G7 Leaders Urged to Abandon Net Zero and Climate-Aligned Finance says Friends of Science

Yahoo20 hours ago

At the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, Friends of Science Society urges world leaders to abandon Net Zero and climate-aligned finance goals, citing Vaclav Smil's new book on the impossibility of Net Zero. Retired energy economist, Robert Lyman, has issued several reports questioning Prime Minister Carney's energy superpower plans, which show that climate policies are strangling the Canadian economy.
CALGARY, AB, June 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on the economic and security goals outlined in Prime Minister Mark Carney's G7 press release of June 07, 2025, Friends of Science Society urges world leaders to abandon Net Zero and climate-aligned finance goals. Renowned energy author Vaclav Smil's latest book "2050. Pourquoi un monde sans carbone est presque impossible" [translation: "2050. Why a carbon-free world is almost impossible."] makes the case that such goals are extremely unlikely. Smil's key points are summarized in French and English in this post on "Science, Climat et Energie." Professors Happer and Lindzen show, in this new report, that carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases are not driving global warming; expensive efforts to reduce these gases will lead to deindustrialization, poverty and famine worldwide. As noted in this CLINTEL report which cites Obama's former science advisor, the 2 degree Celsius (or 1.5 °C) Paris Agreement target was made up; it is not a product of science, thus compliance with the agreement will not provide "climate insurance" from extreme weather or wildfires; the objective is unaffordable and unnecessary.
Friends of Science Society has issued an Open Letter to the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions in Canada, explaining that Net Zero targets are unattainable and why. The letter challenges the push for the Climate-Aligned Finance Act (CAFA) "…would put such organizations in the position of acting in a fraudulent manner, as no amount of financial effort can make Net Zero a reality; and society will need to use fossil fuels for decades to come." CAFA is also presently promoted by Catherine McKenna and her "Women Leading on Climate" group.
Prime Minister Carney has raised Canadian expectations of Canada becoming an energy superpower overnight leading to a bold economic recovery, but the likelihood of these propositions are questioned by Robert Lyman in two new reports, titled: "Canada's Infrastructure Selection Criteria – Deciphering The Rhetoric," and "Energy Superpower Vs. Net-Zero? Don't Jump!" Robert Lyman, is a retired energy economist who for 27 years served in the Canadian government as an advisor and manager on energy, environment and transportation issues and has written extensively on these issues since that time.
As discussed in Lyman's "Deciphering the Rhetoric," Premier Tim Houston of Nova Scotia, Canada has proposed "Wind West," a massive 66-Gigawatt offshore wind farm, which he claims could provide 27% of Canada's electrical generation needs. "Deciphering the Rhetoric" explains why this proposal is uneconomic and would have the potential to cause national blackouts. On April 28, 2025, Spain and Portugal both experienced national blackouts, primarily due to far too great a ratio of renewables on the grid, versus more stable frequency control which comes from conventional inertial, dispatchable power.
Though the Pathways Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) has been highlighted by both Prime Minister Carney and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson as a possible project of national importance, Robert Lyman's 2019 report "The Carbon Capture and Storage Trap – for Taxpayers" is a cautionary tale. Friends of Science Society's "Getting to Net Zero" in Canada shows the Canada Energy Regulator's proposals for applying CCUS to reach Net Zero are unrealistic: video explainer.
Friends of Science Society expresses concerns that the push for Net Zero is simply a mirage to foist Article 6 carbon trading and so-called "Nature-based Climate Solutions" on corporations, and ultimately consumers, as outlined in this Western Standard report, "But, while many net-zero bankers see this as a gold mine, energy analyst Anas Alhajji calls carbon accounting the 'Mother of all Enrons.'"
Canada's Curious Climate Connection with Europe is a Friends of Science video explainer that offers insights, pros and cons, into suggestions that Canada should join the EU. To achieve global security and prosperity, G7 attendees should abandon Net Zero, embrace conventional energy and reject Climate-Aligned Finance, says Friends of Science.

