
‘Denmark is showing the world what is possible': how the North Sea became the ‘green power plant of Europe'
Blustery, relatively shallow, and a stone's throw from northern Europe, the North Sea's natural energy will supply clean, affordable power long into the future. And this abundance of renewable energy sources is inspiring innovators to create new green technologies that could revolutionise notoriously dirty industries and create a wealth of new opportunities.
At the moment, more than 80% of Europe's offshore wind capacity connected to the grid is in the North Sea – more than 25 gigawatts of clean energy generation. Now the North Sea nations plan to ramp up renewable activity even more. In 2024, the governments of Belgium, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands, joined by France, Norway, Luxembourg and the UK, increased their offshore wind targets from 30GW to 120GW by 2030, and to 300GW by 2050. This equates to more than 50% of the renewable generation needed to deliver a climate-neutral EU.
As the region develops to help meet renewable ambitions, this could accelerate growth and demand for skills in related sectors, such as subsea cabling and offshore platforms. Plus, generating clean energy is only part of the equation – storing it and transporting it are two key factors. Supportive technologies are needed to do both effectively. So how can we make best use of this wealth of energy from the 'green power plant' of Europe?
In Denmark, the first hydrogen molecules have already been produced to power what will become the largest factory in the world to generate e-methanol, for use in the shipping industry. This is Kassø, in southern Denmark, where engineer and project manager Holger Riess at Siemens Energy has been busy managing the build of a 50 megawatt (MW) electrolyser plant – powered by renewables.
'Of course it's important for the climate but there's also a strong business case for the shipping industry,' says Riess. When the electrolyser is up and running, it will split water into its molecular parts, creating an annual 6,000 tonnes of carbon-free hydrogen – which will then be synthesised with carbon dioxide to produce e-methanol. Every year, the plant will generate 42,000 tonnes of e-methanol for use by the maritime and shipping industry. An alternative to fossil fuel, e-methanol will power container ships transporting goods by sea, more cleanly.
Today, shipping is responsible for 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, or some 1,000 million tonnes (Mt) of CO2 a year, and the sector is under orders to clean up. E-methanol is emerging as a solution for large cargo ships that are too big to electrify. 'Shipping emits the equivalent [CO2 emissions] of a large country,' says Riess. 'E-methanol can save a tremendous amount of emissions.' Most fuel made at the Kassø plant will be used by Danish shipping group Maersk. A 2,000-container ship – relatively small – running on e-methanol in the Baltic is already saving 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide a day, says Riess. Larger ships carry some 16,000 containers and the potential savings are huge, according to Riess, with around 55,000 ships currently running on fossil fuels. 'Sending goods via carbon neutral shipping will also help other industries to meet their climate targets.'
Once a chemical engineer in oil and gas, Riess is happy to have switched over to renewables. More than 90% of oil and gas workers have skills that could transfer to wind, carbon capture and clean hydrogen energy production, according to the lobby group Offshore Energy UK.
'I have two daughters, and I'm happy that I can do my part to leave them a cleaner planet,' says Riess. After nearly three years, he's witnessed the project develop from an empty space into a facility poised to crank into action and he's played a leading role. 'If you had asked me where I would be working at this point in my career, I would never have guessed,' says Riess. 'What we've been able to realise here is a significant step forward for the industry. I'm so proud to be part of it.'
Connecting the vast resources of offshore wind to national grids requires powerful infrastructure to balance and regulate supply and demand, and over the next few years, generation will soar as new facilities come on stream. Some 13.5 miles (22km) off the Danish west coast, Denmark's largest offshore wind power plant will become operational in 2026 – this is the 1,000MW Thor, capable of supplying more than 1m households with green electricity.
In Copenhagen, electrical engineer Josephine Krumhoff is part of a Siemens Energy team coordinating a number of transformers and shunt reactors that make up the onshore substation that will ultimately help integrate Thor's clean energy to Denmark's grid. During a busy few months, the first units have been manufactured and gone through factory testing. 'It's been a steep learning curve,' says Krumhoff. 'Thor is one of the biggest projects in Denmark, so to see the work that goes into it and how it comes to fruition is eye opening.'
