the sixth inning, boosting Chicago past visiting Detroit. Taylor finished with four RBIs while Austin Slater added a pair of hits for the White Sox, including a two-run double. Smith (2-3) permitted three hits in 5 1/3 scoreless innings. Tigers reliever Brant Hurter (2-1) allowed one run, which was unearned, in two innings. Detroit avoided a shutout on Dillon Dingler's RBI double in the seventh inning. --Field Level Media