Starmer and Trump call for ‘diplomacy and dialogue' in Israel and Iran conflict

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump have agreed the mounting conflict between Iran and Israel should be resolved by 'diplomacy and dialogue'. The two leaders spoke on Friday evening, as western nations began a diplomatic flurry to calm the burgeoning conflict, which started with early morning Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear bases. Sir Keir earlier urged his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu to de-escalate and work towards a 'diplomatic resolution'. David Lammy, the Foreign Secretary, meanwhile warned the Middle East is facing a 'moment of grave peril', after he spoke to Iran's foreign minister and called for calm. Earlier calls from the PM, as well as France's Emmanuel Macron and Germany's Friedrich Merz, for restraint appeared fruitless, as a fresh wave of strikes hit Tehran and other targets across Iran on Friday evening. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, vowed revenge, and his country launched hundreds of ballistic missiles at Israel in a retaliatory attack. Air raid sirens were sounded across Israel and its citizens were ordered to move into bomb shelters, while plumes of smoke could be seen rising in central Tel Aviv. In London, the Prime Minister convened a Cobra meeting of high level ministers and officials to discuss the situation in the Middle East. Warren Stephens, the US ambassador to the UK, was also seen outside the Cabinet Office in Whitehall after the meeting on Friday afternoon. A Downing Street spokeswoman said Sir Keir and Mr Trump 'discussed the military action in the Middle East overnight and agreed on the importance of diplomacy and dialogue' when they spoke on the phone. She added: 'Updating on his conversations with partners today, the Prime Minister reiterated the UK's grave concerns about Iran's nuclear programmes. 'The leaders looked forward to speaking again at the G7 in Canada next week.' Both the UK and the US have insisted they were not involved in the Israeli strikes and that Israel acted unilaterally. Foreign Secretary Mr Lammy would not say whether the Government had been forewarned of the action. Tzipi Hotovely, Israel's ambassador to the UK told Sky News the first time the her country discussed the strikes with the UK was at midday on Friday. She also told the broadcaster: 'The aim is to make sure Iran won't have nuclear capabilities. This is why all our targets are military targets. This is why we're attacking the nuclear sites. 'This is not a plan that was created in one night. This is a plan being created in many years from understanding the levels of danger.' Among the sites hit by Israel's strikes are several of Iran's main nuclear sites, as well as missile factories. Hossein Salami, the leader of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was also reportedly killed in the initial attacks. Mr Netanyahu addressed people of Iran in a video on Friday night, insisting his quarrel was with the Iranian ruling regime. 'In the past 24 hours, we have taken out top military commanders, senior nuclear scientists, the Islamic regime's most significant enrichment facility and a large portion of its ballistic missile arsenal,' he said. 'More is on the way' in Israel's operation, the Israeli PM added. Tensions between Israel, the US and Iran have escalated in recent weeks, amid negotiations over the Iran nuclear deal, which is aimed at preventing the country from developing nuclear weapons. Mr Trump had suggested some sort of attack by America or the Israelis could happen if negotiators failed to reach a deal over the advancing nuclear programme.

Business Lookahead: Eyes on the Middle East

STORY: From tensions escalating in the Middle East to the G7 leaders meeting in Canada, these are the stories to watch in business and finance in the coming week. :: Middle East tensions :: Tehran, Iran Another of the major geopolitical tail risks investors have long been worried about has just become a reality with Israel and Iran. The initial reaction has been a spike in oil prices, a drop in stocks, and a safe-haven rally spanning gold to government bonds. Markets will be closely following how the situation unfolds and what the world's top powers do in the coming days. :: Fed focus The U.S. central bank is expected to hold rates steady on Wednesday. It will also offer projections on monetary policy and the economy for the first time since March. Tuesday's May retail sales numbers, meanwhile, could show how tariffs may be affecting consumer spending. There will also be a flurry of interest rate decisions in Europe. Central bank meetings are scheduled in Sweden, Switzerland, Norway and the UK. :: Bank of Japan The Bank of Japan kicks off its two-day policy meeting on Monday. Investors are seeking guidance on the BOJ's rate trajectory and bond tapering plans. The BOJ has vowed to keep raising rates if underlying inflation approaches its 2% target. :: G7 meeting Geopolitics, trade and much more will be on the table when the Group of Seven summit in Alberta, Canada, kicks off on June 15. Japan, for one, hopes for a trade agreement on the sidelines. And some suspect the EU could accept a 10% U.S. tariff with no retaliation for greater U.S. commitments to NATO and Ukraine. And host Canada, keen to diversify trade away from the U.S., has invited India's Narendra Modi to attend, after bilateral relations soured in recent years. UN conference on Palestinian state postponed because of Middle East tensions

PARIS (AP) — A top-level U.N. conference on a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians scheduled for next week has been postponed amid surging tensions in the Middle East, French President Emmanuel Macron said Friday. France and Saudi Arabia were due to co-chair the conference hosted by the U.N. General Assembly in New York on June 17-20, and Macron had been among leaders scheduled to attend. The Palestinian Authority hoped the conference would revive the long-defunct peace process. Macron expressed his 'determination to recognize the state of Palestine' at some point, despite the postponement. France has pushed for a broader movement toward recognizing a Palestinian state in parallel with recognition of Israel and its right to defend itself. After Israel's strikes on Iran on Friday, Macron said that France's military forces around the Middle East are ready to help protect partners in the region, including Israel, but wouldn't take part in any attacks on Iran. Macron told reporters that the two-state conference was postponed for logistical and security reasons, and because some Palestinian representatives couldn't come to the event. He insisted that it would be held 'as soon as possible' and that he was in discussion with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman about a new date. 'The aim is a demilitarized Palestinian state recognizing the existence and the security of Israel,' Macron said. Any such state would exclude any Hamas leaders, he said. Macron said that the Israel-Iran conflict, the war in Gaza and the situation for Palestinians around the region are all 'interlinked.' Macron spoke on Friday with 10 world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, about the Israeli strikes on Iran and consequences. One of the aims at the U.N. conference was to increase the number of countries recognizing Palestinian territories as an independent state. So far, more than 145 of the 193 U.N. member nations have done so. The Palestinians view their state as encompassing Gaza and the West Bank with east Jerusalem as the capital. Netanyahu has rejected the creation of a Palestinian state, and Israel refused to participate in the conference.