Krumhoff began working on the substation units as a postgraduate student before joining Siemens Energy full-time in spring 2024. 'I really love my job,' says Krumhoff. 'And with a project like this, you can't wait to get to work. It's inspiring to work on something that will have such a lasting positive impact,' she says.
Across the sea in Hull, manufacturing apprentice Dane Glenn has grown used to the size of the 70-tonne offshore turbine blades made at the Siemens Gamesa site where he's worked for the past 14 months. Before applying for an apprenticeship, Glenn worked at a local supermarket. Now, working alongside other apprentices and with the support of a mentor, he's swapped stacking shelves for building turbine blades. Some 2,500 blades have already been made at the factory, which is the UK's leading offshore wind blade manufacturer. These are destined for offshore windfarms – 180 of these 108-metre blades were built and shipped to the 882MW Moray West windfarm off the coast of Scotland, which will supply energy for up to 1.33m homes when it comes online later this year.
In the coming months, Glenn will start working on even larger blades, reaching 115 metres, for delivery to ScottishPower for use in more North Sea offshore wind. He has just returned from a trip to Denmark to share work insights with colleagues. 'We've taken a lot back that we can use as we begin to transition [to producing larger blades].' With a maths, science and engineering background in school, Glenn is aiming for a qualification to support his career in clean energy. 'My goal is to get a degree in engineering. It's something I've always wanted to do. It was just a question of finding the right opportunity.'
For the clean energy revolution, energy hubs such as the North Sea will play a leading role in powering nations and demonstrating what is possible. And with more projects comes increased demand for more people to join the sector to support further development of Europe's green power plant. As Krumhoff says: 'With more and more energy projects emerging, it's the natural way forward.'

Bulgaria shows even citizens of small nations reject the euro
Bulgaria is slated to be the newest member of the Eurozone. The European Commission and European Central Bank (ECB) released statements today that effectively confirmed Bulgaria's adoption of the euro on January 1 2026. Bulgaria's entry extends the currency bloc from 20 to 21 members and builds on the nation's 2007 decision to abandon the lev as its official currency; the year it joined the EU. Bulgaria's adoption of the euro reflects its ability to overcome problematic economic indicators. Bulgaria was initially expected to become a Eurozone member in 2024, but its 9.5 per cent inflation rate scuppered these aspirations. Bulgaria's harmonisation with ECB policies is expected to lower its inflation rate to 1.8 per cent by 2026 and ensure its alignment with the EU's price stability criteria. Bulgaria's debt-to-GDP ratio has declined since 1998 and stands at just 24.1 per cent. While Bulgaria's ability to transcend demographic decline and political dysfunction to meet the EU's criteria appears inspiring, there is a darker side to the story. Bulgaria's adoption of the euro overrules public opinion and underscores the sovereignty concerns that the EU's smaller member states have about the bloc's supranational authority. Despite projections of a 5.8 per cent increase in Bulgaria's exports after it joins the euro, opposition to the common currency is fierce. A recent Eurobarometer survey revealed that 50 per cent of Bulgarians reject the euro and only 43 per cent are in favour of it. Bulgarian pensioners fear that pricing goods in euros will erode their life savings and their younger counterparts share their concerns about a loss of independence. Incoming Polish president Karol Nawrocki's sovereignty-based opposition to swapping the zloty for the euro resonates strongly in Bulgaria. The disconnect between elite decision-making and public opinion on the euro has threatened political cohesion by galvanising pro-Russian populist movements. Varazhdane Party leader Kostadin Kostadinov, who recently signed a cooperation agreement with president Vladimir Putin's United Russia Party, has capitalised on anti-euro sentiments and rallied thousands of like-minded Bulgarians on the streets of Sofia. As Bulgaria has had seven parliamentary elections since 2021 and lacks the ability to form a durably stable government, this dispute has serious destabilising potential. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the potential for anti-vaccination disinformation to spread widely in Bulgaria and the euro's adoption over the public's will could further erode trust. While EU officials celebrate Bulgaria's milestone acceptance of a common currency, the mood in Sofia is much more sombre and apprehensive. This is yet another reminder of the growing discontent between Brussels and the European street.

