KUALA LUMPUR: The days of errant bus drivers are numbered with a database containing their information, including past criminal records, being compiled for the reference of prospective employers.
To be developed by the Land Transport Agency, the database will include information on blacklisted drivers as well as the number of traffic offences they have committed.
Bus operators will have better insight into their prospective employees with the database being mooted by the Transport Ministry.
'Currently, there is no such system available for operators to refer to when hiring drivers,' Transport Minister Anthony Loke told reporters at a joint press conference with Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi after a weekly post-Cabinet meeting.
'The Cabinet has instructed the Transport Ministry to put further emphasis on the issues of enforcement. The ministry will give its utmost cooperation to execute this instruction,' he added.
Loke said this is one of several steps taken by his ministry following the fatal bus crash which killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students and injured 33 others on the East-West Highway in Gerik, Perak, on Monday.
Loke also revealed that his ministry has revoked the vehicle permit of the bus operator involved in the tragedy.
He said the decision was made based on early investigations, which found the Kedah-based company had loaned the bus to a different individual in Kelantan at a cost of RM500 per month.
He said this was against the vehicle permit regulations.
The bus owner also failed to provide a GPS data report to the authorities because the device was not active, he added.
'These two requirements were clearly not met by the operator.
'Therefore, all vehicle permits owned by the operator will be revoked and any appeal made will not be accepted,' Loke said.
Meanwhile, Nanta said the Works Ministry had allocated funds for upgrade works at the East-West Highway since 2023.
He said the road was built in 1967 and requires upgrading.
Nanta said he had approved RM30mil for the upgrade and maintenance in several critical sections of the highway in 2023, including improvements to the pavement and street lights.
In addition, a total of RM7.2mil was allocated for repairs at other road sections of the highway last year.
'This year, RM55mil was allocated to repair accident-prone areas on the highway,' Nanta added.
Fahmi also announced that the Cabinet had agreed to provide an additional RM10,000 for the families of victims who perished in the crash and RM5,000 for those who sustained injuries.
He also said that the National Higher Education Fund Corporation loans of the victims who passed away would be waived.

Bus brakes being checked

GERIK: Vehicle inspection agency Puspakpom has conducted a check on the brake system of the bus involved in a tragic accident on the East-West Highway near here. The report on the check is expected to be ready by tomorrow, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke (pic). Loke also warned the bus driver over his claim that the brake system malfunctioned prior to the incident. 'I am not sure if the claim was made to protect himself. 'Whatever he is saying cannot be taken at face value,' he told a press conference after visiting the crash site and also checking on the bus at the Gerik district police headquarters yesterday. 'But I want to warn the driver to not simply say things that may not be true. 'The cause of the accident has not been determined. Whether it was due to the road conditions or caused by the bus driver, it will be investigated thoroughly.' Early on Monday, the bus flipped on its side, killing 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students. Loke said the company operating the bus can also be hauled to court. 'It is clear that the bus owner leased the vehicle to another person, which is an offence,' he said. Loke also reminded all public transport operators to do their own Inspection and Safety Audit (Jisa) before the Road Transport Department (JPJ) comes knocking. 'All public transport operators need to buck up. 'Comply and do the audit before JPJ conducts checks,' he said, adding that Jisa, which is different from the mandatory six-month vehicle inspection, is to enhance the safety aspects of a vehicle. 'It (Jisa) is not something new but compliance is weak,' the minister said. He also said a large-scale audit will be held to check compliance among bus and lorry operators. 'It is not a reaction to the accident. Even before, the audit had been conducted periodically.'

Google sues LATAM Airlines in US over Brazilian YouTube video dispute

FILE PHOTO: A LATAM Airlines plane is seen at Santiago International Airport, Chile March 30, 2017. REUTERS/Ivan Alvarado/File Photo (Reuters) -Alphabet's Google sued Chile-based LATAM Airlines in U.S. federal court in San Jose, California on Thursday, seeking a declaration that Brazilian courts cannot force the tech giant to take down a YouTube video in the United States that accused a LATAM employee of sexually abusing a child. Google in the lawsuit said that LATAM was attempting to "make an end-run" around protections for free speech under the U.S. Constitution by suing in Brazil to force the video's removal worldwide. Spokespeople for LATAM did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Google's allegations. Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda said in a statement that the company has "long supported the legal principle that courts in a country have jurisdiction over content available in that country, but not over what content should be available in other countries." Right-wing social media companies Trump Media and Rumble filed a similar lawsuit in Florida in February against a Brazilian judge who had ordered them to remove the U.S.-based accounts of a leading supporter of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. A federal judge decided in the case that the companies were not required to comply with the order in the United States. According to Google's lawsuit, U.S. citizen and Florida resident Raymond Moreira posted two YouTube videos in 2018 of his 6-year-old son outlining allegations of sexual abuse that the child said he experienced from a LATAM employee while traveling as an unaccompanied minor. Moreira sued LATAM in Florida in 2020 over the alleged abuse, which led to a confidential settlement. LATAM sued Google in Brazil in 2018 seeking an order to remove the video from YouTube, which Google owns. Brazil's highest court is set to consider next week whether it has the authority to order Google to take down the video worldwide. Google asked the court in California on Thursday to declare that LATAM cannot force the tech giant to remove the video in the United States. Canada's Supreme Court upheld an order for Google to remove some search results worldwide in a separate case in 2018. A California judge halted that order's U.S. enforcement in 2017. US says airstrike killed Islamic State official in Syria

WASHINGTON: The US military announced Thursday that a recent airstrike had killed an Islamic State group official in northwest Syria. In a post to social media, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces 'conducted a precision airstrike in northwest Syria killing Rakhim Boev, a Syria-based ISIS official,' using another name for IS. The post on X said Boev was 'involved in planning external operations threatening U.S. citizens, our partners, and civilians.' The accompanying image depicts an SUV vehicle with a bashed-in windshield and roof. AFP previously reported that two people were killed in separate drone strikes Tuesday, on a car and a motorcycle, in the northwestern bastion of the Islamist former rebels who now head the Syrian government. A call to CENTCOM seeking confirmation that the incidents are related was not immediately returned. The twin drone strikes in the Idlib region mirror the US-led coalition's past strikes on jihadists in the area. During a meeting in Riyadh last month, US President Donald Trump called on his Syrian counterpart Ahmed al-Sharaa to help Washington prevent a resurgence by IS.
