Melaka set to launch second phase of Sungai Melaka river cruise
MELAKA: The eagerly awaited river cruise service along the second phase of Sungai Melaka, covering eight kilometres, is expected to commence soon, announced Shaharul Azuar Idris, Chief Executive Officer of the Melaka River and Beach Development Corporation (PPSPM).
Shaharul stated that the management of the second phase is scheduled to be officially handed over to PPSPM by June.
"We are waiting for the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) for the handover process. However, PPSPM has requested early permission from DID to begin operating the river cruise service before the formal handover," he said during PPSPM's Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration at Dataran Pengkalan Rama on Thursday night (April 24).
He highlighted that the second phase of the river cruise will offer a unique experience compared to the first phase.
"This new segment will introduce a more recreational and leisurely tourism package, contributing to the expansion of tourism activities along Sungai Melaka," Shaharul said.
The second phase connects the Taman Rempah jetty to the Batu Hampar waterway, opening up new opportunities for visitor engagement and exploration.
In a separate announcement, Shaharul revealed a series of events to celebrate World Tourism Day 2025 (WTD2025), beginning in June.
Among the key highlights is the Sungai Melaka Festival, scheduled from June 20 to June 29, which promises nine days of vibrant programmes and activities.
"During the festival, we'll also host the International Dragon Boat Festival from June 20 to June 22, as well as the Longest Traditional Food Cooking Competition, which will be recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR).
"These initiatives underscore PPSPM's ongoing efforts to elevate Melaka's tourism appeal and offer enriched experiences to both local and international visitors," he added.

He mentioned that the project was originally scheduled for completion in May, but it encountered a minor delay due to the rainy weather earlier this year. Chieng revealed that he raised the funding for Phase 2 during the recent State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting. 'As we are set to complete hase 1 of the project in August, we require phase 2 to bring the project to fruition. The design, proposal, and working paper originate from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sibu and have received approval from DID Sarawak. 'During the (recent) DUN sitting session, I brought up this topic, and Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian responded, stating that for the second phase of this project, the DID is putting up the submission under the Sarawak government (for) RMK13 (13th Malaysia Plan), Rolling Plan 1 in 2026, with the project costing RM56.6 million,' he said. Chieng made the remarks to reporters during a sacrificial meat distribution programme at Masjid Al-Muhajirin Sentosa, attended by SUPP Bukit Assek chairman Datuk Chieng Buong Toon and mosque chairman Ramli Hussin. He also announced a second project request for upgrading the drainage system and associated works in the Jerrwit and Ek Dee areas, including Kampung Saujana. 'With the project cost of RM41.75 million, it will be put out under RMK13, rolling plan 2. Every Government Decision Based On Thorough Research, Consideration
KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 (Bernama) -- Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu emphasised that all government decisions, including the cessation of price controls and chicken subsidies as well as the retargeting of egg subsidies, were made based on thorough research and consideration for the long-term interests of the people. He said that although not all policies have an immediate impact, with a clear direction and consistent implementation, the results will be reaped together. Taking the example of the retargeting of egg subsidies, he acknowledged that it was a difficult but necessary decision, and the step was taken after observing stable production costs and guaranteed supply, as during the recent Hari Raya Aidilfitri. "Since 2022, the government has spent RM2.5 billion on egg subsidies, a large figure that is unsustainable if continued. "Another thing, subsidies have also been enjoyed by the wealthy and foreigners. It's unfair. So we redirect to projects that truly help the people in line with MADANI values,' he said in a Facebook post today. From May 1, the egg subsidy was reduced from 10 sen to five sen per egg and will be fully removed on Aug 1. Commenting on the decision to end price controls and chicken subsidies starting Nov 1, 2023, Mohamad said the decision was made so that the savings obtained could be channelled back into the livestock sector in a more organised manner. "We want the old chicken coops to be reopened, the farming system to be upgraded, and small farmers to be given financing facilities. The goal is to increase the country's chicken production and ensure food security for the people," he said. The matter was shared by the Kota Raja member of parliament during a visit to the Nanyang Siang Pau office this afternoon.

In that meeting, Mohamad expressed appreciation to the media practitioners who have long been the conveyors of information, educators of society, and guardians of the boundary of truth. He said that media practitioners have a significant role in building a positive narrative, fostering a spirit of unity, and helping to shape a mature and responsible society. 'Bang Mat wants to see all the nation's children, whether Malay, Chinese, Indian, Iban or Kadazan, and everyone else, continue to progress and prosper in a harmonious media must also play an important role in realising this dream of making Malaysia a peaceful, prosperous country with united citizens,' he added.