Seven EU countries to back pan-European savings product label
PARIS, June 4 (Reuters) - Estonia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Luxembourg and Spain on Thursday will launch a new marketing label for savings products that target European investments, France's finance ministry said. The move is intended to be a first limited step towards better integrating the European Union's financial markets, which tend to be fragmented along national lines. The seven countries have agreed that the European savings product label will require at least 70% of assets to be invested in EU countries, with a focus on equity investments to help shore up firms' balance sheets, according to a statement from the French finance ministry. Products must encourage long-term holding with a minimum five-year investment and offer no public capital guarantees. Any tax incentives will be determined individually by each EU member state. Competent authorities in each country will be responsible for ensuring that the banks, insurers and asset management firms that use the label meet its criteria. The right to use it will be withdrawn in the event of misuse. A more ambitious capital markets union has eluded the EU for years in the face of entrenched national interests, different business and financial cultures, and regulations in European countries. However, it is increasingly seen as essential to boost financing of European companies, which tend to be far more dependent on bank loans than their competitors in the United States, where deep financial markets make raising capital much easier.

US and Europe trade negotiators discuss tariffs in Paris
The European Union's top trade negotiator, Maros Sefcovic, met on Wednesday with his American counterpart, US trade representative Jamieson Greer, on the sidelines of a meeting of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. 'We're advancing in the right direction at pace,' Mr Sefcovic said at a news conference. He said ongoing technical meetings between EU and US negotiators in Washington would be soon followed by a video conference between himself and Mr Greer to then 'assess the progress and charter the way forward'. Brussels and Washington are unlikely to reach a substantive trade agreement in Paris. The issues dividing them are too difficult to resolve quickly. US President Donald Trump regularly criticises America's persistent trade deficit with the European Union, which was a record 161 billion dollars (£119 billion)last year, according to the US Commerce Department. Mr Trump blames the gap between what the US sells and what it buys from Europe on unfair trade practices and often singles out for criticism the EU's 10% tax on imported cars. America's was 2.5% until Mr Trump raised it to 25% in April. The EU has argued its purchases of US services, especially in the technology sector, all but overcome the deficit. After the Trump administration's surprise tariffs last week on steel rattled global markets and complicated the ongoing, wider tariff negotiations between Brussels and Washington, the EU on Monday said it is preparing 'countermeasures' against the US. The EU has offered the US a 'zero for zero' deal in which both sides end tariffs on industrial goods, including cars. Mr Trump has rejected that idea, but EU officials say it is still on the table. The EU could buy more liquefied natural gas and defence items from the US, and lower duties on cars, but it is not likely to budge on calls to scrap the value added tax, which is akin to a sales tax, or open up the EU to American beef. 'We still have a few weeks to have this discussion and negotiation,' French trade minister Laurent Saint-Martin said in Paris on Wednesday ahead of the OECD meeting. 'If the discussion and negotiation do not succeed, Europe is capable of having countermeasures on American products and services as well.' Greta Peisch, who was general counsel for the US trade representative in the Biden administration, said the zero-for-zero proposal could provide a way to make progress if the Trump administration 'is looking for a reason not to impose tariffs on the EU'. But Ms Peisch, now a partner at the Wiley Rein law firm, added: 'How motivated is the US to come to a deal with the EU?' Mr Trump, after all, has longstanding grievances and complaints about EU trade practices. One target of his ire is the value-added tax. Mr Trump and his advisers consider VATs unfair protectionism because they are levied on US products. But VATs are set at a national level, not by the EU, and apply to domestic and imported products alike, so they have not traditionally been considered a trade barrier. There is little chance governments will overhaul their tax systems to appease Mr Trump. Likewise, the Europeans are likely to balk at US demands to scrap food and safety regulations that Washington views as trade barriers. These include bans on hormone-raised beef, chlorinated chicken and genetically modified foods. 'When you start talking about chickens or GMOs or automobile safety standards, you're talking about the ways countries choose to regulate their economies,' Ms Peisch said. 'We think that's protectionist. They think it's keeping their citizens healthy … It's been a sore point for 60 years.'
