Apple might allow certain iPhone users replace Siri as their default assistant
Many iPhone users are not fond of Siri. Even though Apple created the virtual personal assistant when it launched Siri with the iPhone 4s in 2011, Apple soon lost the lead to Google Assistant and Amazon's Alexa. Luckily, if you have an iPhone that runs Apple Intelligence, if you ask Siri a question it can't answer, the virtual assistant will ask if you want ChatGPT to answer or if you would prefer to search the web. Even if you don't have an iPhone with Apple Intelligence , you can still ask Google to help if Siri can't answer a query to your satisfaction. For example, let's say that you want to know the release date of the first iPhone. Ask Siri the question, and she responds with a trio of excerpts from websites, although all you wanted was a date. So you can tap the "Search Google" chip, and it will show the release date of June 29, 2007. If you don't mind reducing your use of Siri to setting alarms and timers, in the App Store, you can install the Google Assistant app. This way, you can ask Google Assistant your more complex queries. These days, you can use ChatGPT or Gemini as your assistant, although they also won't be able to set timers or alarms. You can find both AI apps in the App Store (ChatGPT,Gemini). According to a new report from Bloomberg, the EU might force Apple to allow iPhone users to select their own default assistant, which could include ChatGPT and Gemini as possible options.

Since Apple's actions would be in response to the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA) legislation, only those iPhone users in EU countries would have this option. But as we pointed out above, one doesn't have to make an alternative assistant a default choice in order to use it. Personally, when it comes to information I need to satisfy my own curiosity or to win a bet, I find the Large Language Models like the aforementioned ChatGPT and Gemini to provide better responses than Siri. Apple's request for a stay on a US court's ruling has been denied, so it has to immediately stop charging developers for payments made outside of the App Store. The company filed an emergency motion last month seeking a stay on a ruling in April, which found Apple in "willful violation" of a 2021 injunction that barred it from forcing anticompetitive pricing. It's also filed an appeal against that ruling, which is yet to be finalized, so things could still change in the future. Apple's stay is denied by the 9th Circuit Court. The company also has to eliminate the 'scare screens' it shows users before letting them use third-party payment providers for iOS apps. Spotify and Amazon are already making changes to their apps to reflect the new situation, so now you can pay for your purchases and subscriptions outside of the App Store without any 'Apple Tax'.

Apple reportedly delays the release of two AI-enhanced apps until iOS 27
We already have a good idea of what to expect from Apple this Monday when WWDC's Keynote kicks off at 10 am PDT (1 pm EDT). We also have a good idea of what not to expect Apple to unveil after pushing back the debut of "personal" Siri. You might remember the ad that showed actress Bella Ramsey panicking because she couldn't remember the name of this boy she met at a cafe a few months before. She asked Siri and the digital assistant went through her texts, emails, and other apps to get the name. Because of the delay that is pushing back the release of personal Siri, Apple pulled the ad . At this stage, it is hard to know exactly when "Personal" Siri and more "AI" based features will be coming to Apple's digital assistant. All indications point to a release of these features for Siri sometime in middle-to-late 2026. Apple also had to delay new features that would allow Siri to understand what was on your display and use that knowledge to respond to queries. The ability to use Siri to control apps and in-app features has also been put off by Apple. This would allow Siri to work the same way as generative AI apps such as ChatGPT and Gemini. Currently, on iPhone models running Apple Intelligence , Siri will pass questions that it can't answer over to ChatGPT after asking you first if that is okay. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, AI-enhanced versions of the Calendar app and the Health app will not be mentioned at WWDC this year. Both apps will be pushed back to iOS 27 (still feels weird to say, right?). While there will be smaller changes made for both apps this year, the bulk of the updates will come in 2026 in iOS 27 which has been given the codename of Buttercup (which no doubt makes you think of the 1968 hit "Build Me Up Buttercup" by the Foundations). The nickname for macOS 27, also expected to be released next year, is Honeycrisp.

Did you know that this month is National Safety Month in the U.S.? I was so excited hearing this that I celebrated by jumping up and down and in the process I twisted my ankle and then fell down a flight of stairs breaking several bones. No, that really didn't happen, but if it did, I would hope to have my rejuvenated Pixel 6 Pro beside me. That's because Pixel handsets have certain safety features that help keep users safe (which is what safety features are for, of course). The first feature is one that is only available on Pixel 9 series devices. Let's say you and your Pixel 9 are driving in an area where there is no cellular coverage but you need help with your car. Instead of walking miles to civilization, you can use Satellite SOS which will allow you to "text emergency services, request roadside assistance, message friends and family, and share your location." Pixel phones and Pixel watches (paired with a Pixel 9 handset) offer Scam Detection. This is an exciting and protective feature because it scans in real time the pattern of a call that you are on or a text message that you are in the middle of. With help from AI, patterns of the call or text are analyzed and if they seem suspicious, the user is alerted. To activate Scam detection, open the Phone by Google app and tap the three-dot icon in the upper right corner. Tap on Settings and look for Scam Detection. Tap on it and toggle the feature on. This feature is available for Pixel 9 users in the U.S. and those with a Pixel 6 and later (including the Pixel 8 line) with the Phone by Google beta installed. You can check to see if you're on the beta by going to Settings > Apps > See all xxx apps. Scroll down to Phone and go tot he bottom of the page. You should see the version number followed by "publicbeta." Scam Detection is a great feature that scans calls and texts for patterns used by scammers. | Image credit-PhoneArena On Pixel 3 watches, the FDA approved Loss of Pulse Detection feature will prompt a call to emergency services and if you are unresponsive, it will go ahead and make the call. If you find yourself involved in a severe accident while driving a car or riding in one as a passenger, Pixel phones and watches will help you connect with emergency services. You will get a few seconds to respond to a prompt and should you be unresponsive, the feature will call emergency services and pass along your location. In the course of a day, you might come face-to-face with a weather emergency, or an emergency that threatens the safety of the public (the latter seems to occur more often than we'd like). Along with AMBER alerts, you can be notified of these activities by enabling Wireless Emergency Alerts on your Pixel device. While these features come to light during National Security Month, they are available on compatible Pixel devices throughout the entire year.
