Cringe 'Horns Down' recruiting pic by Sooners coach Brent Venables blasted on social media
Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables puts the 'horns down' with ATH Braxton Lindsey👀https://t.co/PBnquSePWi pic.twitter.com/DlWHcKOm63 — On3 Recruits (@On3Recruits) June 9, 2025
The rivalry between the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners will always be heated. Just look at last week in the Women's College World Series. Obviously, that rivalry extends to the recruiting trail. But a new picture of OU coach Brent Venables has taken things to a new level.
Venables posed with recruit ATH Braxton Lindsey, which isn't the odd part. Many coaches, including Texas coach Steve Sarkisian, pose with recruits that are on campus. But Venables and Lindsey did the 'Horns Down' hand sign and the Sooners coach has, let's just say, an odd look on his face.
Longhorns fans aren't fond of 'Horns Down' but many have embraced the signal as living "rent free" in the heads of Texas' rivals. Many feel it's actually embarrassing to continue to do it. That said, from the point of view of rivals like OU, Arkansas and A&M, it is basically way to shoot the middle finger at UT without being "obscene."
But in some situations, it borders on "cringe," and Venables' pic has certainly received ridicule on social media.

I wonder why coach Sark doesn't take cornball photos with recruits like this. pic.twitter.com/StxG3nZgv3 — longhorn4life🤘🏿🖕🏿 (@Longhorn_979tx) June 8, 2025
More fingers in those horns down than points scored in 2/3 games vs Texas https://t.co/wHYxBJqBZa — J.K. Salinas (@JKSalinas_11) June 9, 2025
I've got no problem with horns down but it's overused. Ok, A&M fans make it their whole personality. https://t.co/i1iGLBQjOI — Cole (@Cole___2000) June 9, 2025
If Texas went on a 10-game winning streak over Oklahoma, would the Sooners still do the Horns Down in every photo with great obsession?
What would/could kill it as their unofficial hand sign? — Geoff Ketchum (@gkketch) June 9, 2025

Am I the only one who finds this corny? https://t.co/tCO6Nckp3U — Red Raider Man🌵 (@redraiderman1) June 9, 2025

Ex-Ohio State Coach Delivers Verdict on Arch Manning's Reported $6.5 Million NIL Valuation

Ex-Ohio State Coach Delivers Verdict on Arch Manning's Reported $6.5 Million NIL Valuation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The NIL deals being signed by college athletes continue to climb, and in most cases, it's not about raw talent, but rather about players with high visibility who have built up a brand. Advertisement One such example is Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning, who hasn't yet made a significant impact on the field, but with his family's pedigree, everyone already knows his name and expects a lot from this 21-year-old. During a recent episode of the "Bobby Carpenter Show," Anthony Schlegel, who has had two stints with the Ohio State Buckeyes, his alma mater, as an assistant strength and conditioning coach, predicted Manning would have to lead the nation in NIL valuations. "People that were returning that would require the dollar amount, Arch Manning would be that guy," said Carpenter as he was trying to recall the best players in the sport. Schlegel and Carpenter were reviewing a top 10 list of college football players and discussing how Manning was ranked at No. 1 with a $6.5 million valuation. Carpenter, another Ohio State alumnus who played for the Buckeyes from 2002 to 2005, pointed out Manning's NIL total comes from endorsements only, not from Texas' boosters. Texas is projected to have spent somewhere between $35 and $40 million on NIL deals, according to Kirk Bohls of the Houston Chronicle. In his report, Bohls quoted a source that believes these years of big spending won't last, even among the nation's best programs. 'It's just unsustainable,' the source said via Bohls. Texas Longhorns land commitment from four-star 2026 DT Corey Wells The Texas Longhorns have received their second commitment from a defensive tackle in three days. Over the weekend, Dylan Berymon of Louisiana committed to the Horns. On Monday, Mississippi prospect Corey Wells picked Texas over Auburn and Ole Miss. A position of need, Steve Sarkisian hadn't had a DT commit to Texas in the 2026 cycle before Saturday. Now Sark has two four-star prospects pledged. Wells made official visits to Texas, Ole Miss and Auburn. He has cancelled a scheduled visit Mississippi State on June 20. The 6-5, 290-pound Wells is ranked No. 291 in the On3 Industry Rankings. He becomes Texas' 12th commitment in the 2026 recruiting cycle. 'I'll get developed here. I know they will take real good care of me, and I'll have a chance to make it to that next level—the NFL. That is where I want to be,' Wells told On3. The Petal, MS native told 'Texas, I love it here. It's big in Texas, I'm not going to lie. I love the players, the coaches, the culture. The culture is going to be good.' Wells said the highlight of his Texas visit was meeting the people inside the program. 'The coaches. Just the players, too,' Wells said. 'It's good people around here.' Follow us on X (formerly Twitter) at @LonghornsWire.

Arch Manning Given High Expectations in SEC Preseason Rankings

Arch Manning Given High Expectations in SEC Preseason Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2025 college football season is among us, and thus is the start of the long-awaited Arch Manning era for the Texas Longhorns. Advertisement After patiently waiting for almost three years since his commitment, Longhorns faithful finally get to see him as the full-time starting quarterback. There were glimpses of his electric play last season, throwing for 939 yards and nine touchdowns, as well as 104 rushing yards to go along with four rushing scores, he will finally be their starter. Heading into a season full of promise, Josh Pate of CBS Sports ranked Manning as the No. 2 quarterback in the SEC, just behind Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway. Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning takes the field before his team's College Football Playoff game against the Clemson Tigers at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Dec. 21, Miron-Imagn Images The two potential high NFL Draft picks take the top two in no surprise, and both are heading into similar roles as 2025 kicks off. For Lagway, he entered the scene after then starting quarterback Graham Mertz tore his ACL. Advertisement Manning's was due to Quinn Ewers sustaining an oblique injury, that was later reported to be torn after the season concluded. Now, both quarterbacks get to prove everyone right as they look to be the faces of not just the SEC, but of all of college football. Manning may have a slight edge, mainly due to the roster discrepancy between the two schools. Texas is coming off a College Football Playoff semi-final appearance, as well as securing the No. 1 recruiting class in the country for 2025. Florida, however, finished with an 8-5 record, including a slaughter against Texas where they defeated the Gators 49-17. They do have the No. 10 recruiting class for 2025, and can build off that and Lagway's added experience. Advertisement The SEC is going to be once again a battle, and while these two quarterbacks may lead the way, there are a number of players eager to jump the ranks and add more competition for Manning and Lagway.
